Chapter 223
âDr. Quinn, can I get discharged? Iâm totally fine now!â Millie grabbed Laineyâs sleeve and begged pitifully to be discharged when Lainey dropped by to visit.
Lainey flipped through Millieâs checkup record and said lazily, âIt wasnât me. It was Dr. Lloyd who wouldnât release you. I donât have a say.â
âUgh!â Millie slumped onto the bed and pouted at Lainey. âI want to get back to work. Iâm very passionate about my job. Dr. Quinn, do you get me?â
Lainey grinned at her. How would Millie love her job when she had to work overtime and get criticized whenever she accompanied Lainey to surgery?
Lainey patted her on the head. âFine. Iâll talk to Dr. Lloyd.â
Millie immediately transformed into an obedient child. She asked, âCan I visit Cara?â
Lainey nodded. âOf course.â
Millie quickly changed into her shoes and followed Lainey to Caraâs room. As Cara remained in critical condition, she was warded in the ICU.
Warren might have stabbed Cara in the abdomen, which wasnât supposed to be fatal, but the knife plunged deep into her body. Worse, he even pulled the knife out afterward.
Staring at the feeble Cara in bed, Millie was transported to the moment Cara shielded her from Warrenâs attack. How could a vulnerable woman like Cara exhibit such courage in moments of danger?
That reminded Millie of herself, who had followed the kidnappers for Winstonâs sake, even though she
was afraid of pain.
She had grown up sheltered and pampered, but she didnât make a sound even when the kidnappers stabbed her in the back and threw her into the ocean. All she could think about was Winston, and she prayed that he stayed alive.
Millie saw herself in Cara. Having suffered a failed marriage, she didnât want Cara to sustain any losses again. She had to make sure that Cara recovered fully.
Therefore, she offered, âDr. Quinn, Iâll foot Caraâs medical bill.â
Nodding, Lainey said, âGot it. We will perform the cardiac surgery on her when her condition has stabilized.â
Millieâs ringing phone interrupted the conversation. She answered the call. Someone began, âHi, Ms. Caldwell. This is the Yerwick City Police Department.â
Her eyes lit up. After a lengthy conversation, she hung up.
Puzzled, Lainey asked, âWhat happened?â
âThe police said that Kane Olsen might be sentenced for assault.â Millie cast a look at Lainey with mixed feelings.
âGreat. He deserves that. Once he is behind bars, no one will be interfering with Caraâs treatment anymore. Laineyâs serious face softened into a smile. âLooks like the Grim Reaper isnât after him yet. Oh, well. This

is fate!â

The two doctors stared at Cara, who was lying in the bed. Laineyâs statement about fate echoed in Millieâs ears, reminding her of her multiple attempts to divorce Winston.
Each attempt was more distressing than before, as though some higher power was interfering in their marriage. Was it fate that prevented them from getting a divorce?
At that moment, Cara moved her finger. Lainey gasped in joy, âSheâs awake!â
Millie took a few steps toward Cara while Lainey rushed out to call for her attending physician.
Millie watched as Cara slowly opened her eyes. Cara moved her fingers once more and flashed a faint smile when she recognized Millie.
She returned the smile. At last, she and Cara had escaped death.
âCara, please have a good rest.â
Cara nodded feebly. All she could see was Millie, her salvation and light in her terrible life. She kept telling herself to stay strong and stay alive.
And she would.
That night, Millie heard someone knocking on her door when she was playing mobile games in her bed.
