Chapter Twenty-Three
For the next three days, Iâm confined to bedrest; orders from the ever so present, pain in my ass, healer Gedric. Since I cannot heal with magic, and Malay is terrified to get anywhere near me, Gedric and Stanya are the only ones allowed near me. Stanya keeps me company with childhood games, while Gedric sees to my care. His doting is starting to get on my nerves. What hurts the most is when he makes me stand, and do frustrating exercises to regain motion in my legs. My legs are stiff, and my shoulder is worse. Stupid Ari. Stupid me. Stupid Fates.
âOw,â I snap at Gedric when he touches my kneecap. âQuit it.â
âYou need to move it Nat,â he tells me, keeping a smile on his face.
âYouâre lucky Iâm still recovering from this overload,â I mutter when he helps me to my feet.
âI bet I am,â he says as he accepts my weight; I had leaned into him so I can get off of my leg.
âSheâs not kidding,â Stanya chuckles. âThe only reason sheâs putting up with this abuse is because she canât access her powers.â
âI believe it,â he says, leading me towards the door. âHow about I take you to visit Halthin to make up for it?â
âHalthinâs awake?â Stanya demands while I check Gedricâs face to see if heâs serious.
âHe woke up an hour before I came in here. Malay asked that I keep you two out until she had sometime to check him over.â Gedric flinches when Stanya playfully punches his arm.
Stanya bounds out of the room while we trail right behind her. Normally I can walk fine, but with Gedricâs therapy Iâm more sore than if I had just walked on it. I forgot how humbling it is to physically heal.
When we walk into the room, Halthin is laying with cloth covering his skin. âYouâre more covered than I usually am.â I comment when we enter his room.
His eyes widen as he looks me over. âWhat happened to you?â
I wave him off, âSame old reason. How are you feeling?â I ask while Gedric sits me on the foot of his bed.
He looks me over. âNat, what happened to you? Youâre hurt, and thatâs not normal.â
I give him a measured look. âI fought Ari to allow the others to get you into safety, which sent me into overload. I recently went through another one, so I canât heal right now. Iâll be okay. Gedric is being an excellent healer. Now, Iâm not important here. How are you Halthin? Weâve been worried about you.â
âThatâs putting it mildly,â Stanya cuts in, interrupting his redirect. âWhat were you thinking? What happened in that village?â
âI-I-Iâ He stutters while looking at me. âIâm so sorry. I went in the store to get supplies and ran into someone. We started arguing and he threw me outside. I shielded my fall out of reflex. The man called out a spell and started attacking me. Then Ari showed up.â
Halthin flinches. âI didnât even last a minute before he had me pinned. He was trying to break through my memories, but my charm held up. Out of desperation I forced a window to break with my magic. He thought someone was coming to help me and let me go. I ran and collapsed after I found you.â
He looks at me. âI told you to run.â
I snort, âSince when do I listen to you?â
âIs that how you got hurt?â
I shake my head. âNo. I fought him off in the village. This is from an encounter with him when we were about to enter Ridgewilf to get you treated.â
âYouâre still an idiot for attacking him.â Stanya says, glaring at me. âYou were already near overload from pulling us up a mountain. Then you just had to try to kill him with Halthinâs blood magic.â
I roll my eyes; feeling extremely annoyed. âWeâve already been over this Stanya. I did what I could with what I had. Iâm not going to apologize for trying to protect you three.â
âWell Iâm still upset,â she snaps.
âClearly,â I say then take a deep breath. âNow, how are you doing?â I ask Halthin. âIâm not going to ask a fourth time.â
Halthin is just staring at me with horrified eyes. I cut him off-âWeâll talk about my intellect when youâre better. Now answer my question. Itâs important.â
âSore, but I can breathe. Iâm just a little cold, but I think itâs because of the weather.â
I touch his forehead, making the other two tense. âItâs from your fever. Itâs finally broken. Keep going,â I tell him when I grab his hand and roll up his sleeve. His skin is slightly pale, but still a very healthy colored compared to where he was at.
âI have a headache,â He answers, watching me.
âNormal,â I say, motioning him to continue.
âMy chest is itchyâ¦â He trails off, unsure what Iâm looking for.
Relief washes through me as I smile. âThatâs your magic readjusting in your body. Youâll be okay.â
Stanya touches my shoulder, âDoes that mean heâll be normal?â
I nod, âItâs a very good sign. It also means he can uncover himself. His body will start regulating itself once more.â
âThank you Healer Natasha,â Malay says while entering the room. âI came to the same conclusion.â
âWhen can I use my magic again?â Halthin asks, still looking at me for his answer.
