Our first date

Got rained out.

Do you remember?

It was a picnic.

Well, it was supposed to be a picnic.

You had always told me

That you thought a first date of

Watching the autumn sunset

Would be breathtaking.

It was spring, not fall, and

I didn't want to wait

That long

To take you out, not when

You were finally mine.

So I tried to

Make our first date

As close to your dream

As possible.

I tried to plan it for the evening

But

You had classes in the evening,

And

Every day you didn't have classes

I would be stuck at work

When the sun decided to set.

So we planned to watch the sun

Rise instead.

I packed all your favorite food

And we left for a little flowery garden

In the park

At five in the morning.

When we arrived,

The sun was beginning to wake up

Providing just enough light

To start setting up the picnic.

As the sun rose,

We talked and laughed and

Filled up on little strawberry candies

And some mint gum.

But then we realized that

It wasn't just fog we were seeing.

It was clouds

Heavy with rain

And I remember wondering

How we were able to see the sun

Completely

Rise

Before the clouds covered the sun

And washed the earth clean.

It was as if they had known

We were there and

We needed to see the sunrise.

And they had waited

Just for us

To be ready.

After that we stayed out in the rain

For a while

And played around like children

Avoiding their bedtime.

And while we danced I thought,

"I want to be both

Your sunrise that gives you hope

And

Your clouds that wash the pain away,

Forever

And always."
