In the castle gardens, James was chasing after his son and stopped to take a breath, allowing his son to join the other children. He felt as if someone was watching him and looked up to see his wife sitting at the window seat in her bedchambers with a frown on her face, reading a letter. He wished he knew what he could do to help his wife but he felt so lost. From afar, Mary watched her brother-in-law and sighed sadly. Nathaniel came up to her and said to her, a concerned look on his face, "Is everything alright, Mary?" Mary replied, nodding, "I am alright. I just wish I knew what to do to help my sister and her husband. Elizabeth still is in mourning and it has already been a month. Surely, she would've gotten better by now." Nathaniel said, as he gently rubbed his wife's arms in comfort, "I'd say that she is the luckiest woman in the world. She has a wonderful family who is very supportive of her but everyone is different when it comes to losing a loved one. She just needs time, Mary."
Before Mary could respond, she turned when the harold announced the arrival of Elizabeth and her ladies. She curtsied to her sister, in shock. After they all rose from their bows and curtsies, James came up to his wife and gently pulled her aside. James smiled gently at his wife and said to her, "What brings you to the gardens, Elizabeth?" Elizabeth kept a straight face and replied, pulling away from her husband's touch, "I wanted to spend time with my family or is that not allowed?" James just stepped back in shock, the past Elizabeth wouldn't have said that. Elizabeth only stared at her husband then moved to go visit her other family members. James said to Lady Eleanor, stopping her from following Elizabeth, "Lady Eleanor! May I have a word with you?" Lady Eleanor nodded then curtsied and replied, "Yes, Your Highness?" James said to his wife's friend, "I understand that you and my wife are close friends. How is she when she is alone?" Lady Eleanor sighed and replied, "To be perfectly honest, Your Highness, I am worried about Her Highness. She won't speak to either me, Lady Caterina, Lady Mariana, or Lady Natalia. We all have tried to lift her spirits but she is as cold as ice." James sighed and said to her, "I am sure that my mother has written a letter to Elizabeth about her departure for England. I hope that she can help Elizabeth. I am at a loss."
A month later, the arrival of Queen Claude and her children was well welcomed in court but the court had no idea that the French Queen was there to help their princess. Henry sat in his throne with Anne next to him as the horns sounded the arrival of Queen Claude. Queen Claude entered the throne room, followed by her grown up children and ladies in waiting. Henry stood from his throne and said to the French Queen, smiling at her, "Ah, Queen Claude. We are most honored to have you in our court." Queen Claude curtsied to the English King and replied, smiling, "Believe me, Your Majesty, the honor is all ours." Henry chuckled and said, introducing Anne to Queen Claude, "Allow me to introduce you to my new wife, Anne of Cleves." Anne came up to Henry and said to the French Queen, curtsying to her, "Your Majesty, it is a tremendous honor to be your presence." Queen Claude replied, "Please, call me Claude. I hope you and I can be close friends." Deciding that it was time to greet his mother and siblings, James moved away from his wife and went to greet his family.
Soon after Claude and her children were introduced to the English court, Claude had requested an audience with her daughter-in-law in the gardens. Elizabeth made her way to where her mother-in-law had requested to see her and entered the royal gardens. She spotted Claude underneath a tree, working on her needlework. Elizabeth came up to the Queen and said to her, curtsying, "You requested to see me, Your Majesty?" Claude looked up at Elizabeth, from her spot on the ground, and said, smiling, "Yes, please, sit next to me. Oh, could you send your ladies away? I would prefer to speak with you in private." Elizabeth nodded then turned back to her ladies. Lady, Eleanor, Lady Mariana, Lady Caterina, and Lady Natalia all curtsied to their princess and the Queen and said to them, "Your Majesty, Your Highness." Elizabeth took a seat on the ground next to Claude as her ladies left. Claude gave a small smile to her daughter-in-law and said to her, "James told me what happened, Elizabeth. You have my condolences." Elizabeth muttered underneath her breath, "Of course, he did." Claude noticed this and said to her daughter-in-law, "You must give James a chance. The cause of your miscarriage was neither your fault or his. He is concerned for you, Elizabeth. He's doing what he can and yet you just push him away." Elizabeth only looked away from Claude, not willing to listen. Claude said, sighing, "I have been in the situation you are in before. I have lost two children to miscarriages. I remember what it was like, both the sorrow and pain. However, I recovered with the help of my husband's love. If you allow your husband to help you, then you too shall recover from the sorrow and pain. And maybe soon, in time, you will become pregnant again." Elizabeth looked at her mother-in-law with a sense of sadness but took in what she had said.
Elizabeth felt awful for the way she had treated James during her time of mourning for their child. All this time, he was trying to help her and yet she coldly pushed him away. The princess thanked her mother-in-law then ran off in search of her husband. Claude smiled happily at the direction of the English Princess. With Elizabeth, Elizabeth raced into the castle as she looked for her husband. She found her husband deep in conversation with his three brothers and rushed over to him, causing other courtiers to move out of the way. James sighed and said to his three brothers, "I'm just at a loss." Francis 2nd, James' second brother, nodded and replied, "You just have to give her time, brother. You remember with what happened to our mother and her miscarriages. I have no doubt that Mother will talk some sense into Elizabeth." Before James could respond, he noticed that his wife was coming to him. He turned around and said to her, "Elizabeth? I thought you were with my mother in the gardens." Elizabeth replied, "I was and I came to apologize to you. May we speak in private?" James nodded then excused himself from his brothers and followed his wife. Elizabeth said to her husband, once they were alone, "I wanted to apologize for my behavior towards you. I understand know that you were only trying to help me and I just pushed you away." James replied, "If anything, I should be the one apologizing. Everyone told me that you needed some time and space but I didn't listen." Elizabeth said, chuckling lightly, "Then, I suppose we both are at fault. How do we put this behind us? It was our child after all." James replied, smiling lovingly at his wife, "We'll take one step at a time. And maybe, in time if you wish it, we will have another child." Then, after a while, James brought Elizabeth into a passionate kiss. One she returned with just as much passion.
