Chapter 58
âAre you doing alright at the Harper front?â
Janet asked Angelina as they went into her office.
âGood. It is a lot of work to try to keep her out of troubles. But there is nothing I canât handle.â
Angelina closed the door and walked to the fridge. âSomething to drink? Water? Iced tea?â
âWater will be fine. Thank you.â
Janet sat down on the couch and said, âWe can always throw Harper into jail and let her rot in a dark cell. You donât have to be trapped by her.â
Angelina walked over with two glasses of water and set one of them in front of Janet. Taking her seat next to Janet, Angelina said with a smile, âNo, I donât feel trapped. Instead, I feel my passion for life being rekindled. Do you know how many times I have imagined Harper crawling under my feet and begging for my forgiveness? It was the only thing that guided me through the dark times. I am practically living my
dream right now.â
âBut Harper doesnât seem to feel sorry about what her did at all,â Janet said.
âOh, we will get there. Slowly.â
Angelina shrugged.
âMany nurses and maids here were once victims of Harper. They would love to help me get Harper back on the right track. So anyway, what do you need me for today?â
Janet set the glass back on the table and leaned forward to Angelina, âI am here to ask you about a member of the Riverside Packâ¦Maxie.
The moment Janet said that name, she noticed a strange look flickering across Angelinaâs eyes.
âWhy? Have you heard about her?â Janet pursued eagerly.
âWell, yeahâ¦But itâs a long time ago.â Angelina frowned, âDid something happen to her?â
âI think so, yeah. But neither her nor her maids are willing to tell me what happened. I suspect that it has something to do with the Gamma of Riverside Pack, Baron.â
Janet told Angelina everything that happened today.
The furrow between Angelinaâs brows kept getting deeper.
ââ¦That bastard,â Angelina gritted at the end of Janetâs story.
âAs you can see, Angelina, I am here to help,â Janet said. âAnd not just to help Maxie, but also to help the entire Riverside Pack army. We will go to war with the rogues very soon. We canât let a dirtbag like Baron lead the troops. We have to take him down!â
A resentful look appeared on Angelinaâs face when she heard Janet said âthe rogues.â
âWell, no one hates the rogues more than I do.â
Angelina gave Janet a brief smile.
âAnd to answer your earlier question⦠Yeah, I do know what happened to Maxie.â Janet sat up straighter, listening intently.
âMaxie started off as a soldier in Baronâs fatherâs troops. Baronâs father appreciated her talent and soon pointed her as the captain. She was a great warrior. Many girls would sneak out during lunch break and went to the training field to see her train. And she was nice to us too, unlike most ladies and nobles. So everyone loves her downstairs.â
So Maxie was Baronâs fatherâs right-hand warrior.
It explained why Baron trusted her with all his dirty secrets.
âAnd thenâ¦Baronâs father died. Baron took over his troopsâ¦And everything changed.â
Angelina tightened her fists. Her body was shaking slightly.
âOne night, me and the other maids were dusting Maxieâs room and bumped into her coming back from training. Her hair was messy, and she got bloody lips and bruised foreheadâ¦And most importantly, her clothes were all ripped apart.â
Janet widened her eyes.
A wild anger took hold of her.
Baronâ¦That son of a bitch! How dare him!!
âNobody tried to expose what Baron did?â Janet snapped.
âWho dares? We are all lowly servants. We would be skinned alive if we were caught gossiping about our masters. And Maxieâ¦you can imagine the awkward situation she was in. Baronâs father was basically a mentor to her. How can she foul mouth her mentorâs son? Plus, Baron is well respected in the army. No one will believe what
she said.â
Poor Maxie.
Nobody would believe her. So she could only suck it up herself.
For years, she cleaned Baronâs messes quietly and endured his disgusting harassment. If Janet didnât find this out, how long would this keep going? âThis must stop. NOW.â
Janet gritted with rage burning inside of her.
âBaronâ¦that son of a bitch deserves to die a thousand times.â
Angelina nodded, âI was glad that you came to me today, Janet. If you didnât step out, I doubt anyone would ever do.â
She paused and let out a sarcastic snort, âAnd it is funny. Harper framed an innocent person for raping, but the true victim of a se xual assault was forced to stay in silent. This world is so fu cking twisted.â
âAnd they are all going to hell. One after another.â
Janet said coldly and stood up from her seat.
âThank you today, Angelina. I think I have works to do now.â
Janet turned and walked towards the door.
But Angelina called behind her back again.
Her eyes were gleaming with a sign of fear when she looked at Janet.
âBe careful of the rogues, Janet.â
She said.
âThey are more dangerous than you thinkâ¦especially their king.â
âYou have met with the rogue king?â Janet asked in surprise.
The head of the rogues was a very mysterious figure.
Although everybody called that person the âRogue King,â nobody knew if that was a man or woman, let alone what that person looked like.
âYeahâ¦Once. At a party.â
Angelina gulped nervously as though she was going through some very terrible memories.
much.â
âI know that those people are barbaric. But it exceeds your imagination, way
She said with a quivering voice full of aghast.
âAnd that is why you need the best warriors in this war. Or you will lose. And donât want to end up in the roguesâ hands after losing.â
you
Angelinaâs warning carried significant meaning.
As much as Janet loved to stay and ask more questions about the rogues, she still had Baron to take care of.
So after setting another time to discuss this with Angelina, Janet left the clinic and went back to the training field.
It was approaching dusk, and soldiers were leaving the training field at the end of a day.
Janet pushed her away through the crowd, trying to find Balvina.
Yet she spotted Maxie in the distance first.
Maxie wore a baseball hat that was pulled down low to cover most of her face.
She was dragging a cart of training facilities and heading toward the warehouse.
She seemed depressed and defeated.
âMaxie!â Janet cried running towards her.
Maxie froze and turned around. Her eyes widened with shock as Janet came close. Then she took a sudden step back and snapped:
âWhat are you still doing here? I said. We have nothing to talk about!â
âMaxie-â
âIt is still about that account book, isnât it?â Maxie hissed, keeping her voice low. âI wonât give it to you. And if you keep pestering me, I will tell Baron about this. I swear!â
âNo! It is not about the account book. It is about you!â
Janet grabbed Maxieâs arm. Maxie quivered significantly. Janet must have touched the bruises on her forearm.
Looking directly into Maxieâs eyes, Janet said, âI know what happened to you, Maxie. That is not right. It has to stop. NOW!â
âWhat? Howâ¦Who told you!â Maxie gasped in panic.
âIt doesnât matter. But you canât let that bastard keep bullying you. Baronâs father wouldnât want to see this either. Plus, if you keep your mouth shut, who knows how many innocent girls will keep becoming Baronâs victims?â
That was when Maxie started to hesitate.
She stared back at Janet with a clear struggling look on her face and shook her head, âNo, no wayâ¦Baron is too powerfulâ¦â
âEven more powerful than the Alpha?â Janet said urgently, âAlpha Daran is with us this time. You have our support! This is your chance! Take it, Maxie!â
âI-I canât! You donât understand. Baron has gotten my-â
âWhat are we talking about here?â a voice appeared behind Maxieâs back, interrupting her words.
Baron strolled to their side and wrapped an arm around Maxieâs shoulder casually, with Owen grinning like a fool behind his back.
Glancing at Janetâs furious face, Baron chuckled and wrapped a lock of Maxieâs hair around his finger playfully.
âIs someone bothering my Maxie?â he asked in a cold, drawling voice.
