Marigold
Finn was true to his word. A few minutes after he left, Gamma Stone knocked on the door, cracking it open and peeking his head through,
âCan I come in?â He asked.
âYes, okay.â I mumbled. Stone entered the room and shut the door securely behind him.
âWell Fox is off to your realm.â Stone said, perching himself on the edge of the bed.
âWhy do you call him that?â I asked, standing on the opposite side of the room.
âWhat, Fox?â Stone asked. I nodded silently.
âOh thatâs just always been his nickname. Nobody calls him Finn unless itâs official Alpha business.â Stone shrugged.
âHow did he get it?â I tried to imagine what would give someone the nickname of Fox.
âItâs his initials, Finn Oxford.â Stone explained.
âOh, I guess that makes sense.â I muttered.
âYou know, he really is a great guy.â Stone said.
âRight, and youâre not biased as his Gamma or anything?â I replied snarkily.
âWell, Iâm also his best friend and brother-in-law so I wear lots of hats.â Stone shrugged again, this time wearing a smerik.
âYouâre his brother-in-law?â I asked, surprised.
âHis twin sister, Ferra, is my mate,â Stone said. I remembered hearing Finn say that name before and wondered why the Gammaâs mate and Alphaâs sister would have anything to do with the pack affairs,
âSheâs also the Beta.â Stone added and I could practically feel my eyes bulging from my head.
âWhat?â
âYeah, Fox didnât think it was fair that he was going to be automatically given the title of Alpha just because he was the male, since he and Ferra were born at the same time. He actually wanted to compete for the rank with her, but Ferra isnât the Alpha type. She doesnât play well with others,â Stone chuckled, thinking about his mate,
âSo, she conceded the title to Fox and he made her his Beta.â
âA female Beta?â I said in awe.
âThis,â Stone gestured his hand around the room,
âIsnât how most packs are run where we come from and itâs absolutely nothing like how our pack is structured.â I was speechless, I didnât know what to say.
âYou would be treated like a Queen in our pack if you came home with Finn.â Stone added. I eyed him skeptically, realizing that he was trying to not so subtly convince me to stay with his Alpha.
âIâm not convinced heâll succeed with my father, anyway.â I said, avoiding Stoneâs unasked question.
âOh, you donât know Fox.â Stone laughed.
âAnd you donât know my father.â I countered,
âThe only thing my father wants more than power is me out of his kingdom. Iâve been with three different wolf packs since I was 13 years old, jumping from Alpha to Alpha as my father found stronger packs to make bargains with.â
âSince you were thirteen?â Stone asked in disgust.
âYeah, since my mother died. Iâve come to terms with my life a long time ago, Gamma Stone. One day Iâll end up becoming the Luna of the most powerful pack my father can find to make a deal with and be the surrogate for a bunch of little fae-wolf hybrid babies.â I explained without emotion.
âThatâs disturbing,â Stone scrunched up his face like he smelt something bad,
âFox wonât let that happen.â
âIâll believe it when I see it.â I shrugged.
âWell Iâm going to manifest positive vibes and pretend like itâs already happened.â Stone grinned and I couldnât help but let a small smile slip onto my face.
âIs it cold in Washington? Iâve heard that itâs cold.â I decided to change the subject.
âYeah itâs pretty cold, but we donât get as much snow as you would think. Itâs either sunny or rainy in Anacortes.â Stone was eager to tell me about his home. He described how the beaches were mostly made of pebbles instead of sand, how there were thick, full woods, and the beautiful Washington Park where they spent a lot of their time with family and friends.
âIt sounds so nice.â I whispered. I couldnât help but picture what it would be like to live somewhere so freeing and peaceful. I had never been to a beach before, sandy or otherwise, and I never had the freedom to explore any parks.
âWhenâs the last time youâve been outside, Luna?â Stone asked me.
âPlease, donât call me that.â I mumbled.
âSorry, Marigoldâ¦.â Stone corrected.
âI donât remember the last time Iâve been outside.â I replied. Stone stood up from the bed and grabbed my hand. I recoiled from his touch, but he wouldnât let me run away.
âLetâs go, then.â Stone grinned, dragging me from the room.
âIâm not allowed!â I protested, trying to pry my hand free.
âYouâre allowed to do whatever you want.â Stone said stubbornly. He pulled me down the hall, right past the other servants and ranked members. I tried to hide my face, making myself as small as possible as I walked beside the Gamma.
âGamma Stone, Iâm not sure about this.â I whispered.
âIf youâre not going to let me call you Luna, then you canât call me Gamma.â Stone complained,
âI promise you, Marigold, youâre safe with me.â Stone said, stopping briefly in the hallway to look me in the eyes as we spoke.
âAlright.â I grumbled.
âWhat are you looking at?â Stone snapped at Beta Collins as we neared the exit.
