We were moving as fast as we could down the dark tunnels following the old wolf. Even with our werewolf sight visibility was limited. It made Rage uneasy but heightened our other senses. Smell, hearing, touchâ¦
The place reeked of death and decay; its sour stench burned into every fiber of my body as we moved along the neverâending winding catacombs. The slightest sound echoed back to us, every breath sounding like a thousand ghosts followed us, the beating of our hearts was the only evidence of life.
âHow much further, old man?â I tried to keep my voice low, but it still sounded like thunder.
He grunted for me to be quiet. Suddenly he halted.
âThey know were coming.â he said, âBe ready.â So much for the element of surpriseâ¦
It was then that I heard the faint whisper. Someone calling out to me. Every nerveâending on my body came alive as the air around us seemed to be electrified, shimmering with a blueish light. Then I heard it again, her soft voice, calling out my name.
âRaine?â I thought I saw her sweet face for the briefest moment and then it was gone.
âItâs her! Sheâs coming for us. Rage couldnât contain his excitement.
âWhat was that?â I heard Vincent speak right behind me.
âThat was my queen sending me a message that help is coming.â Just the sound of her voice was enough to fill my muscles with renewed strength, like I could conquer the world.
âWeâre going to need it. I hope itâs soon, because here they come.â The old wolf braced himself against the rough wall and his words were hardly cold when we heard a flurry of batwings overhead.
âPush through we need to get into the castle!â shouted to the rest. I knew some of them wouldnât make it, but I couldnât let that stop me from getting to my goal. I transformed into my black wolf,

snapping and snarling, ripping through the vampires as soon as they materialized.

A narrow chasm revealed a
gstone staircase and I barreled towards it. More
bloodsuckers came rushing towards us, poisonous fangs dripping with saliva. Rage sliced a road through them, trampling them under his mighty paws, ripping throats and chests, dismembering
bodies on his way up.
Behind me I heard the others fighting for their lives, but I didnât turn back. I pushed on. Soon I entered a vast, empty hallway and for a moment Rage stood frozen, waiting for the inevitable attack, but when nothing came, he padded on cautiously.
âIf only the devil had a scent.â I told Rage as we went down another corridor, passing through several
doors.
âThis feels like a trap. Rage said and he was hardly ever wrong.
âI see the big, bad wolf has returned.â Out of the darkness the Vampire King emerged, mist swirling at his feet. At his command all the doors leading out of the room we were in slammed shut.
âYou are so predictable, Athan.â I had turned back to my human form to face my enemy. Only he wasnât alone. More of the leeches appeared out of the shadows. They were just waiting for the order from their master to attack.
âHave you come to save your little wolves? Such a shame, I was getting fond of them.â He grinned maliciously. âSpeaking of fondness⦠How is my dear queen?â He licked his lips suggestively, âSo delicious, I can still taste her.â
Of course, he was goading me and succeeded at getting my blood boiling. âShut your filthy mouth, Bloodsucker!â I snarled before I could stop myself. Rage clawed at my skin to be let out. âNot now. Not yet.â I told him.
âDid I touch a nerve, Amaris?â He moved around, seeming to float on the mist that surrounded his legs. âMust be hell to wonder if the girl you loved betrayed you.â His voice sounded next to my right ear, and I wheeled around only to find him more than an armâs length away to my left.
âCut the crap, Athan. What is it you want?â I wasnât in the mood for his theatrics.

He looked at me like I was an idiot. âYou know what I want, Amaris. I want Raine.â There was no trace of sarcasm on his face or his tone. âGive her to me and you can have your wretched wolves.â
I chose to ignore his ridiculous request. âDid my brother put you up to this?â I would enjoy ripping Athanâs undead heart out of his bony chest and then I would deal with my treacherous brother.
âNow why would you think that Amaris?â He stroked his long fingers over his pointed chin. âAlthough, I do like him more than you. Heâs much more⦠accommodating.â
âWhat you want to say is, he is easily manipulated.â
âWellâ¦â he spread his hands to the side, shrugging his narrow shoulders.
âI am not him and I will purge you from the earth, Athan.â That was a promise.
âYouâre so sure of yourself, Werewolf King. Right now, your wolves are being slaughtered like the dogs they are.â
âYou would like to think that, wouldnât you?â I smirked at him, âShows you how much you know about our kind.â I moved closer to him. âNothing will stop them for getting the females back.â
He sighed, âIâll give you credit for that. Your she wolves are one of your greatest weaknesses. I mean, just look at you, willing to die for a pretty face. You have no idea what she is, do you, Amaris Black. S
She will be the death of you. Didnât you get my message when I sent you the black roses?â
The black roses, the funeral march. He did that. âYou talk a great deal. Mostly bullshit. Raine is my soulmate.â
âSee, I beg to differ. She belongs here. With me.â
âHe talks
too much. Time to die.â Rage roared in my mind, pushing at my boundaries. I lunged at him with claws extended but he jumped back in time. I missed.
His minions hissed at me, forming a protective circle around him. It was laughable.
âYouâre a coward, Athan. Why donât you face me, monster to monster?â His eyes glowed red in his pale
face and his whole demeanor changed. Guess I had hit a nerve.

He waved his hands and his undead cronies dispersed into the dusky crevices from where they came.
He seemed to grow in size as he approached. With a flourish he discarded the cape from his head and shoulders, revealing silver hair curling onto his collar. He had a silver dagger on his belt.
âYou are no match for me, Wolf. I am more than a thousand years old. You are but a speck of dust in comparison.â
âYour arrogance is astonishing, Leech. And still, you carry an arm. Are you scared?â I chuckled sardonically.
He threw the dagger down. âA mere decoration.â He opened up his arms as if to welcome me into his embrace. âHave at it, Wolf.â
