Chapter 15: 13 | Devaun

I have never been more glad that midterms are over.

My last remaining braincell is on life support because it's about to die.

My head has been pounding since the start of the week. I don't think I even did good with answering my exams. But I'm more relieved that it's over for now until my anxiety kicks in later on and will start dreading what the possible results I will get on the test.

I needed them to be at least decent, that's the least I could do to maintain my spot on team. The principal doesn't appreciate it if we're flunking in any of our classes.

The hallways were filled with students eager to get out of school. I was on my way to my locker when I spotted Bri talking to some people by the sides. I smiled and went up to her when they left and pretended to bump her shoulder.

"Oops, sor—Dev!" Her face went from being apologetic to surprised. "I didn't notice you were there."

I laughed. "So how was exams?"

She lets out a tired sigh that makes me want to pull her in a hug until she's alright.

"I ran out of time during my History test, so I randomly wrote whatever I can think of in the identifications." Bri confessed, smiling sheepishly. "I hope that I will get some of it right. What about you?"

"Let’s just say I tried my best at answering." I admitted, pursing my lips. "The important take away from this is I'm still alive and grades don't define as a person."

Bri chuckled, rolling her eyes playfully. "Not until you actually got a good score on the test. You’re one of the smartest people I know, you’ll do perfectly fine."

I tried to mask how affected I was by her words and control myself from jumping and screaming in the hallway in giddiness. I'm forcing myself to stop my mouth from forming into a huge smile just because she said I was one of the smartest people she knows.

I feel like a middle schooler who just got a kiss on the cheek and was now acting all shy and giggly in front of them.

That's exactly what I'm feeling right now.

And I’m not really ashamed about it.

"Where were you headed to anyway?" She broke my thoughts.

"Oh, uhm, I was on my way to my locker to get some of my things." I answered. "You want to walk with me? It's just around the corner."

She immediately nodded her head. "Alright."

We walked to my locker while talking more about the midterms and how we struggle for most of it, then our conversation lead up to the event tomorrow.

Turns out in Stonewall High, everyone in the school gets together for an annual spring picnic at the local park and enjoy a relaxing day. I was looking forward for tomorrow and it was one of the thing that kept me going a while ago while I was suffering during the exams.

I already informed Momma beforehand about the picnic and she went ahead and brainstormed a whole menu for me to bring for the event. She has started prepping the food this morning and I'm very excited to eat it all.

"Are you excited for tomorrow's picnic?" I asked, giving her a glance.

"Oh, yes!" Bri said excitedly, but then her tone turned grim. "Although I'm assigned on dessert duty, so I have some baking to do when I get home. Well, it's either that or I have to make a trip to the bakery. I'm really not a baker."

I cracked up a laugh. "If you want any baking tips, give me a text. I can ask my momma your questions."

Yes, I did just think of a way so we can text each other later. I guess my brain does still have the ability to think.

"I don't want to bother you." She declined the offer.

Oh, you can bother me anytime and I will certainly be thankful.

"I can just type it out and hopefully Google will have some answers."

My lips pouted a little. There goes my brilliant thinking.

The sun was shining the day of the school picnic. Gentle winds were also present. The guys and I were just setting up our spot that Ryan found for us right near a tree.

"Dev, can you ask your moms to adopt me, too?" Lucas called out as I heard some rustling in the background as I fixed the picnic blanket.

I turned around and saw Lucas rummaging through my picnic basket. I quickly went over to him and snatched the basket away from him, but not before showing him my middle finger.

"And to answer your question: No." I sassed. "And you also won't get to have any of this." I pointed at the picnic basket.

He groaned loudly. "But I just saw some really delicious looking spring rolls in their!"

"Well, too bad." I taunted, placing down the basket somewhere safe.

I looked around to see if Bri had arrived. I looked around for her friends too because if one's there usually one of them is close around.

Sadly, Bri didn't text me yesterday, not even asking for a single question, but she did send me this morning a picture of the brownies she baked last night.

Rushing past me, I almost came in contact with a speeding Ivy.

"Ivy, have you seen Bri?!" I shouted at the running figure.

She stopped and turned around. "I'm kinda in a hurry, but she's at our spot somewhere over there!" She shouted in a rush and pointed to the right before running off again.

"Thanks!" I shouted again before walking to the direction she pointed.

A/N: Not too happy with this one. It's more of a short filler chapter. Hopefully the next one will be better.