I motion to Malay to take the lead. Malay nods, accepting my sign of respect. Sheâs the healer here, not me. Malay comes over and checks Halthinâs temperature and waves her magic over him, calming some of his ailments. âAlmost a month. When your chest stops itching, youâll be able to stretch your magic by practicing minor tasks. Youâre going to have to relearn the basics. Once theyâre down, youâll be able to resume using your magic as normal.â
He looks to Malay. âThank you for healing me, Healer Malay.â
âYouâre fortunate that Ari infected you so close to me. Not many would have been able to treat you when you reached me.â She looks at me, âNow, young lady, how are we feeling today?â
âSore, but Iâm feeling better. Mostly just injured.â I answer honestly. âCare to check me?â
She hesitates. âUhâ¦â
âOh just get over it and touch me. You know you want to.â I say to her, mostly annoyed about how gun shy sheâs been about being anywhere near me. âJust donât use your magic and Iâll be fine.â
âWhat did I miss?â Halthin asks, watching Malayâs hand tremble as she reaches for me. I gently lift my long shirt to expose my waist. I slightly turn so she can check my wound near my kidney.
âMalay was the one that sent Natasha into another overload when we got here.â Stanya answers, getting ready to jump into action if needed.
âWhat?â He asks while Malay lightly touches me.
âTo put it simply, the Fates are trying to kill Natasha now,â Stanya says while stepping into position to see my back wound. âThey commandeered Malayâs body and pushed her magic into Natasha. It nearly killed her, and Malayâs been terrified to touch Nat since.â
âWhat did Nat do to piss them off?â
âI nearly killed Ari,â I say while I turn to my normal position. I take my arm out of the sling and allow her to flex and move it.
âAnd yourself,â Stanya adds.
âWill you please let it go,â I groan.
âThen donât do it again,â she snaps.
âFine,â I huff. âIf weâre in that situation again I wonât save your life.â
âThank you,â she says while flashing me a grin.
I stick out my tongue while Malay raises my arm. âHowâs it looking?â I ask her while she helps me back into my sling.
âBetter than the last time I looked at it.â She answers, moving to my knee next.
âYou mean three days ago?â I ask while grimacing.
She ignores the comment. âYour flexing better, but youâre still swollen. Youâll need to be careful on that leg for a few weeks.â
I groan. âItâs almost worth the overload to just heal myself.â
âDonât you dare,â Gedric says quickly.
âI will kill you myself if you do,â Malay adds. âYour last one nearly killed you.â
âOnly because the Fates forced it.â I pout, but agreeing.
âSeriously, what did I miss?â Halthin demands. âThe Fates usually donât meddle with us.â
âUnless they want you to be their next Servant of the Fates.â I mutter darkly while Stanya flips her hair in annoyance.
âTheyâre petty, and canât take no for an answer. Now no more Fate talk. Theyâre morons and not worth the breath.â Stanya looks to me. âWhere do you want to go from here?â
âThe Ancient Stream is where this all started. It should be able to give us clue as to what the missing true Fate Mark looks like. We have three, know where the fourth is, and now we just need to find the fifth. I canât think of any texts that even mention a fifth mark. Wouldnât someone know if theyâre born with an animal marking? I did, and so did the past others.â
âUnless itâs marked inside the body,â Malay muses. âIt could hide for itâs safety. The answer could be in what the character represents. Your raven mark is on the top of your back, where ravens are mostly found. On top of something.â
âThen explain the deer and owl.â I say, cocking my head. Her theory is intriguing.
âThe deer and owl were inherited. Originally, Brin bore the owl on his shoulder. You mostly see an owl when itâs perched. When it hunts at night, theyâre very hard to spot. The deer, when Master Gilda bared it, was tucked away on her neck, just peaking out from her hairline. Always skittish and hiding.â
I rub my neck as I think about it. âSo what youâre saying, is that the animal mimics itâs favorite spots. If your theory is right, then weâre looking for something that is a predator and likes to hide.â
âThat doesnât narrow it down,â Gedric inserts. âThey all like to. You might want to see why this mark was never mentioned in the past.â
âMaybe thatâs another answer we can get.â I agree.
âWhen do you want to leave?â Stanya asks me, turning her attention towards me.
