And she couldnât afford to take any risks. Aiden had been the driving force behind her will to live, and she could not lose him!
Rosalie knew that she had no way to get involved in this matter, so she said, âTell me if you need my help.â
âThank you!â Amelia smiled. âYou have helped me a lot. If it werenât for you, perhaps Aiden wouldnât be able to-â
Amelia was suddenly interrupted by a figure that burst into the diner.
Under the shocked looks of Amelia and Rosalie, Calvin sprinted inside panting, and grabbed Rosalieâs arm before asking anxiously, âAre you going to marry Jonathan?â
Rosalie was astounded because she had kept it a secret and had only told Lillian and Amelia about it.
âYes,â she replied in the affirmative.
âWhy?â
âBecause we love each other; thatâs why.â Rosalie looked at him calmly. âMr. Gunner, please let go of my hand!â
Fortunately, it was late at night and the diner was about to close, so nobody else was there. Otherwise, there would be commotion.
âYou love him?â Calvin experienced intense heartache that felt like a sharp sword had pierced his chest, almost causing him to pass out. âBut you promised to stay by my side forever.â
Rosalie scowled and gave Calvin a perplexed look. âI havenât said anything like that.â
âYou did! You once said that you were dispensable. I denied it and said that you are significant to me, so you said you would stay with me forever if possible!â
He cited the conversation they had had before.
It had been the first time he had ever spoken such words to someone else. He had never considered anyone significant to him earlier, not even his parents.
However, he had unintentionally said such words after seeing her defeated expression.
She then smiled, and he had been remembering that smile for years because it was so lovely.
When she said that it would be good to be with him forever, his first thought was that if he were with her, their time together wouldnât be dull.
He wanted to look at her smile every day.
Rosalieâs scowl deepened as she remembered that when she was a kid, she had believed that some people were dispensable. Rosalieâs father remarried, and after Loretta was born, he sent Rosalie to live with her grandma.
Even though Grandma was kind to her, the rest of the family saw her as a burden. Children were always adept at detecting whether others were being kind to them or not.
There was even a time when she believed how wonderful it would have been to join her mother in heaven!
However, she couldnât recall ever telling Calvin these things! Maybe it was simply a coincidence!
âMr. Gunner, Iâve told you that you have mistaken me for someone else,â Rosalie said.
âNo. I havenât mistaken you for someone else!â Calvin was adamant. âRosalie, please donât wed Jonathan, OK? I donât know why you wouldnât acknowledge that weâve met before. Is it because of Jonathan? Or did you really forget about the time we spent together? Iâve been looking for you for so many years. When you were gone, I missed you every dayâ¦â
He murmured and raised his hand, intending to touch her face and tell her how much he missed her and how sorry he was for letting go of her hands at the hospital.
Yet she abruptly turned her head away, leaving his hand in the air.
âMr. Gunner, youâve wrongly taken me for someone else,â Rosalie said. âEven if you havenât, it makes no difference. Jonathan is the guy I love and want to marry. I have no feelings for you.â
Her words caused his blood to seem to instantly freeze, and his entire body to become incredibly stiff.
Rosalie seized the chance to free her arm from his grip. âI hope you wonât come to me for this again in the future, and it makes no difference whether or not I am the person you believe me to be.â
Rosalie turned to look at Amelia and said, âMs. Haab, Iâm leaving now.â
âOkay,â Amelia answered.
Calvin remained motionless like a statue as Rosalie left the diner. He just looked at his empty hand in a daze.
It was empty!
He recalled her words, âIt makes no difference whether or not I am the person you believe me to be.â
Why was this happening? Why! Calvin slowly withdrew his hands and clenched them so hard that his fingernails hurt his palm severely.
Amelia looked at Calvin in shock.
The most famous person in the entertainment industry appeared incredibly depressed and lonely at this precise moment as if he had lost the most priceless treasure and was suddenly overcome with sadness!
âYou know what? I always feel like a dispensable person. It doesnât matter if I disappear from this world one day.â
âNo⦠At least I donât think you are a dispensable person. If it hadnât been for you, I wouldnât have been able to escape, so you are very important to me⦠You will still be important to me in the future.â
âNo one has said this to me other than my mom. Itâll be so wonderful if I can always be by your side.â
âOkay, I can always be by your side.â
Who was it? Who was talking? There seemed to be mist all over the place, obscuring her vision.
All she could see were just two small figures.
Who the hell were they? She wanted to see the two figures clearly, but the more she tried, the more her head hurt.
âAh!â With an exclamation, Rosalie suddenly sat up from the bed. Darkness was all she could see.
Then a voice sounded beside her. âWhatâs wrong? Did you have a nightmare?â
Meanwhile, the lights in the room lit up.
Rosalie turned around in a daze and looked at the person beside her, whose eyes were filled with concern.
âItâs Jon!â she exclaimed inwardly.
âYou look so pale. Did you have any bad dreams?â The familiar feeling of his fingers as they softly brushed her cheek helped her feel a bit more at ease.
She shook her head and said, âNo.â At least, that dream was not a nightmare. It just⦠She slowly lowered her eyes, a strange feeling arising in her heart.
