Inside the Xander residence, the atmosphere was gloomy. There was an ice casket in the funeral hall.
In front of the ice casket, there was an altar lamp. A brazier was placed in front of the funeral hall, too.Lily and Yechiel were lighting candles. Lily sat on the ground while Yechiel knelt. Yechiel sighed as he lit the candle. Lily lit a candle, too. She was crying. Occasionally, she would say, âNancy, may you rest in peace. Iâll keep praying for you. I hope youâll visit me in my dreams and tell me who hurt you. I wonât keep you waiting. No matter who it is, Iâll make her pay with her life.â From time to time, she would cry in silence. Beads of teardrops would fall onto the ground.
It was indeed uncomfortable to watch. The event host and his employees were giving a eulogy at a nearby table. They shared fond memories of Nancy. Some people wrote condolence letters. These ceremonial rituals were the oldest traditional rites of Chanaea. Nancyâs friends, juniors, and the servants of the Xander family were wearing white mourning clothes. The elders were not wearing mourning clothes but had changed into black or plain white garbs. Dressed in black, Sybil looked at the ice casket and sighed. Seeing Lee coming over, she immediately helped him. âLee, please donât be too upset.â
She had heard that Nancy was the bone marrow donor for Leeâs transplant procedure. She was worried that Lee would feel upset when he knew that Nancy had passed away. âAlright,â Lee replied.
He did not feel too upset about Nancyâs death Firstly, he was not that close to Nancy. Secondly, in the few times they had interacted, he felt that Nancy was cunning. However, as her uncle, he should attend her funeral and pay his respects. Besides, he also wanted to know which bastard had accused Annalise of murdering Nancy. âLee, youâre here. Come light a candle for Nancy, too,â Lily said with red eyes. Lee nodded and knelt.
Lily took a few candles and handed them to him. Lee lighted candle after candle. Lily said, âLee, youâre Nancyâs uncle. Youâll treat her with fairness, wonât you?â âWhat?â Lee asked. He could vaguely guess what Lily was trying to say. He was not too happy about it. If he had the same measure of affection for everyone, he would treat them equally. If he did not, how could he treat everyone equally? Nancy was his niece, whereas Annalise was his daughter. He cared for Annalise much more than he did Nancy.
How was he supposed to treat them fairly? Although Annálise was not related to him by blood, she was Heatherâs daughter. Heather had already passed. He would protect Annalise even if he had to risk his life.
How could he abandon Annalise for Nancyâs sake? Even if Annalise had caused Nancyâs death because of her willfulness and terrible temper, he would still protect her. Besides, Annalise was a reasonable person. Nancyâs death might not be related to Annalise. Even if it were, Nancy must have caused trouble first. That was the only reason why Annalise would have killed her by accident. Lily cried and said, âYou will treat Nancy and Annalise equally, wonât you? If Annalise had killed Nancy, you wouldnât cover up the truth for her, would you?â She had to be prepared beforehand. In case they killed Annalise, Lee might retaliate against them.
âMrs. Zeller, everything must be based on evidence. If you donât have the evidence, please donât spout nonsense. I donât care what your attitude is like with the Zeller family. But donât use your ridiculous and pretentious attitude to treat my family member,â Lee said bluntly. He continued, âAnnalise is my daughter. I know her very well. She has a gentle temper and a kind heart. She would never kill anyone.â He was telling Lily not to frame others just because her daughter was dead. Hearing Leeâs words, Yechiel was unhappy. He put on airs. âLee, Annalise grew up in the countryside, after all. She has a wild personality. You didnât raise her. Youâve only just found out she was your daughter. How much do you know about her? As the saying goes, you canât judge a book by its cover. A wild person like her could do anything.â
âThose who claim that Annalise killed Nancy, show me the evidence. If you donât have any evidence, donât blame my harsh words.â Leeâs expression suddenly darkened. Lily immediately looked at Yechiel with dissatisfaction. She could not hide her disdain. It was as if her expression was saying, âLook at you. Youâve been the Xander Groupâs president for 20 years. But whatâs the use? You donât have any power at all. Youâre equally bad in bed, too. Absolutely useless.â Yechiel was instantly triggered by Lilyâs gaze. He raised his voice slightly. âLee, letâs put it this way. If Annalise is behind this incident, as her uncle, I wonât let her off, either.â âHmph.â Lee snorted. He turned around and left.
Sybil immediately chased after Lee and held him. âLee, donât be angry. Itâll only damage your health.
Iâm sure itâs not Annalise.â âI know,â Lee replied. Sybil sent Lee back to his villa and reminded him, âRest well, Lee. If Annalise comes over, Iâll let you know.â Now, Annalise was the Xander familyâs daughter. Now that Nancy was dead, Annalise should be visiting them soon. âAlright,â Lee replied. He had already arranged for someone to inform him as soon as Annalise arrived. He was a Xander. How could he possibly allow others to make Annaliseâs life difficult? Lily lit the candles for a while before her phone started ringing. She glanced at the caller ID and knew it was an important call.
She told Yechiel, âKeep lighting the candles.â She got up and went to a quiet place to answer the call.
On the other end of the phone, the person she had hired reported, âMrs. Zeller, we havenât completed our investigation yet, but weâve already made some discoveries.â âKeep going,â Lily said coldly. The person on the other end of the phone answered, âMiss Nancy had kidnapped Old Mr. Parks. Afterward, Annalise rushed over to them.â âWas Julian not at the scene?â Lily asked. She did not believe that Annalise could kill Nancy. Others might not know about Nancyâs skills, but as her mother, how could she not know?
Nancy was the association. She was also mentored by Todd Edmund, the Kickboxing King. Across the entire Chanaea, only a handful of people were more skilled than Nancy. Nancy died because her throat was slit with a knife. With Nancyâs skills, how could her murderer cut her throat if it wasnât someone more skilled than her? âJulian rushed over, too, but Annalise arrived first. She brought someone with her. That personâs name is Trevor Stinson. He runs a detective agency and a boxing club. He must be a skilled boxer. Mrs. Zeller, what Iâm trying to say is⦠Could that person have killed Miss Nancy?â
âInvestigate this thoroughly,â Lily ordered. Her tone was cold.
It did not matter if Trevor or Julian killed Nancy. Annalise had to die. If Trevor did it, Trevor would have to die, too. As for Julian, they could not touch him for the time being. They would have to find another opportunity in the future. âYes, Mrs. Zeller. Weâre looking into it. Once we find the people Miss Nancy had brought over to the scene, weâll know everything.â âHurry up.â Lily could not wait. Lily had raised her daughter for many years, and someone had murdered her. Lily could not take this lying down. After hanging up the phone, she turned around and bumped into Yechiel. She glared at him in anger. âWhat are you doing?â
