Rage pushed for control, but I couldnât let him out yet while Athan held Raineâs life in his hands. She was losing blood fast, her pace becoming paler by the minute. I needed to keep him focused on me. âIâll give you whatever you want, just save her.â
Out of my peripheral vision I saw Ross signaling to my warriors to move aside. The portal shimmered and seemed to be getting smaller. We were running out of time.
âWhatever I want?â Athan sneered at me. His vile hand cupped one of her breasts through the thin scrap of a robe she wore. For that insolence I would bite off that same hand.
Rage snarled and snapped his jaws furiously, his red eyes burned, glaring at the vampire king with the promise of death. I assured him it would happen soon.
âI want you to reject her, break your bond.â Athan said as he licked the blood from her neck. I saw the wound starting to close.
There was no way I was about to do that. Raineâs eyes flew open to look at me and the shock and hurt I saw in them gripped my heart in an iron fist. Did she really think I would do that?
Ross inched closer to Athan. But the vampire was quick to retaliate.
âBack off or I will snap her neck!â He hissed at Ross, who held his hands up in surrender. I heard Raineâs sharp intake of breath as Athan increased the pressure, bending her neck back at an impossible angle.
âThis will end badly for you if you hurt the queen.â Ross tried to hold his attention. âLetâs come to an amicable agreement.â
âNo, this is what I want!â hissed the evil leech, âShe belongs to me. She is carrying my offspring!â
Say what? Shock froze my legs to the floor. Raine shook her head in denial.
âYouâre lying! Amaris, donât believe him.â She was crying, struggling to free herself from the vampireâs

clutches.
His hand moved to her belly and bile rose to my throat. âOh, but I am not lying, my dear. I told you; you were carrying the royal heir.â He fixed his pale eyes on me, birthmark on the inside of her left thigh, tell me Iâm wrong.â

âNo, no, it isnât true. Amaris, Iâm pregnant with your pup.â Her golden eyes begged me to believe her. Raine would never betray me like that.

I knew what I had to do. At the same time my wolf ripped through my flesh, the door burst open to a
.Stream of vampires. Rage launched himself at Athan and he lost his grip on Raine. She fell into Rossâ
arms.
âGo! Go now!â I yelled at him through the mind link.
He had no choice but to obey. The last I saw before the two of them disappeared into the portal, was Raineâs stricken face and her hands reaching for me as she screamed my name.
Athan was much stronger than he looked. Rageâs teeth snapped inches away from Athanâs face, narrowly missing taking a chunk out of his nose. He had a chokehold on Rageâs broad neck as they slammed into the stone wall.
âI had her countless times, Amaris.â He goaded me and my anger fueled my wolf. He foamed at the mouth, pure fury, tearing into Athanâs shoulder.
The vampire roared in pain, and it was sweet music to my ears. Rage hardly felt the blows Athan dealt him. Rip, tear, kill was the mantra repeated in his mind.
I became aware of my warrior wolves bravely fighting off the vampires coming to their kingâs aid. The air was laden with the stench of blood and death. Screeching, howling, snarling, all the sounds merged together into a cacophonous orchestra. They kept on coming, more and more of them. Too manyâ¦
Athan managed to kick Rage away from him. The force sent him careening into the fray and a horde of bloodsuckers eager to rip into him. Richardâs brown wolf rushed to my side to help.
âWe wonât surrender, your Majesty!â He slashed his way through the vampires to get to my black wolf.
But it wasnât lood. How long would we be able to last?

âYou wonât win this fight, Amaris. Youâre outnumbered.â Athan crouched by the window, torn and bloodied but healing fast.
Damn that witch! If only she could have held that damnable portal. There was only one way out now. With a deafening roar Rage jumped forward and barreled into Athanâs body. Our combined weight smashed into the window, and it exploded outward taking our bodies with it into the swirling mists below.
The wind whistled past our tumbling bodies, down, down we went, spiraling out of control. Rage had his jaws clamped down onto Athanâs arm, biting down to the bone. If I were to die, he would go with me. At least my mate was safe.
âStupid wolf!â He raked his sharp nails across Rageâs sensitive nose, but he held fast.
Then I saw the vicious, jagged rocks waiting to impale us looming out of the dusk. Unable to control the speed with which we were hurtling towards certain death, Rage braced himself for the impact, hoping Athanâs body would lessen the impact.
But the vampire had a trick up his sleeve. The last thing we heard was Athanâs eerie laughter as he disappeared underneath Rage in a flurry of flapping batwings. Rage hit the rocks with a sickening crunch that I felt right through to my bones.
Pain, mindânumbing pain racked my body. I drifted in and out of consciousness, barely aware of my surroundings. The only thing I knew for certain was that I was still alive. I had a lucky break, missing the sharp, stakeâlike rocks. But on the downside, I was wedged in between two pills from a large gash in my side.
of rock and bleeding
Biting down hard I tried to free myself from my precarious position. Far below me black water sloshed onto the rocks. These were sharkâinfested waters, and I had no intention of becoming, fish food, but I had to get out of this place before the bloodsuckers hunted me down.
My muscles shook from the effort it took to move my broken body to a safer place. I couldnât shift into
my wolf form to heal faster, because then I would certainly end up in the water. Slowly, painfully my ribs realigned themselves. I popped my left shoulder back into its socket and began the descent, not knowing what perils awaited me there.
