Chapter 22
Millie arrived at Purple Aster Restaurant for her blind date the next evening.
Millie crossed her arms over her chest. She stood before the window and gazed at the scenery. She wore a sexy white oneâshoulder dress.
âMs: Caldwell?â A manâs voice rang out from behind. It sounded a little familiar.
Millieâs eyes rounded when she turned and saw who it was. Shock filled her face as she asked, âMr. Harrison?â
She couldnât believe her blind date was Simon Harrison. It
as 10 wonder Terrence got all emotional the other night when she told him she had saved Patrickâs life.
Simonâs lips curved into a soft smile as he carried himself with gentleness and elegance. âYep, itâs me.â
He politely pulled out Millieâs chair before motioning her to sit.
Millieâs shocked gaze remained on him.
âAre you that surprised?â Simon shifted nervously upon being stared at by her. He was a little older than Millie, so the latter was still a young lady in his eyes.
Now that he saw her up close, he realized she was indeed beautiful.
Millie always had a bright complexion. Her white dress only made her skin glow more. It was to the point where one couldnât keep their eyes off her.
Simon was already impressed with her that night at the banquet. That said, he never imagined sheâd take his breath away even more today.
Millie smiled, nodded, and asked, âIndeed, I am. Howâs your father?
âThanks to you, my fatherâs doing well now. Iâve been so
preoccupied that I never kept my word about visiting and expressing our gratitude to you. Please forgive me.â Simon was elegant as he took his time to enunciate each word.
Millie felt like a lowly person when facing his gracefulness. With a slight smile, she replied, âThereâs no need for such formalities. Iâm happy to know your father is well.â
âShould we order now?â Simon asked.
âYes.â Millie nodded.
Simon then called a waiter over and handed the menu to Millie.
Later, when they were dining, Millie abruptly spoke up. âMr. Harrison, I wonât beat around the bush since weâre already acquainted. Truth is, mine and Winstonâs divorce hasnât been finalized yet.â
âI heard about it.â Simon nodded like he didnât mind it.
âYouâre a good person, and youâre someone Iâm unworthy of. Letâs consider today as a meal between friends. You donât have to take the blind date seriously.â Millie believed that one shouldnât harm those they were acquainted with.
Simon stiffened. âAre you only saying Iâm a good person to let me down nicely?â
Millie immediately clarified, âNo, I swear youâre an excellent man.â
A light laugh came from Simon. âOh? Is there anyone in this world you find unworthy? You neednât be so polite. Iâm taking tonightâs dinner date seriously.â
Millie was at a loss upon seeing how serious the former was.
That was when Simon cut to the chase. âIâm against blind dates. The reason Iâve shown up today is because youâre my blind date.â
âIs it because I saved your father?â Millie instinctively voiced.
Simon shook his head at once. âNo, Iâm here because I admire you.â
Millie shrugged, not knowing what was there to admire about her. Not to mention, sheâd be a woman with a marriage history after divorcing Winston.
âMills?â Someone called out to Millie then.
Millie looked up and saw Joanna, who linked arms with Winston.
Winston wasnât wearing a suit today. Instead, he wore an outfit he used to wear back in college. It was a sweatshirt and sweatpants combination, which was casual and youthful.
On the other hand, Joanna donned a pink dress. She looked beautiful as she stood beside Winston. The two were a perfect match.
âSo, it really is you, Mills! I thought Iâd mistaken you for someone. else.â Joannaâs eyes curved in delight before she looked at Simon.â Oh! Youâre here, too, Mr. Harrison.â
âMr. Greer, Ms. Lowell.â Simon stood and politely greeted the two.
Winston nodded slightly in response.
âWhat are you guys doing here?â Joanna asked Simon.
Simon glanced at Winston, then back at Millie. It was as if he were asking Millie whether she minded him telling the truth.
Millie was grateful that Simon cared about her feelings.
She nodded.
Winston felt displeased as he watched the two exchange looks.
A moment later, Simon revealed, âWeâre on a blind date.â
Winstonâs dark, hostile gaze snapped toward Simon as he questioned, âA blind date?â
Millie sipped her red wine without paying Winston any attention. Even so, she could still sense his fiery stares coming her way.
âYou two?â Winstonâs eyes narrowed to slits.
Simon answered, âYeah.â
Barely detectable, complicated emotions flickered in Winstonâs eyes.
Joanna couldnât help remarking, âMills! How could you go on a blind date when you and Winston havenât even gotten divorced?â
Millie raised her head after hearing that. She fixed her gaze on Joanna while speaking hoarsely. âOh, so youâre aware he and I havenât gotten divorced yet, huh?â
Joanna was speechless upon being questioned like that.
What Millie said was equivalent to saying, âWhy do you keep hanging out with my husband like youâre a couple if you know he and I arenât divorced yet?â
âLâ¦â Joannaâs lips parted as she frowned pitifully at Winston.
Winston immediately pulled Joanna to his side and defended her. â You donât have to be so mean, Millie. Joâs question was harmless and didnât mean anything!â
Millie took in how he defended Joanna, and her heart grew bitter. She had merely responded to Joanna, yet Winston pulled Joanna behind him protectively. Was he afraid sheâd do something to Joanna, whom he adored?
That was when Simon spoke up. âMr. Greer, Ms. Caldwell didnât mean anything either. She was only stating facts.â

Winstonâs attention shifted to Simon as he wondered, âWhatâs his deal? Doesnât he know Millieâs my woman? How dare he go on a blind date with her before mine and Millieâs divorce is finalized? Now, heâs even defending Millie to my face! Is he trying to challenge me?â
His gaze swept toward Millie, and he spoke blandly. âYouâve got quite the charm, Ms. Caldwell. Youâve just asked to divorce me, yet you already have a new knight in shining armor now.â
Millie frowned, wondering why Winston was being so resentful. He was allowed to have Joanna as his other woman during his and Millieâs marriage. If that was the case, why wasnât Millie allowed to go on a blind date?
Winston looked at Simon again and smirked. âCan the famed Harrison family even accept a woman whoâs had a past marriage into their family?â
Simon stepped forward. He was about to refute Winston when Millie interrupted him.
Millie smiled and spoke in a composed demeanor. âWhy should I be judged by others if even Ms. Lowell can be with a previously married man?â
All warmth left Winstonâs face in that instant. He couldnât believe she had called him a previously married man.
Simon couldnât help but snort with laughter. He agreed with what Millie said. After all, if Millie was a previously married person, wouldnât the same apply to Winston?
Millieâs gaze flickered to Joanna. Then, she cocked a brow and questioned, âMs. Lowell, do you mind that Mr. Greer has a marriage history?â
Joannaâs grip tightened around Winstonâs arm. Naturally, she didnât

care about that.
She couldnât care less about how many marriages Winston had been in. All that mattered was he ultimately belonged to her. Sheâd be okay with anything.
Winstonâs expression had darkened like a terrifying storm.
Millie shot him a vicious glare. Thrill coursed through her body now that she had gotten even with them.
Joanna could tell the atmosphere was off, so she tried to smooth things at once. âMr. Harrison and Mills look pretty good together. Itâd be a happy ending if they got together, right, Win?â
Winston raised his head to meet Millieâs eyes. He mused, âMillie and Simon? A happy ending?â
