HALEY
I wake up in a cold sweat. My visions have been growing more vivid in my sleep.
People Iâve never met, yet who seem so familiar, play significant roles. Last night, I saw Alpha Redd. I knew it was him because I could feel his power.
Iâve always been a seerâthatâs what I call myself. I close my eyes and essentially rewind my vision to see how Glory and I encountered Alpha Redd. It all starts with an old truck and a familiar scent.
I open my eyes and glance at my still sleeping sister. Looking up into the night sky, Iâm reminded of the vision from yesterdayâs meditation. I look to where that Starlight Sister should be, but sheâs not there.
Perhaps she stayed on Earth once she arrived. I stretch my legs and crack my back. This situation is terrible.
Itâs been almost five years since we arrived at this camp. Martha found us wandering around and brought us here. She saved us.
She saved many of us. She always told us that if we had the chance for a better life, we should seize it. Some girls find their mates and move on, but some remain stuck here.
I donât want to be stuck here, especially not after a vision I had a few days ago. The camp was attacked by a large group of men. Although Glory and I werenât in the vision, it still scared the shit out of me.
Many of the she-wolves were ravaged, and some of the pups were killed. Goddess, I hope itâs one vision that doesnât come to pass. Thankfully, they donât always if someone makes a different choice.
I walk through the sleeping camp and find a sniffling Anna. I sit beside her and hold her hand. âVirgil never made it back.â
âI know. You still feel him, right?â Anna nods, not one to speak very much. âHeâll be here in a few days. He wouldnât leave you guys behind.â
My vision goes foggy, and I see Virgil freaking out in front of Alpha Redd. Another powerful man, connected to a black-haired woman, picks up Annaâs tiny wolf and carries her away. I blink back to the present.
Annaâs wispy light hair blows in the breeze, and she curls into her knees. Little D begins to stir, so Anna lays back down beside him. I pet her thin, smooth hair.
âIf youâre that worried, go look for him.â Anna gives me a solemn nod. I tuck her in and walk back through the camp.
I look over all of the familiar faces, and I begin to miss them, even though Iâm standing among them. I let out a breath, and I know things are definitely happening.
Why is Alpha Redd in so many of my visions? I lay on my little mat and take a few deep, slow breaths. My mind begins to clear, and I focus on Alpha Redd.
Images of his life begin to flash in my eyes. He jumps off a rope swing as a young pup. He wrestles around with his beta in high school. He teases a girl with copper-colored hair with a tray of cookies.
The girl with copper hair slaps him in front of a large crowd. Alpha Redd pukes and rolls onto his back in pain. The copper-haired girl kisses him over a banister. Alpha Redd breaks an older manâs neck.
I gasp and open my eyes. I tangle my fingers into the front of my hair and look up to the sky. The Moon Goddess smiles down on me as I try to make sense of the visions.
I feel like Alpha Redd is good, but that last vision was so off-putting. There must be a reason. I wonder if that incident leads to something important?
Damn, why did I have to open my eyes too early. Thereâs got to be more. I close my eyes and try again.
âHaley? Haley.â I open my eyes to the early morning and my sister shaking me awake. âHaley, come on. I have to pee.â
I grunt but kick off my blanket. She can never pee alone. Iâve always looked out for herâsheâs my other half.
Iâm four minutes older than her, and weâre identical, which is extremely rare for werewolves. There are a few twins, but itâs usually a fraternal pairing consisting of one male and one female.
The red berries catch the light, and Iâm reminded of my visions. Crap, I didnât see anything else about Alpha Redd. Iâm going to have to try again later.
It was actually kind of cool honing in on one person like that. I wonder if I could do it again if I focus enough. After we relieve ourselves, Glory and I search for rabbits in our nearly identical wolves.
The only difference between our peppered gray and white wolves is the mark on my forehead. The hair is white, but thereâs a small crescent-shaped patch of an even brighter white. Itâs easy to miss if youâre not looking for it.
Glory finds a rabbit and chases it. My sister is the sweetest person I know, but sheâs so clumsy. She doesnât see a root jutting out of the ground and trips, allowing the rabbit to escape.
She dusts herself off and hangs her head. âI almost had that one.â Snickering from the direction of the camp catches our attention.
I turn with a growl, and Abel and Tyler continue laughing. Glory sniffs, and my rage sets in. âYou two assholes, fuck off. Better yet, you go catch breakfast.â
I take Gloryâs hand. âCome on, Glory. You did great. You really did almost have that one.â
Glory is too upset to go back empty-handed, so we take a walk instead. âEveryone thinks weâre trouble. Even Martha says so. I just know Jason hates me.â
âWho cares what they think. They donât know us. No one does. Thatâs why we need to find Uncle Ryan.â
âWhy canât we find him? His pack is known.â
âBecause people donât want to talk to rogue pups, and the women in the camp think weâre trouble, like you said. But it doesnât matter, weâll find him, I know it.â
Weâre not far from a shop in no-manâs-land when an old truck pulls up to the convenience store. I gasp as I recognize it from my vision. I pull Glory with me to take a closer look.
