Chapter 20
Winstonâs brows twisted into a frown. He gazed calmly at Millie as if he agreed that she was a shameless and manipulative woman.
Anger and bitterness brewed deep within Millie.
She no longer cared what Winston thought of her. Still, she felt like a fool because the latter kept questioning her. With a bitter smile, she snarled, âWhy donât we just tell your grandma about our divorce if you think Iâm that despicable?â
âYou wouldnât dare!â Winston stomped forward.
He could tell from Selmaâs actions that she cared a lot about Winston and Millieâs marriage. It would only cause Selma more trouble if they told her they wanted to get divorced now. Winston refused to make any mistakes before Selmaâs birthday celebration.
Millie chuckled. âWhy wouldnât I dare? Winston, get one thing clear. Selma is your biological grandmother, not mine!â
She had only refrained from telling Selma about it because Selma treated her well. Millie didnât want Selma to fall ill if she told the
latter about the divorce. It wasnât because Millie was reluctant to
part with her rotten marriage.
âI, your exâwife, am playing along and making your grandma happy. You should be grateful instead of questioning me! Got it?â Millie glowered at him.
When she loved Winston, it was like she was seeing things through roseâcolored glasses. She would never blame him, no matter how much he hurt her. Now that she no longer loved him, she struggled to like anything about him.
Her words sparked fury in Winston, who had long gotten used to her former, more obedient self. These days, she had a more spiky

personality, which upset Winston greatly.
Winston stepped ahead, shot her a death glare, and interrogated her. âDoes that mean I should thank you?â
âShouldnât you thank me?â Millie raised her chin to glare back at him.
After all, Winston couldnât do anything if she wanted to be selfish and cut ties for good by telling Selma about their divorce.
Winston grabbed Millieâs grist, his gaze intensifying as he spoke with a low but firm voice. âListen up, Millie. Drop the matter regarding our divorce for now. Weâll discuss it after Grandmaâs birthday celebration. If you dare tell her about it beforehand, youâll bear the consequences alone!â
Millie flung Winstonâs hand off her, then scoffed. âMr. Greer, why are you being so arrogant when asking me for help with something?â
Winston sneered after seeing Millieâs detached and emotionless expression. He realized that this was the real Millie; she was sharp- tongued and cruel.
Back then, he used to feel slight pity for her. Whenever Joanna got in trouble, heâd question how it was possible for someone as gentle as Millie to pull off so many schemes against Joanna. However, he realized now that executing those vile schemes was no big deal for Millie.
Winstonâs eyes narrowed to slits as he stared her down. âWhat do you want?â
Millie faced him, thinking it was the first time she had a say between them. As for what she wanted, she voiced it straightforwardly. â Winston, letâs go to-â
She wanted to say, âLetâs go to the beach together for once.â
Alas, Winstonâs phone rang just then.

She recalled Winston had specifically chosen this ringtone for Joannaâs calls.
Winston raised his phone, glanced at Millie, and answered the call.
âWin, my car got hit. Please hurry overâ¦â Joanna sobbed with a trembling voice on the other end of the call.
Concern filled Winstonâs expression as he soothed her, âDonât be afraid, Jo. Wait there for me. Iâll be right over.â
Millieâs eyes stung as she listened to their conversation.
Winston hung up before returning his attention to Millie. Then, he spoke with urgency, as if he were in a rush and only putting up with her antics so he could leave sooner. âIâll give you whatever you want as long as you keep Grandma happy.â
After that, he hopped into his car and left.
Millie scoffed at herself while watching him drive away. She had always wanted Winston to go to the beach with her once when she first married him. Yet, he always refused.
Now, she wanted to visit the beach to end the chapters of her youth, but her wish still seemed impossible.
Millieâs family waited for her on the couch when she returned home that night.
She obediently stood before them, awaiting their judgment.
âGrandpa, this lucky charm doesnât workâ¦â Millie mumbled while placing the charm on the coffee table.
That baffled Arthur. He wondered how that was possible when it
cost hi.
