Chapter 18: 16 | Devaun

Few weeks later, Spring Break happened.

My family and I ended up traveling to stay with my grandparents back at our old town for most the break. It was uneventful. I was not too thrilled to be back.

I saw a lot of familiar faces when I was accompanying my parents and grandparents around town. I pretended not to notice them because I didn't want to deal with the small talk. My headphones were my only saving grace.

It has been a while since the last time I visited my old town. Oscar and I have been biking around town, visiting the old places we used to go to.

Greta had already planned a trip with her friends for the break, but she was able to make it and joined us later that week.

One of the only good things about this trip was getting to see two of my friends that I kept in contact with since I left, Connor and Orlo. They were really my only friends back then.

The other good thing was Bri and I were texting a lot over the week. She was saying she was bored out of her mind with nothing better to do. I replied that we can do anything she wants when I get back home.

I've been thinking of possibly wanting to tell her how I feel, but I don't want to risk our friendship. I was planning on asking her out as my date for the Junior Prom. The dance was still two months or so away. I still have some time to plan on how I will ask her out as my date and hope everything goes well when it's time to execute it.

A tiny part of me feels like she might like me back and she will say yes when I do ask her out, but maybe it's just my delusions talking. But sometimes when we're hanging out or talking in class, she does these little things that I notice that gives me the impressions that she might possibly like me. Then again, maybe I'm only imagining things.

Why does liking someone have to be so complicated?

The rest of the break went by slow and fast at the same time. I was not too keen on going back to school knowing I have to get up early again. I fucked up my sleeping schedule big time over the break and I need to fix as soon as possible. Since basketball season was over, I have more free time in my hands since I don't spend it either practicing or playing. It was nice not hearing coach yelling at us for once.

The first day back was hectic. The halls were filled with students catching up on their spring break. You almost couldn't get through with the amount of people filling the halls.

Classes though were uneventful. Teachers weren't forcing their lessons down our throats which was a good thing because my brain was still on vacation mode. I slept in most of my morning classes since we weren't doing much.

Walking into Chemistry class, I saw Bri already sitting in our usual place while typing on her phone. I walked up to her.

"Hey, stranger." I greeted her as I sat on my seat. "How was your morning?"

Bri looked up from her phone and smiled. "It was fine until Mr. David decided to have a short test. I did not pass and it was recorded." She said, her tone disappointed. "How was yours?"

"It was a bit boring, but okay. I was asleep for most of it." I replied, chuckling. "Ms. Finley did make us write an essay about what we did the entire break."

Bri let out a loud groan. "I have her as my last subject."

"Three paragraphs . . . with at least five sentences each."

"You're kidding? I barely did anything but sleep and eat. I'm going to write, 'For the first day of the break I ate a piece of toast. Second day, I ate toast again, but with butter to spice things up.'" She said sarcastically while also using hand gestures to make it more dramatic.

"You'd get an immediate perfect score for that jazz hands. But not so much for the essay part." I laughed.

"Ouch, but I'll take the compliment for my jazz hands."

"Anytime."

Then I remembered I bought a little mushroom keychain I found at a vintage store. When I saw it, I immediately thought of her because it was a button mushroom and she was as cute as a button.

"Before I forget, I got you a little something." I said, rummaging through my bag until I found the keychain and handed it to her. "I saw it at a store and thought of you."

A hint of pink painted her cheeks. Bri took the keychain from me and stared it at it for a second. She looked up and I can tell she was touched by the gesture and looked delighted.

I hid a smile.

"Dev, this is so cute." She gushed, looking at the keychain then back at me. "Thank you." She grabbed her bag and hooked it to one of the zipper thingy. "There, all done!"

Seeing that Bri really liked my small gift brought some warmth in my chest.

Fuck! I'm acting like a whipped guy.

Screw that, I am exactly that and I should not be ashamed of it. Feeling ashamed would mean I'm also ashamed of liking Bri, which I'm not. That's the last thing I'll ever do.

If I would be given the chance to scream how much I like her from the rooftop of our school, I will gladly take that opportunity with honor.

Hmm, actually that's not a bad idea, minus the screaming part. I don't want to look like a raging lunatic. But confessing to her and asking her out to the dance on the school rooftop doesn't sound terrible, it kinda sounds like it might give me an actual shot with Bri.

And so with that, I started brainstorming ideas inside my head.

A/N:

Hi, I know I've been gone for a while. Sorry about that. But I just started school for almost a month now and it has been hard ngl. It doesn't help that I'm a graduating student, so I actually gotta get all the things done.

Anyways, I will try my absolute best to update more frequently despite my busy schedule, but I can't promise you on that. My plan for this book will be at least 20 chapters, but we will see.
