Seeing Marcel Jefferson being hit, Lindsay Carpenter stood still as reason slowly began to return to her.
Purple Summers and another legal intern helped Jefferson up.
The bailiff took control of the situation, and one of them came over to ask if they needed to go to the hospital.
Jefferson gingerly touched his split lip, shaking his head. With only an hour left before the court session, they had to quickly come up with a strategy. A trip to the hospital would waste precious time they did not have.
Purple handed him a tissue, and as Jefferson spread his hand to look, he saw it was covered in bright red blood.
The bailiffs, meaning well, led them to a rest room to avoid any more impulsive confrontations with Leon Brownâs men before the hearing began.
Brownâs bodyguards were robust; Jefferson was frail. A single punch had left him seeing stars for a long time.
His nose and mouth were bleeding to varying degrees, but the bleeding stopped after he rinsed with cold water, leaving his face swollen and bruised.
Lindsay felt terribly sorry for him and regretfully said, âI wonât fight it, Mr. Jefferson, I wonât fight the case anymore! Iâll spill all of his dirty secrets if he leaves me no way out, barefoot is not afraid of wearing shoes!â

âArenât you in a hurry to get money for surgery?â Jefferson said, âDonât worry, I will do my best to help you get compensation.â
Jeffersonâs mind was racing. The rapist charge was clearly not going to stand; therefore, they might have to take a step back and try for unintentional injury, as they had the injury report in hand. That kind of injury could not possibly be dismissed with a mere monetary transaction.
It just meant that the compensation they could obtain would be lessâ¦
Jefferson felt unsure, and subconsciously looked up for Purple Summers, wanting to hear her opinion.
Purple stood by the window, on the phone with Alexander Summers.
For todayâs court hearing, Alexander had not come but instead had reserved a spot at an upscale restaurant in Kingsley City, waiting to celebrate with them.
Alexander disliked visiting places like courts and police stations, finding them unlucky.
âCan you still contact that hacker from last time?â Purple asked him, âThe chubby oneâ¦â
Alexander was astute and immediately surmised that Purple was in trouble. He asked, âWhat do you need to find out?â
âA hostess from Venus Nightclub in Kingsley City, named Charlotte Bishop, was supposed to be our witness, but she turned against us last minute,â Purple said, âShe claimed she was with Lindsay on Fortuna Road on July 30th, but she was definitely somewhere else. I need her alibi.ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
After a brief pause, Purple added, âAnd the court session starts in forty-five minutes.â
Their time was running short.
Alexander hung up without a word, going to contact the hacker for her.
Purple ended the call, pulled out a few pages from the injury report, and handed them to Jeffersonâs legal intern, instructing him to print several copies.
âThe clearer, the better. Emphasize the medical expenses here, make it stand out so the jury can see it clearly at a glance.â
The lawyers at Prominence Law Firm respected Purple; upon hearing her instructions they immediately took the materials and hurried off to print them.
Jefferson, looking at the scant evidence remaining and thinking about the witnesses who had turned against them, sighed in frustration, âI was careless.â
He felt he had let Lindsay downâa case that was nearly a sure win had been pushed into a corner by the opposition. It was humiliating.
Purple looked down at the forms just sent over by the opposing lawyer and heard Jeffersonâs vexed voice. She comforted him, âItâs not your carelessness. We are new to this, while they have the advantage of time, location, and people.â
She put down the materials in her hand and said to Jefferson, âAfter the court session this afternoon, ask the judge to allow you to speak on behalf of the representation, and Iâll do the defense.â
Jefferson blinked in surprise and then replied, ââ¦Okay.â