Layla could tell Millie failed to proceed with the divorce from the latterâs words. She stomped upstairs at once, and anyone could tell from her demeanor that she was furious.
âGrandmaâ¦â Millie felt aggrieved. She wanted to divorce Winston, but it wasnât her fault that an accident occurred.
âGosh, I told you sheâd go soft!â Julia shook her head before leading Terrence upstairs and telling him, âWhy donât we research and see if we can have another child? We canât seem to get through to our current one, after all!â
Millie was briefly speechless but soon snapped, âMom, thatâs out of line! How could you think that way?â
She looked ahead to Arthur, who was the last to speak. With a pout, she hugged his arm and whined, âGrandpaâ¦â
Arthur didnât ask why she failed to get a divorce. Instead, he asked, Have you heard the latest news? Itâs got Yerwickâs citizens all over the place.â
âWhat?â Millie was confused.
âEveryoneâs been looking for a topâquality medicinal herb called Snowdrop. They want to give a rare birthday gift to Mrs. Greer Senior.â
Millie was puzzled, thinking, âHow is it that even Grandpa knows about Snowdrop? Just how many people are looking for it?â
She couldnât understand the craze and asked, âHas everyone lost their mind? Itâs nothing but a herb.â
âYouâre wrong. Itâs not only a herb. Itâll create a good chance for you to win over the Greer family more! Iâll let you in on a secret but shocking news,â said Arthur.
Millieâs eyes widened at him with intrigue.
âThe Lowell family is the most desperate to get this herb at the moment,â he revealed.
Millie frowned in confusion. âThe Four Great Families are the
Greers, the Websons, the Stringers, and the Lowells. Why would the Lowells still need a mere herb like the Snowdrop to butter up the Greers?â
âYou canât figure it out, can you, silly little girl? Itâs because the Lowells have an ulterior motive!â Arthur picked up his newspaper and deliberately stalled.
Millie was getting more anxious, so she urged, âWell? Keep alking, Grandpa!â
âSure. Give me a Snowdrop plant, and Iâll continue.â Arthur chuckled.
He knew Snowdrops was Laylaâs favorite herb. It was extra valuable and rare. Few existed in the world.
Millie was speechless. Arthur was used to negotiating, so he posed another massive challenge to her.
âOkay, fine.â Millie nodded but avoided discussing the herb for now. She asked, âWhat does the Lowell family want?â
âThe Greer and Lowell families have a barrier between them. Naturally, the Lowells want to use a Snowdrop herb to break that barrier and conveniently boost Joanna into joining the Greers. Itâs obvious, you silly girl!â Arthur tapped Millieâs forehead.
Millie shut her eyes, then snapped them wide open as if she had made a giant realization.
Werenât the Greers against letting Joanna marry into their family? If the Lowells manage to please Selma during her birthday party, they could potentially change Selmaâs impression of Joanna.
Once the Greers accepted Joanna, she and Winston would undoubtedly be able to get together,
Arthur explained, âThe Four Great Families had hierarchies in place. The Lowells were at the bottom of their ranks. They would increase. in rank if they and the Greer family became allies.â
Millie pursed her lips. She felt an onset of a headache at the mention of business politics.
âI bet a girl in love like yourself doesnât understand what Iâm saying, right?â Arthur dissed her.
Millie couldnât fight back as her attention had indeed been on Winston these past few years. She had no clue the Four Great Families secretly had conflicts of interest among each other.
âThe Lowells are now desperately spending money to hire people to find a Snowdrop plant. How pathetic!â Arthur joked.
Millie wondered, âWhyâs Grandpa so devious all of a sudden?â
âLetâs see whoâll end up bringing a Snowdrop to the birthday party in the end!â A flicker of anticipation and amusement appeared in Arthurâs eyes.
Millie cocked a brow and chuckled. Surprisingly, even she couldnât wait to see which family would end up with the Snowdrop plant the entire city was after.
âMillie,â Terrence suddenly called out to her from the staircase.
Millie looked up and heard him shout, âYouâre going on a blind date tomorrow night!â