âWhere are you taking her?â Beta Collins blocked the door.
âOutside for some fresh air.â Stone replied with a look that could kill.
âSheâs not allowed to leave.â Beta Collins crossed his arms over his wide chests.
âWhile sheâs under the protection of Silver Moon, sheâs allowed to do whatever she wants.â Stone argued.
âBeta Collins!â Alpha Torrinâs voice echoed off the walls as he Stoneed towards the door.
âYes, sir?â Beta Collins quickly submitted.
âI told you already, Gamma Stoneâs command is to be honored.â Stone turned his murderous glare on the Alpha and I sunk even further behind his broad frame.
âThe slave isnât supposed to leave.â Beta Collins argued. Stone growled, grabbing Beta Collins by the throat,
âYou will not call her that ever again.â I stepped away from the scene as Alpha Torrin approached Stone. He clapped Stone on the back,
âI apologize for my Betaâs behavior.â Stone dropped Beta Collins on the ground and moved towards me, standing in front of me protectively.
âIâm disgusted by the way you and your pack have treated my Luna.â Stone said.
âOf course, we didnât know she was a Luna.â Alpha Torrin said in a diplomatic voice.
âDoes it matter? Sheâs a person. No one deserves to be treated this way.â
âIt was simply the way things were.â Alpha Torrin shrugged.
âStone, letâs just go.â I pulled on Stoneâs shirt and begged him to take me out of there.
âDonât speak to a ranked member so candidly, girl!â Alpha Torrinâs polite face slipped and I felt the familiar burning sensation against my wrist from the bangle. I whimpered and sunk into myself.
âYou are not to harm the Luna!â Stone roared.
âShe was disrespectful, Gamma Stone, I wonât have that in my pack.â Alpha Torrin said.
âDo you want a war for your pack? Because thatâs what youâre going to get if you command her one more time.â Stone threatened.
Suddenly, I felt a wave of relief over my body. I looked down at the bangle in surprise. Even when Alpha Torrin wasnât ordering me around, the bangle still made its presence known. I gasped in shock as the it broke in half and fell from my wrist, clattering loudly on the ground.
âWhatâs happening?â I whispered.
âNot even fae magic can control a Luna.â Stone grinned, looking down at the broken bangle.
âWhat did you do?â Alpha Torrin accused me.
âNothing!â I cried.
âAlpha Finn must be working his magic over there,â Stone said,
âBesides, a Luna isnât meant to be controlled by someone like you.â
âA womanâs job is to be controlled by an Alpha!â Alpha Torrin began to show Stone his true colors as he realized his bargain with my father was in danger. I could hardly believe it myself.
âWow, just wow.â Stone shook his head. He grabbed my hand and shoved Beta Collins out of the way in a single sweep. He shouldered the heavy door and released us to the cool, foggy air of Ireland.
I gasped in shock, squinting against the brightness. It wasnât sunny persay, just a few beams of sunlight spilling out from the fog, but it was so much brighter than inside the medieval castle. I took a deep breath, breathing in the crisp, fresh air.
âWhat do you think?â Stone asked, letting go of my hand as I wandered down the steps and across the driveway.
âThis is incredible!â I spoke so loudly my voice cracked, having only whispered and mumbled over the last several years trapped inside the packhouse. I untied my apron and let it fall to the ground, freeing myself from the constraints.
âI think thatâs the first time Iâve seen you smile.â Stone appeared at my side.
âIâm sure itâs the first time Iâve smiled since I was thirteen.â I agreed.
âI told you Fox wouldnât let you down.â Stone said, looking at my now empty wrist. There was a deep, raw-looking ring around my wrist where the bangle used to be. It was red and painful, but seeing my otherwise naked wrist was all the pain relief I needed.
âI canât believe itâs actually working.â I sighed. I still felt trapped inside my own body, though; my magic dorment.
âHeâs your mate and heâs not going to let you down.â Stone promised.
âHe should hire you as his hype man, too.â I giggled. Stoneâs face lit up,
âShe laughs!â He yelled loudly into the open air.
âCan we go for a walk?â I asked excitedly.
âOf course, anything you want.â Stone smiled, offering me his arm. Instead of retreating from him, I hooked my hand around his elbow and allowed him to escort me down the driveway.
âYou need a nickname, Marigold is such a mouth full.â Stone commented after a few moments of walking in silence.
âMy mom always called me little flower.â I said softly, blushing as I revealed something personal about myself.
âWell thatâs sweet, but not fit for a Luna.â Stone made a thinking face,
âHow about Mari? Orâ¦ooh, Goldie!â Stoneâs outburst made me jump.
âGoldie? What am I, a dog?â I grumbled. I let go of his arm, feeling like a shaken baby from all his jumping around.
âFine, fine. Mari it is.â Stone said.
âOkay.â I shrugged. I was just happy not being called slave or girl.
