Largely to Wednesday's disappointment, the summer break she had so long wished for passed as soon as it came around. While she hated the hot weather and vibrant colours, she loved the fact it meant a chance to get away from Nevermore Academy. She made the most of her free time- well, as much time as she could spend by herself because somehow, Wednesday managed to secure herself a boyfriend- even she was perplexed as to how she achieved such a feat.
It had been a sweltering summer afternoon when Wednesday had made the decision to escape the confines of her family home to visit the old bookshop she used to go to- Mr Wise's Book Emporium. It was a bookstore that she couldn't quite understand how was still running- as far as she was aware, she was the only customer the old man running the store ever got. And even then, it wasn't like she shopped there regularly- especially in the last year thanks to her being stranded in Jericho.
But that day, things were different. The once slanted and peeling wood exterior of the two storey building had gained a fresh lick of green paint with the accents being painted in an off yellow. The half broken blinds had been taken down and the cracked glass had seemingly been replaced. The rusted hinges of the door no longer screamed as she pushed it open and the sound was instead replaced a pristine bell hanging from the doorframe. Even the handle on the outside of the door appeared to have been given a thorough polishing as she could see her pale reflection in it. Upon entering, she found the ancient literature and texts were no longer messily piled- but instead we're neatly placed into bookshelves and there was no sign of the store owner at the counter. She felt a pang of anger run through her dead chest. She wasn't fond of change.
A small thud could be heard above her as well as a hushed curse. The old rickety staircase still creaked as a spry young man around her age hopped down, his hands covered in black and blue paints- something that peaked Wednesday's curiosity. "S-Sorry-" the boy apologiesed with a warm smile. "I don't usually get customers." He explained- presumably as to why his hands were covered in paint and why he wasn't behind the counter to greet Wednesday.
Wednesday tilted her head as she narrowed her eyes on the boy. "You?" She asked confused, she was unsure as to where the old man had gone. Perhaps he had sold his store since Wednesday- his sole customer hadn't shown her face in so many months. "Where is Mr Wise?"
The boy's face grew sad as did his smile. "Mr Wise was my grandad." He answered softly.
Wednesday raised a brow. "Was?"
He paused for a moment. "He passed away a couple of months ago." He answered again.
Wednesday let her head slowly drop at the unexpected news. Even the carpet beneath her feet had been changed. "I am... Sorry for your loss." She uttered. She almost felt guilty. She didn't have favourite people but if she did, Mr Wise would have been right up there. He was warm and charismatic and Wednesday found him comfortable to be around.
He shook his head softly. "Don't be. Death comes for all of us- sooner or later." He told her, slipping his hand into her hold one- it was enough to make him shiver. She didn't pull her hand away, nor did she flinch at his touch, in fact she found it rather enlightening. He gave a small squeeze. "So, do you know what you're looking for?" He asked, letting her hand go.
Wednesday lifted her head so that she could take his face in. He did look fairly similar to the old man. It was warming to know that the store was still in good hands- but she was still angry about how bright it looked now. She nodded.
She told the boy exactly what she wanted and he found it in no more than two minutes, despite the crowded bookshelves. When he charged her the due amount, he noted something on the inner cover of the hardback book, something she didn't bother paying attention to until she got back home. His number. "How careless." She told herself, ashamed that the book's pristine condition had been ruined. "I like it."
Things between Wednesday and Y/N progressed quicky- well, as quickly as a love dead girl could handle- but still, their relationship was comfortable. It was quite fitting that Wednesday would bond with someone over something so macabre. Things had gone so well, that she had even invited him over to Nevermore.
Y/N got out of the taxi at the long driveway to the Academy and made it to the big, intimidating gates with a heavy backpack over his shoulder. He found Wednesday waiting for him beside the gates. "Sorry I'm late, the taxi driver was reluctant of driving down this way." He explained.
She gave a brief nod before reaching up to plant a small peck on his cheek. She guided him through curious and untrusting stares of the other students, all the way up to her room. She pushed the door open to find Enid and Yoko sat there together, Enid seemed to be painting Yoko's nails.
Upon entry, Enid let out a little screech, causing Y/N to flinch a little. "Wednesday- behind you!" She shouted.
Unwavering, Wednesday raised a brow. "Enid, Yoko- this is Y/N." She introduced them, moving aside from the doorway so that Y/N could step into the room properly. "He and I are..." She trailed off.
"Dating." He finished for her, smiling a small bit.
"No. No way." Enid spoke shaking her head. "Did she hold a knife up to your throat or something-"
"Yeah, you're a real steal." Yoko chimed in with a grin.
"Hands- and fangs off. He's not yours to play with." She scolded the two of them.
Y/N's eyes grew wide as he laughed a little. "To play with?" He asked, setting his backpack down beside the end of her bed.
"Yes." Wednesday deadpanned as she kicked off the boots on her feet.
Yoko grinned. "Careful you don't get this one killed, Wednesday. It would be a real shame." She teased. Enid giggled.
Wednesday rolled her eyes as Y/N's jaw grew slack. "You killed your last boyfriend?" He questioned in disbelief.
"Almost." She answered with a grin. "Is that a problem?" She asked, coking her head to observe how he would react.
A mischievous grin grew into his lips. "Not at all. It just adds to the danger of being around you. I like it." He told her. His eyes moved to the two other girls as his attention was caught by the nail paints.
"Oo- Oo, do me." He demanded as he knelt down beside Enid's bed. Wednesday gritted her teeth at his childish display while Enid giggled and moved the brush of the polish to his outstretched hand- but before she could lay any more than a single stroke on his nails, Wednesday had pulled him away by the back of his t-shirt, forcing him to his feet. He looked down at the streak of pink nail varnish on his index finger's nail.
"Mine." She snapped. The scene looked quite odd, considering the vast height difference between the two but it was amusing to view none the less as Yoko struggled to keep her laughter in. Seeing her near outburst of laughter, Wednesday sent a hiss-like sound in her direction before latching onto his arm, directing him to her bed. "You must be tired from the journey, we can lie down if you want?"
He replied with a small nod, pulling off the shoes from his feet and placing them beside Wednesday's before sitting on her bed- bouncing a small bit as he tested how soft it was.
Wednesday wouldn't admit it but Y/N trully held her small, black heart in his hands- though unfortunately not literally. She would follow his every whim as he would hers. They shared earphones as they introduced eachother into their favourite songs. She would read him her favourite books and she even volunteered herself to help out around the bookstore so she could be around him more.
He lay back on her bed as he observed her room. He could quite clearly see the divide between the two halves which brought a grin to his lips.
Enid and Yoko chattered away. "Maybe we got it the wrong way around- maybe Y/N has cursed Wednesday into being with him- There's no way she could be this clingy about a boy-" Enid suggested, resuming painting Yoko's nails.
The later chimed in. "Yeah, maybe he just has a thing for small goth girls with major violent tendencies?" She joked. The two looked at one another before they each burst out laughing.
Wednesday let out a frustrated scoff before laying beside Y/N, fitting into his side like the missing piece from a jigsaw puzzle. She curled up and he turned to his side to place an arm over her. He placed a small kiss on the tip of her nose, causing her to scrunch it up a little. He grinned. "You're adorable..." He murmured.
Yoko and Enid overheard as they gawked and awed at his comment- making a fuss over the two of them. Wednesday found that her cheeks grew prickly with heat. "Shut up or I will make a noose out of your intestines and hang you with it"
