Painfully slowly, I reached the ground. I needed to distance myself from the dark castle as quickly as I could. Athan would send his minions to search for my body, no doubt. At the edge of the dark realm there had to be a way out. I tried linking Richard and the other warriors but receiving no reply I had to assume that they hadnât survived. There was no time for guilt. They knew what they signed up for serving me. I had to get back to Raine. Find out for myself if what she said was true.
What if Athan told the truth, that thought nagged at the back of my mind. If he defiled my mate, wouldnât I have felt it? Isnât that how the mate bond worked? I pushed the doubts to the
back of my mind. I had to focus, get back to my kingdom. It was enough to know she was safe. Ross would see to it.
I looked up at the towering black castle looming in the background.
âThis isnât over, Athan. I will be back, and I will destroy you.â I whispered a promise into the misty air.
âDamn this infernal mist!â It felt as if I was going around in circles. âWake up, Rage! Damn you, I need you.â He would find his way out of this miserable dead place much better than I could in human form. Moving through the petrified forest, the branches of the dead trees reaching out with their gnarled arms to scratch at my naked body as if to draw the lifeforce out, I stopped in my tracks sensing something. Something alive. Something with a feint scent.
âRage GET UP!â I screamed at the beast and at last he opened one red eye to glare at me.
âIâve spent my power healing you, foolish human!â Now was not the time to get an attitude needed him.
with me. I
âWell, get your shit together! Weâre not alone.â I tried to see through the depressing mist that kept on rolling in from the black sea.
âAs you wishâ¦â I felt him push through, making my transformation as painful as possible, spiteful wolf!

â !â He was deliberately hurting me, pissed off that I let our mate go with Ross. What other choice
did I have though?

Excruciating minutes later the black wolf shook his thick fur and stood growling, head lowered, staring
into the mists. Shapes moving through the dusk, drawing nearer. We waited.
There were five of them. Werewolves. Two females and three males. I didnât know what to make of
them. Rage stood his ground until they came within attacking distance.
âWho are you?â The largest male confronted my wolf. âTurn back so we can talk.â
Rage regarded them with suspicion. âI donât trust them. What are they doing here?â
âLet me worry about that.â I told him and pushed him back.
âWe canât stay here. Follow us.â One of the females lifted her head to sniff the air. âVamps are coming.â
The five of them slunk in between the dead trees and I had no choice but to follow them. Rage wasnât happy about it. They ran until they came to a small opening between two rocky outcrops and slipped inside it.
âHurry!â the female urged and once again I followed. We went down into a cavern and one of the males stayed behind to wipe away our tracks.
âTheyâre looking for you.â The larger male didnât seem too pleased about coming across me.
âWhose to say. They could be looking for you.â I countered, they have yet to tell me what they were doing in the Vampire Realm.
âWho are you?â he demanded. He was no Alpha,
âAmaris. How did you get here?â
wa Gamma or a Delta.
âAmaris? As in King Amaris Black?!â the other older female snarled at me. As she said those words the malesâ attitude became aggressive, their wolves pushing to the surface.
âThere seems to be a misunderstandingâ¦â I could take them, but I needed their help.

âOh, I donât think so! You sold us out to the vampires!â the larger maleâs voice was now guttural as his animal side fought for dominance.
I sighed. I was hoping for a peaceful negotiation. However, ⦠I let them experience the full force of my
Alpha King aura and forced them into submission. The females were the first to fall.
âLet me make this clear⦠I have no intention of killing or selling my subjects to vampires. I donât know who is behind all this, but I will find out and they will pay the ultimate price.â Although I had a damni good idea.
âHow can we believe you?â He knelt on the ground with his head bent, but still trying to resist my force. The others two males werenât resisting at all.
I snorted, âYou donât have a choice. Now tell me what the hell are you doing here?â
The eldest of the females raised her face. âI am Nola of the former Sand Wolves. We were a small pack on the west coast. Then your men came andâ¦â
âAgain, I never gave such an order.â I interrupted her, scanning her ragged clothes covering her malnourished bones. I wondered how she managed to escape the castle, she hardly looked able to fend off a pup.
âVincent.â The large male introduced himself, âThese two are Adolf and Ben. We were of the same pack, also a small group at the edge of the forest. Our Alpha and Luna were both killed, and we were rounded up like dogs.â He did not mask the bitterness in his voice.
âAnd I am Serene. I am of a different pack than theirs. I donât know where the rest of my pack is. They took everyone.â She was the youngest of the five of them. Pretty if it werenât for the scar marring the entire left side of her face. She too was underfed, scrawny even. The men werenât much better.
âAre there more of you?â This was a complication. I couldnât leave them behind. They were my subjects and I had an obligation to them.
âYes, kept like animals in the castle. They use them as blood bags and entertainment.â Vincent spat on the ground, times they would let us fight each other. To the death.â
âThe winner gets released to be hunted.â Ben uttered a derisive snort. âSo, Your Majesty, you can say

âThey donât usually chase us right away. They give us a head start, because they know there is no escape.â Selene said.
âThere has to be a way.â A plan was forming in my mind, much to Rageâs dismay. If we could release the captives, we could fight our way out. I looked at the bunch of wretched werewolves. They werenât warriors, but they were all I had. âWe have to free them.â