Alpha Roberts comes out of the store with a bottle of pop. He stops when he recognizes our scent. I step in front of my sister and stare him down.
âWell, if it isnât the twin terrors. How have you two been?â He crosses his arms and leans against his truck.
âLike you donât know. Weâre rogues because you turned us out.â
âHaley!â Glory whispers a warning at me, but Iâm not having it. We had a home and family.
Alpha Roberts stands tall, exuding his alpha power. Unfortunately for him, it doesnât affect me.
Glory whimpers and lowers her head, so I follow suit.
âYou know, I would be willing to bring you back, but you would have to prove your worth first.â
I know this is the path that leads to Alpha Redd somehow, but I canât appear too eager. This guy is an asshole and I donât trust a word he says.
âProve our worth how?â I cross my arms and look up at him.
His beady brown eyes give me the creeps, and I realize heâs the one I saw Alpha Redd kill. The corner of my lip slightly turns up. If anyone deserves it, it would be this piece of shit.
âJust be a distraction for one of my friends. His mate is in the Redd Pack, but that alpha wonât let him see her. You provide a distraction while he sneaks in to see his mate. Nothing big.â Fucking liar.
~Haley, I donât trust him.~
~I donât either, but this asshole will get us to the Redd Pack. Glory, we have to go so we can find Uncle Ryan. Iâll see if heâll tell us.~
âAlpha Roberts, do you know where the Weston pack is?â
He gives me a patronizing grin. âOf course I do.â He opens his soda and takes a long drink.
I hear Glory lick her lips; itâs been a long time since weâve had soda. I squeeze her hand, letting her know I feel the same.
âWeâll help you if you help us. Tell us where the Weston pack is.â
âIn exchange for your help. Iâm not stupid enough to tell you now so you can run off and leave me hanging.â
âAnd Iâm not stupid enough to believe your bullshit story about some friendâs mate.â
Alpha Roberts gives me a cynical chuckle. âYouâre not as gullible as Iâd hoped, but I still need a distraction for my guy and you still need directions.â He holds his hand out, waiting for me to make a move.
I tentatively place my hand in his. He nods his head with that stupid grin and I snatch the soda from his other hand. He chuckles.
âFeisty, just like I remember, Haley. Share with your sister.â Like I wouldnât, moron.
He tilts his head toward the truck. âHop in.â He opens the driverâs door and I push Glory in first, keeping myself between them.
~Haley~
~Trust me.~ I donât even take a sip before handing her the soda.
Alpha Roberts drives us to the middle of nowhere. Glory squeezes my hand tighter when he stops the truck.
Alpha Roberts doesnât say anything as he gets out and waits for us to follow. I give Glory a nod and reach over her to open the door.
âAs long as we stick together, weâll be fine.â
Glory slides out, but I can feel her shaking. I hold her hand and pull her along with me.
Alpha Roberts leads us further into the woods where weâre met by a big guy eating from a picnic basket. âCastor, I brought your distractions.â
Castor looks up at us. He nods then holds up his basket.
âEat. You two are too skinny.â
I guide Glory to sit down and Alpha Roberts leaves. âFucker.â Castor spits after Alpha Roberts.
Castor offers his basket again. âThereâs barbecue chicken.â We each take a piece and dig in. He also has biscuits, mac ânâ cheese, roasted potatoes, and cobbler. I canât remember the last time weâve eaten so well.
âCastor, my sister and I both know Alpha Roberts is a liar. Why are you going against the Redd Pack?â I ask him, then lick sauce from my fingers.
âI have my reasons. Why are two pups getting involved in an act of suicide?â
âHe promised he would tell us where to find the Weston pack. Our uncle is there.â
âI donât know anything about other packs. You two stay back and donât engage. Alpha Redd is a decent guy. Met him once. He wonât kill two pups unless he has to.â
âYouâre a decent guy, Castor. Are you planning on suicide?â
âI was a decent guy. Now Iâm too much of a coward to swallow a bullet. My mate is gone and I want nothing else in life. If you two want to rest, weâll start walking come nightfall.â
Castor lays out with his hands behind his head and closes his eyes. Glory uses my leg as a pillow and I try to focus on tonightâs task.
âHaley. Iâm scared. I donât want to do this.â
I comb her hair over her ear. âI want to see Uncle Ryan. Weâll be fine, Glory. You heard Castor. Itâs the same thing Iâve been saying, Alpha Redd isnât going to kill us. Just stay back, let me do the work.â
