Chapter 111
RAINE
A few hours earlier
Amaris and Ross sped away to join the fight below. Part of me wanted them to stay, fearing my powers would give out.
âWe wonât be able to hold them off much longer, Your Majesty. Weâre draining our magic.â Joyce groaned next to me, her expression strained.
Those were the words I didnât want to hear. But she was right. Already, I could feel the forceâfield weakening. And still, the dragon shifters kept coming. I had no other weapon.
â â¦â The white light shimmered and faded out, and my shaking hands fell to my side.
âYou need to rest, Raine!â
With lightningâfast reflexes, Joanna pushed me aside just as the dragon shifter transformed midâair and prepared to land on the rampart. Pippa blasted him off the wall with her air magic. His panicked scream followed him down to the rocks.
âWe must get you somewhere safe.â Joyce
ugged on my arm.
âNo! No, I wonât leave you here alone.â I couldnât abandon them when they were all exhausted. âIâll be fine. Just give me a few minutes.â I sagged down with my back against the wall.
Willa scoffed, âGuess youâre not so special after all.â
âDo you want to die?â Pippa turned on her. âWeâre all in this together. Get over yourself!â
Joanna frowned at Willa. âI donât know what your problem is, Willa, but Pippa is right. We must work together or none of us will survive.â
Willa clicked her tongue at Joanna. âFine. Whatever.â She shook her blue hair over her shoulder. âHeads up!â her hands shot out and shards of ice emerged from her palms. With a primal cry, she threw the shards at the attacking dragon shifter, impaling and blinding both eyes. The creature howled, grabbing at the projectiles. It crashed into the tower, spinning, tumbling to the ground. Joyce sprang onto its back and slashed his throat with her dagger.
âLetâs move, ladies! There will be more coming!â Joyce cried out. âGet the Magus to safety.â
The seven witches formed a circle around me, holding hands, and began chanting to open a portal when a mighty crash shook the castle. Unable to keep our balance, we fell down in a tangle of limbs.
âWhat the hell was that?â I struggled to my feet.

We rushed over to the opposite side of the rampart in time to see the northern wing exploding as a monstrous dragon tore through the building like it was made of paper.
âShit! That is the Dragon Lord and his pet.â Joyce yelled close to my ear.
I recognized the beast from when we fled through the portal and I scanned the sky, expecting to see Sorin and Helen nearby. But there was no sign of them. Yet.
âRaine!â Amaris called me through the link. The concern in his voice was unmistakable.
âWeâre fine!â I called back. If he knew I had exhausted my power, he would rush back up here. So I didnât tell him. I peered over the wall for a glimpse of him. All I saw was dust and rubble. A cheer went up from below. The dragon shifters hailed their Lord.
My heart beat out of my chest with anxiety. Amaris! Would he be strong enough to defeat the Dragon Lord? I need to be with my mate. Damn it! I still felt so dizzy and weak.
âJoanna? How long will it take for my power to reset? I must help Amaris.â I clutched her hand, desperately looking for answers in her emerald eyes..
âAmaris, Amaris!â Willa rolled her eyes at me. âYou donât give a ratâs ass about us. We need to get the hell out of here.â
âShut up, Willa!â I snapped at her and immediately felt that tingle deep down in my stomach. Well, if anger fueled my power, then I needed to get my rage on. âYouâre nothing but a spiteful, jealous little bitch!â I squared my shoulders, jutting my chin out at her.
Gasps of shock from the others didnât deter me. I focused on the anger I felt, thinking of all the bullies in my life and how that made me feel.
âYou think Iâm afraid of you, wolf girl?â she laughed in my face. She had no intention of backing off.
Which was fine by me. Tasha egged me on/âThe bitch is cruising for a bruising.â
âBy the Goddess! This is not the time.â Joanna threw her hands in the air.
âYour Majesty!â Ross burst in through the side door. He was out of breath and covered in blood and gore. The sight of him snapped me out of my wrath. Thankfully, most of it wasnât his own.
âRoss? You should be at Amarisâ side!â I shoved Willa away from me to run to Ross.
âHe sent me to protect you, Raine: You know I will protect you with my life, Your Majesty.â As he moved a wisp of my hair behind my ear, I couldnât help but notice the way his eyes lingered on my face. It felt wrong to have him stare at me like that, and I turned my
face away.
Joyce cleared her throat and placed herself between us. âWe can take her back to the fortress. She belongs there.â
âWhat?â Ross glared at the redâhaired witch. âNo!â

âWeâre all vulnerable at the moment. She is exhausted.â Joanna chimed in.
âDonât I get a say in this?!â I yelled at them, and the tingles intensified. Good. That was good. âI can never leave my king!â
âIncoming!â a witch yelled.
Ross jumped forward, turning into his brown wolf, launching himself at the dragon, jaws agape. Fearless, he crashed into the creature, latching onto its neck, ripping and tearing into the leathery flesh. Both of them crashed to the floor, sending shockwaves rippling through the building.
âNow! We have to do it now!â Joyce screamed. The witches formed their circle again with myself in the middle while Ross attacked the dragon.
I watched horrified as the dragon swung his mighty neck with Ross attached to it, slamming his body against the wall. He uttered a yelp and my heart contracted.
âNo! We canât leave him.â Breaking free from them, I faced the dragon. Ross lay stunned a few feet away. It opened its mouth to growl at me. Rows and rows of sharp teeth came into play.
âRaine!â I heard the witches shout. âGet away from it.â
I saw it gather itself on muscled hind legs, ready to jump at me. âNot todayâ¦â
As the power surged through my veins, my fingertips glowed with an intense energy that engulfed the dragon. I envisioned how every bone in the creatureâs body crumbled and turned to dust as I twisted my hands, imagining it was my hands doing the action.
It took mere seconds for the massive creature to implode before our eyes. Spent, I collapsed to the floor, hardly able to lift my head. The cold stone floor felt like heaven beneath my burning hands.
âWhat happened?â I heard Rossâ voice.
âShe damned near killed herself to save you, wolf!â Joyce snapped at Ross.
âI had it under control,â he growled back at her. âRaine, you shouldnât have done that,â he said, bending over me to help me to my feet.
âYouâre welcome.â I smirked at him. My knees buckled underneath me and I clutched at his bare chest for support.
âOh, for sakeâ¦â I heard Willa mutter.
The witches were gawking at us, but more so at Rossâ ample length. Suddenly conscious of being so close to a naked Ross, I pushed away from him.
âWhat the heck is that?â Pippa alerted us. âWhy is it getting dark so quickly?â She pointed at the horizon in the east.
She was right. Dark clouds were coming in fast. It wasnât even dusk yet. Could it be the Shadow

Dragons?
âShadow Dragons!â Joanna whispered, her face pale.
âWell, now weâre .â Willa glared at me, âNice work, Magus. Youâve broken yourself for this.â She looked Ross up and down with disgust.
I was too tired to bother answering. Ross uttered a warning growl, baring his teeth at the blue- haired witch. She rolled her eyes but backed off.
âCome on! Get back inside. Iâll take you all down to the dungeons. Youâll be safe there.â Ross dragged me along with him. I resisted. âOnly until you get your powers back.â
I had no choice but to agree. Before we could take the stairs, a mighty force sent Ross flying backward, taking me with him. My head collided with the stone wall, knocking me senseless. Dark mist rolled in over the floor, suffocating and cold. Cold like the dead. It could only mean one thing. Athan was here.
âThere you are, my beauty.â I heard his voice right next to me. Or was it in my head?
I wanted to scream, but no sound left my lips. Where was Ross? Where was my coven?