I look at Halthin. âDo you want to remain here for your rehabilitation, or do you want to come with us?â
Halthin looks at Malay, âAm I able to travel?â
âNot for two more days at minimum.â Malay looks at me. âYou may rehabilitate his magic. Just donât touch it.â
I glower, but turn my attention back to Halthin. âAre you wanting to join us? With my luck, we are guaranteed more Ari encounters.â
Halthin nods. âI would like to see this out.â
I nod. âWe can wait that long.â I look to Stanya. âWeâre definitely going to need to pack warm. Weâre going to need to go down the mountain, and I canât carry us like I did last time.â
She agrees. âIâll slap you if you even try.â
âSame,â Malay says, helping me to my feet. âNow go elevate your leg. Weâll pack some snow to help take some of your swelling down. Pants off missy.â
âYes maâam.â I mutter. I hate this part. My pants are too thick for the snow to properly work, so Gedric uses a slightly thinner cloth, packed with sealent snow, and wraps it around my knee. Itâs freezing and I hate it more than anything. At least it gives me time to catch up on my reading. Malay has graciously lent me her books about the Fates, so Iâve been restudying them.
Gedric folds his arms. âIâll go get the pack ready. Iâll knock before entering so I know youâre decent.â
âYou say this every single time.â I tell him while Malay allows me to lean into her, helping me leave.
âIâll stay with Halthin,â Stanya calls from behind me. It makes sense. She does like him, and he did just wake up from a coma. Whatâs interesting is sheâs actually letting me leave her sight.
âNat, thank you,â Halthin yells after me.
âItâs what friends do,â I say; flashing him a smile before I fully leave the room.
âYou do know, that even if he were to come with you, he cannot use his magic to even light a fire.â Malay warns me. âIf he does, he is almost guaranteed to lose his magic.â
I raise my eyebrow at her. âI remember. Itâs not my first time dealing with it.â
âYouâve been infected twice with blood magic Nat. Do not go for three.â
âI donât think that second time counts. It was less than five minutes, and it hadnât taken root yet.â
âAnd youâre lucky Ari is a coward, or youâd both be dead.â
âI think that still technically solves the problem.â I remind her.
âBut weâd lose you, and a lot of other people.â
That lands hard with me. âI can handle my loss, but youâre right about the others.â
âDonât misread me Natasha. For many, the greatest loss would be you. Ari would be gone, but there would soon be another to take his place. One likely worse. There will never be another you.â
âUnless the Fates have something to say about it,â I mutter, mostly to myself. When we get to my room she helps me onto the bed and helps me off with my pants.
She whistles, gently turning my leg to get a better view of my swollen and bruised knee. When her hand hovers above my knee her palm glows.
âExit that body right now,â I growl; yanking my leg back.
Malay chuckles as she straightens. Her eyes are black as she reaches for me, her entire hand glowing. âDo you see how easy it is for me to hurt you?â Her voice is disoriented, and she starts laughing while I scoot back onto the bed.
âWhat do you want?â I demand, scooting further away to safety.
âYou know what we want Natasha. One final touch should be enough to send you into your final overload. Itâll end you.â
âYouâre pathetic,â I tell it. I decide to call itâs bluff and hold still. âIf you want to kill me, kill me. I have yet to make any agreement with you pathetic bullies. My murder will be in vein.â
The Servant holds still, anger physically seen. âWhen we last spoke, you did.â
âDid I? You might want to replay that back, because I know I didnât.â I lean towards it, making it yank itâs hand back.
âCare to bet?â It growls.
âAnd give you a chance to cheat? No thank you.â I lean forward. âAfraid youâll lose? Go on, touch me.â
The Servant growls, visibly frustrated. I get to my feet, making it take a step back. âLet me guess. Iâm right, and those Fates just confirmed what I told you.â
âDo you want to make a deal?â It hisses.
âA deal? Really?â I ask, flipping my hair. âA deal with what? An outcome where you cheat?â
The Servant snarls and bares its teeth at me. Itâs loud enough to make me nearly cover my ears. In that moment the door swings open. Before any of us can react, the Servant is tackled onto the ground, Gedric locking hard onto Malayâs body.
I waggle my fingers, âArticus, itâs time for you to leave.â
Articus screams, his scream soon morphing into Malayâs real scream.
âWhat was that?â Gedric demands, still holding Malay, who is now sobbing.
âA very angry Servant.â I tell him while I still my heart. Now that I donât have to bluff a Servant, Iâm very aware of just how close to death I came. âThis is going to get annoying.â
