âIs she okay?â Bertie asked, calling her immediately.
âI think so, but inside she must be suffering.â
âTake good care of her.â
âI will. I canât help but think that ever since she enrolled, bad things have happened to her.â
âShe should never have enrolled at Ocean University.â
âWhy?â
Bertie did not reply. Some things, even he didnât know too much about. âItâs late, get some sleep.â
He hung up on her, and Zofia, looking at her phone, felt quite frustrated. Why would he be so vague?
The next day, Kathy woke quite early. Benedict was back, and she wanted to train with him. She went to the hospital, which she still felt a bit apprehensive about. The patient whoâd been infected had not yet woken. Because Aaron was not a neurologist, the patient had been passed on to Benedict.
Aaron, seeing Kathy, narrowed his eyes. âBenedict, why have you brought Kathy?â
âSheâs my student.â
âHer behavior isnât acceptable, the president wants her expelled.â
âProfessor Fisher, I havenât been expelled yet, I have a right to be here,â Kathy responded coolly.
Aaron scoffed, âIs that the sort of attitude a student should have?â
âYou disrespected me first. I donât think my attitude is the problem.â
âYou! Kathy...â
Coldly Benedict cut in, âAll right, Aaron, Iâll take over with the patient. Thanks for your work up until now.â
Aaron flushed and stormed away, and Kathy heaved a sigh of relief before focusing on the task at hand. But it wasnât long before a middle-aged woman entered asking, âAre you Kathy?â
âHi,â Kathy replied, âIâmââ
But before she could finish, the girl stormed over and shoved her, saying, âYouâre despicable, itâs your fault that my son wonât wake up!â
Kathy paled, leaning against the wall for support, but it was as if the woman before her had gone madâshe wanted to shove her again. Kathy steadied herself and fended off the other woman, saying, âIâm sorry for whatâs happened to this patient, but right now the incident is unclear, please calm down.â
âHow can I calm down? This is all your fault, itâs your fault he was infected, it was you!â Her voice was quite loud, attracting the attention of many in the hallway. They all looked at Kathy with reproach.
âSo it was her fault... I heard she used surgical tools that hadnât been disinfected...â
âNo way, our hospital is one of the best, how could we have that sort of person here?â
âSheâs a student, still training, she must have made a terrible mistake...â
Kathy heard the discussion, leaning against the wall. She tried to keep her eyes on the woman before her, but felt lightheaded, her complexion growing increasingly pale. She could hardly support herself. Then a voice broke through the haze. Kathy tried to open her eyes, and glimpsed a familiar figure. Was it Joseph?
Arms wrapped around her, steadied her, and Bertie heard her murmur, âJoseph...â
His expression darkened. Looking at the people around, he said angrily, âThis is a hospital, everybody keep quiet!â Then he picked Kathy up and took her to the emergency room.
But the people didnât clear out. Benedict left the patientâs room and heard all the clamor. He furrowed his brow. How could they all be gossiping about Kathy? And it was all negative, even though the facts hadnât come out yet.
...
Kathy woke an hour later. Bertie sat beside her, his gaze never leaving her form. Her first impression was that she was in an unfamiliar place, and that before sheâd passed out, thereâd been quite a commotion. It was as if she could still hear their voices. She smiled wryly.
Bertie looked at her with concern. Heâd never seen her like this before. Clearly she was hurting, yet she smiled. It made his heart ache. Heâd been gripping her hand, but she brushed it aside. Shakily she asked, âHow am I here?â
âYou passed out.â
My Sweetheart âI see. And youâve been here the whole time?â she asked, looking at him. Sheâd thought the figure from right before sheâd blacked out had been Josephâs. but he was in BV City. Thinking of it now, she realized sheâd not heard from him in two days.
Immediately she searched for her phone. She wanted to speak to Joseph. Bertie passed it to her, and watched as she dialed Josephâs number. He pursed his lips, stood, and said, âIâll go buy you something to eat.â
âSorry for the trouble,â she said distractedly. Joseph did not answer when she called, and she couldnât help but worry. So she called John.
âMiss Kathy, heâs busy...â
âOkay, if he gets a chance, please have him call me. Thanks.â
âGot it.â John hung up and looked at his boss, cold sweat dripping down his back. âSir, Miss Kathy requests that you call her.â
âOkay,â said Joseph. Yet he made no move to do so. John didnât dare say anything, though Joseph was not busy at that moment...
Some time later, Joseph left the hotel. Along the river was a restaurant, its interior romantic and tasteful. Nearly all its patrons were couples. Joseph entered expressionlessly and sat down at the best table. Ella approached.
She wore a long red dress that hugged her figure, and looked bewitching. Yet she was no more than twenty. Coyly she said, âIâd half-thought you werenât coming.â
âYou dared threaten me. How could I not come?â he smiled coldly.
âYou know, I like you.â Faced with him, she couldnât control her feelings. A year ago heâd driven her out of City N, and her parents had divorced. Sheâd gone to live with her mother, changed her name, but her feelings for Joseph had never changed.
Now she wasnât Sophie Fisher, but Ella Bridges. Yet Ella still loved Joseph. Though sheâd never be Sophie again, sheâd go after what Sophie had wanted.
âYou say you like me, yet you threaten me,â he noted coolly.
âItâs all I can do. I know you and Kathy have divorced, so Iâve got a chance.â She pursed her lips hopefully. She always wanted to act mature, but before Joseph, she was just a little girl.
