Chapter 46
At that, Victoria turned to the gentle woman next to Vincent and smiled. âItâs been a while, Tess.â
âItâs only been two years. How have you⦠become so skinny?â Teresa Londonâs eyes turned red with
oncoming tears the second she spoke when she saw Victoriaâs abnormally gaunt face.
Vincentâs heart ached at the sight of Teresaâs tears, and he hurriedly wiped them away for her. âDidnât
you just say you were happy to see Tori? How come youâre crying now?â
âAre you really Toriâs brother?!â Teresa glared at him while tears rolled down her cheeks like beads of a
broken string. âWho knows what kind of torment Tori has suffered in the last two years when she looks
this skinny?!â
âVince, Tess, letâs talk somewhere else.â Victoria swept her gaze across their surroundings. There were
many passersby, and it wasnât a good place for them to talk.
If someone snitched to Christian that the Colemans were still keeping in touch with her, what she had
been doing lately would be for nothing.
As Victoriaâs loving sibling and in-law, they knew the young woman liked grilled fish, so they drove to a
seafood grill.
Teresa was a fan of grilled fish too, but right then, she had no appetite when she looked at Victoriaâs
scar-ridden and gaunt face from across the table.
She picked up her cutlery, only to put them down. âTori, you⦠your lifeâs been miserable in the last two
years, hasnât it?â
âYouâre imagining it, Tess. Criminals are still human. How bad could things get?â Victoriaâs gaze
dimmed for a second, then she smiled and gave Teresa a piece of fish meat. âActually, Iâve heard quite
a few interesting stories inside.â
âDo tell.â Teresa felt even worse, seeing that her sister-in-law didnât want to bring up her misery.
However, she didnât force Victoria to unveil her scars either.
Never one to conceal his emotions, Vincent picked the bones out of the fish grimly before putting the
bone-ridden meat into his dear sister and wifeâs plates.
âA guy that scammed about twenty million out of people loved playing games. When the police caught
him at a cybercafe, he asked that they let him finish the round before following them compliantly
because his teammates would yell at him for being absent mid-game.â
âAnd then there was a murderer. For eight years, he had been cautious with his actions. But he got
caught in the end because a face recognition device caught him when he entered a concert.â
Victoria related interesting stories about a few prison inmates with a smile, and Teresa would laugh
along every now and then. However, everyone knew no one could laugh. They were only doing so for
the otherâs sake.
âEnough about that!â Vincent put his cutlery down and asked Victoria grimly, âI heard you were forced to
kneel; you even got harassed and targeted at the club. Is that all true?â
At that, Teresa nudged him and shot him a look. But he kept his gaze at Victoria, not taking no for an
answer.
Stumped, Victoria drooped her eyelids and said, âTheyâre all just rumors. Donât people also say that Iâm
a heinous murderer?â
Vincent bore into her for a moment and grabbed his beer. After chugging it down, he slammed it back
onto the table. âYouâre lying, Tori.â His voice had deepened quite a lot.
Victoria said nothing but only put a piece of fish into her mouth. However, she couldnât taste anything.
It was a silent admission.
âWhy didnât you⦠Why didnât you tell us?â Teresaâs gaze was filled with mixed emotions.
She knew her sister-in-lawâs temper well. The young girl was absolutely cocky and would f*ck anything
and everything. But now, she was being mangled to this degree.
âWhat will that do?â Victoria put another piece of fish into her mouth and snorted self-deprecatingly.
âHave you and Vince worry about me?â
Slam! Vincent slammed his beer on the table. The noise was so loud that a few other tables looked in
their direction.
âPipe down!â Teresa pinched his arm.
âIf no oneâs willing to fight Thatcher in Bloomsway, then Iâll get the new secretary of the municipal
committee!â Vincent stood up with his arms propped against the table, bellowing with bloodshot eyes. âI
refuse to believe that Thatcher can get away with everything in Bloomsway!â
âCalm down. Donât get impetuous.â Teresa tugged at his sleeve, urging him to sit down. Unlike her hot-
headed husband, sheâd think twice before doing anything.
Vincent broke free from her, the veins on his neck bulging. âCalm down? If I calm down any further,
people are going to f*cking screw Tori to death!â
His lash-out took Teresa aback. She pursed her lips and said nothing more, but her eyes had turned
red.
âAre you mad?! Why lash out at Tess when sheâs done nothing to you?!â Victoria put her cutlery down
and sighed helplessly, shooting her brother a glance.
Vincent regretted doing so the second he snapped. Once he cleared his throat, he hurriedly coaxed his
wife, who only looked a little better after all the sweet talk.
âNot even the new secretary of the municipal committee can help you.â At that, Victoria briefed them
about Janiceâs assistance, and the table fell silent.
Moments later, Vincent ruffled his hair in annoyance. âIf weâre really out of options, then Iâll just run over
that b*stard and go to jail. What can be worse than that?!ââ
âYouâre not alone anymore. Can you at least think about Tess and your twins before you say or do
anything?â Victoriaâs icy heart warmed up a little when she saw her brotherâs still bandaged head.
It was really nice to know that someone still cared about her.
âDonât do this, Vincent. Donât do that, Vincent. What do you guys expect me to do then?! Watch that
b*stard mangle you to death?! Fat chance!â caterwauled Vincent angrily.
âI didnât say Iâm going to take it lying down, did I?â At that, Victoria muttered under Vincent and Teresaâs
watchful gazes, âIâve already thought of a way to leave the club. Donât you guys worry.â
But when the couple asked what she had in mind, she said nothing.
After dinner, Victoria went back to the dorm.
Gabrielle was in as well, feeling somewhat awkward upon seeing Victoriaâs return. âIâm really sorry
about earlier today,â she apologized awkwardly about half an hour later.
Who knew if she apologized for using Victoria to get to Christian and the Spritz siblings or for
abandoning Victoria.
Victoria hummed a response softly upon hearing so and said nothing more.
âVictoria.â Needing to sate her curiosity, Gabrielle asked gingerly after a moment of hesitation. âMiss
Spritzâs leg⦠Did you really do it?â
Victoria stiffened for a moment, then hummed softly like before.
âMiss Spritz is pretty and gentle. Sheâs also pretty amiable. Why would you want to break her leg?â
Gabrielle went over to Victoriaâs front.
âI canât stand her.â Victoria didnât even look up but only sorted out the clothes she had bought earlier
that day. âAlso, I didnât just want to break it but kill her. She got lucky and survived, though.â
Gabrielle fell silent for a long time after hearing so.
Victoria, on the other hand, kept her attention on sorting out her shopping. Sometime later, she
grabbed two clothes and put them on Gabrielleâs bed.
She didnât like owing favors.
âI donât think youâre that kind of person, though.â Gabrielle suddenly spoke up.
Victoriaâs hands on the clothes froze for a moment, and she looked up at Gabrielle with misty eyes.
Just then, a knock came at the door. Gabrielle jogged to it. After taking the clothes from a colleague,
she unfolded them to take a look, only to be gobsmacked. âAre you sure this is for Victoria and not an
older cleaning ladyâs uniform?â
âOf course, Iâm sure. Iâm just as stumped as you are. From what I know, only Victoriaâs uniform has
been changed to this one. I swear that someone will certainly file a complaint if she wears this!â said
the colleague as she rolled her eyes before leaving.
