âHey, Vell, if youâre not busy-â
âI am in fact slightly preoccupied right now,â Vell said, as he shot several dozen zombies in the face.
âWell this stuff is easy for you, who cares,â Hawke said. âI just wanted to talk about whole âputting me in chargeâ thing.â
âYou mean more than the hours we already spent on it yesterday?â
The semi-official announcement of the looperâs next leader had generated some strong opinions from almost everyone involved. Most of those opinions could best be described as âwhiningâ.
âI feel like we still have some salient points to discuss,â Hawke said.
âI think we pretty much covered it, actually,â Vell said. âYouâre not perfect, but youâre the best candidate.â
âI feel like we could go into a little detail about how heâs the âbestâ,â Kim said. She bulldozed her way through a few dozen zombies and came to a halt by Vell and Hawke.
âLook, Kim, I love you, but youâre a little bit of a blunt instrument,â Vell said.
âI am not a blunt instrument,â Kim snapped. She bludgeoned a few more zombies as Vell spoke. She hated accidentally emphasizing his point, but there were a lot of zombies around. She couldnât just stop punching for the sake of appearances.
âKim, you tried to punch the end of reality,â Vell said.
âI didnât have much else to work with, Vell!â
âThe point stands,â Vell said. âHawke is better at problem solving.â
âWell what about me, then?â Samson said. âIâm pretty good at figuring shit out.â
âDo you really want the breakdown here, Samson?â
âI just feel like the transparency would-â
âFine. Youâre not that good at problem solving, youâre inexperienced, and you lack people skills, which are an essential element of negotiating the complex interpersonal situations that inevitably arise from leadership,â Vell said. âAlso you kicked me in the nuts that one time.â
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
âDamn. Okay, I deserve that.â
âFor the record, Iâm perfectly content to not be in the running for leader,â Alex said.
âNoted,â Vell said. âGod, can you imagine if weâd done this a couple months ago? Youâd have never fucking shut up about how much better of a leader youâd be.â
âYeah, can you imagine,â Alex said. Part of her was still seething with resentment that she was not in the running for leadership, but the better part of her knew it was a bad idea.
âDonât get distracted,â Hawke said. âWeâre not done talking about you thinking I can run this clown show.â
âHey,â said the clowns.
âLook, youâre not perfect, but neither am I,â Vell said. âEven Lee had her flaws. Nobodyâs ever going to be perfect, you just have to be good enough.â
âWell I donât think I am good enough!â
âStop saying that,â Alex advised. âHumility will only make you seem like a better candidate.â
âShit!â
âNot actually a factor,â Vell said. âLook, if you really object, and if all you guys object too, you can feel free to have an election or something next year. Iâm not going to be around, so you can do whatever. This is more of a recommendation than anything.â
âWell the fact you recommended me still makes me more likely to win an election,â Hawke said. âAnd I donât like that.â
âWell youâre going to have to deal with it, because Iâm not taking it back,â Vell said. âNow can we please focus on the zombies? Thereâs like ten million of the damn things, and-â
Ten million became zero as a wave of green-black fire washed over the campus and incinerated all the undead. Now ankle-deep in zombie ash, Vell let out a soft grunt of disgust and stepped up onto the nearest elevated surface, a small bench.
âYouâre welcome,â Kraid said, as he marched across the ash-covered quad. âWas that all of them, or are there more pouring out of some zombie fountain I should know about?â
âNo. Necrotic energy burst, one-time only,â Vell said.
âFantastic. Those decomposing fuckers were disrupting my work,â Kraid said. âWhat were you idiots shouting about?â
âVell says Hawkeâs in charge next year,â Samson said.
âWhich is completely ridiculous,â Hawke said.
âWhat are you talking about, youâre the obvious choice,â Kraid said. âYouâre the only one here with any common sense. As you are currently demonstrating by hiding behind Kim.â
Hawke tried to hide a little harder. Kraid laughed at him.
âAnd besides, youâre all getting ahead of yourselves thinking thereâll be a school to come back to next year.â
âYeah yeah, youâre very menacing, now explode our skeletons or whatever other stupid way youâre going to murder us,â Vell said.
âWell now youâve been all sarcastic about it, itâs not going to be funny anymore,â Kraid said. He turned on his heel and started marching back through the zombie ash. Samson waited until he was a safe distance before he crossed his arms and scoffed defiantly.
âWell, heâs surprisingly easy to deal with.â
Samsonâs skeleton exploded. Vell stood still for a second before wiping a few chunks of Samson off his arm.
âYet another reason heâs not going to be in charge.â
