Morwenna was tired of the veiled criticisms.
She was finished with spoon-feeding Stuart. And really, she couldn't care less about Ms. Gallagher's or anyone else's thoughts.
While setting down her cup with a clink, Morwenna's eyes flashed as she said, âOh, right, I'm not good enough for him, but you are. You act like the lady of the house, so why donât you marry Stuart? Is it because you donât love him?â
Adelaideâs gentle facade froze, and her breathing quickened in anger. âYou...â
Morwenna was genuinely curious.
Norbert had mentioned that Stuart had never married despite his age.
Adelaide acted so much like the lady of the house, but why hadnât she married Stuart?
Adelaideâs demeanor quickly darkened. âYou dare speak to me like that? You know what? I can have you thrown out of Windcharm Villas right now, and Stuart wouldnât utter a word in your defense?â
Morwenna had been ready to leave for a while.
She could still make it to her newly rented apartment to cook lunch.
She nodded briskly. âFine, then, Iâll leave.â
Morwenna returned to her room, gathered her belongings, and headed for the door.
Adelaide was stunned. She had never expected the maid to leave.
She had intended to assert her dominance and intimidate any potential rivals for Stuartâs affection.
She hadnât planned to drive anyone away. She just didn't have the power at Windcharm Villas.
At the time, a cold voice came from the second floor. âWhere do you think youâre going?â
Morwenna turned to see a just-awakened Stuart and waved. âOh, Stuart, youâre awake. Your dear friend has arrived, so Iâll be on my way.â
âCome back here!â
Morwenna paused, puzzled. âWhatâs the matter? Is there anything else?â
At a loss for a valid reason to keep her, Stuart said gruffly, âI havenât had breakfast yet.â
Morwenna replied, âZoe will be here soon. Sheâll make you something.â
âIâm hungry now.â
Hesitant, Morwenna thought it over and then turned back.
Even if she were leaving, it wouldnât hurt to make Stuart one last meal.
She set down her luggage and went to the kitchen.
Adelaide watched Stuart closely. Having stood by this man for seven years, she knew him well. When the maid agreed to stay, she saw a flicker of pleasure in Stuartâs eyes.
Why? Why was that?
She had only been abroad for two weeks. What had happened in her absence?
Why was Stuart treating this maid so differently?
When Morwenna disappeared into the kitchen, Stuart finally turned to Adelaide, his tone indifferent. âWhat brings you here?â
Adelaideâs heart was full of jealousy and anger, but her face showed vulnerability.
âStuart, I didnât mean what I said earlier about driving Ms. Winslet away. I came because I have an appointment at the hospital this afternoon and wanted you to come with me.â
Adelaide finished, her eyes soft and pleading. In the past, Stuart would cancel whatever was on his schedule to take her to the hospital.
However, Stuart glanced toward the kitchen and said, âGet back home. Iâm busy today. Iâll go with you tomorrow.â
âBut...â
Before Adelaide could finish her sentence, Stuart frowned disapprovingly at her.
Immediately, Adelaide lowered her head, adopting a considerate tone, âOkay then, Stuart, off I go.â
As she turned away, the jealousy in Adelaideâs eyes could have cut like a knife.
