âUgh, where are those guys?â
Harley checked the time. The other loopers had yet to arrive at their usual morning meeting place. Sheâd gotten out of bed early and everything.
âGive them time, dear, Iâm sure they know what theyâre doing,â Lee chided.
Leanne shook her head and then returned her attention to the doughnut she was eating.
âYeah, see,â Harley said. âThose two are useless. Youâve only been doing this a few weeks and youâre already more in charge than they are.â
âOh, no, no, thatâs not true at all,â Lee said. In spite of Leeâs own protests, Leanne gave a thumbs up.
âSee, Leanne agrees with me,â Harley said. âLetâs find Naomi and Dominic and overthrow them in a bloody coup.â
For the first time in the few weeks theyâd known each other, Leanne seemed to enthusiastically agree with something Harley had said. She clenched a fist and pounded it into her open palm, signaling she was more than ready for a beatdown.
âStop, please,â Lee pleaded. âWe have enough to deal with without any coups, bloody or otherwise.â
Leanne reluctantly unclenched her fists, and Harley relaxed as well. Lee breathed a sigh of relief and untensed her shoulders. Sheâd been about to sweat a hole in her cardigan.
âThank you, now please, just join me in being vigilant for our daily apocalypse,â Lee said. âAnything could happen, explosions, monsters-â
Two loud and somewhat familiar screams filled the air as two figures catapulted out of thin air and crashed into the floor nearby. Lee stared down at the two unexpected arrivals.
â-Us?â
âOf course the one time I get to time travel itâs a cannonball,â Harley grumbled, as she picked herself up off the floor. âEverybody else just gets to stand around and pop into a new timeline, but I have to get launched around and practically land on, uh, myself?â
Harley looked at Harley. Neither Harley blinked.
âOh dear,â said both Leeâs in unison. Then the Past Lee started to panic.
âWhat is this? Are you from some- what are you wearing?â Lee demanded. The Future Lee had been wearing shorts and a tank-top at the time sheâd been displaced, a far cry from the buttoned up cardigan and long skirt of her past counterpart. The fashion choices were the first major difference past Lee noticed, but not the last. âWhat have you done to your hair?â
âOh, bit of a purple ombre in the underlayer,â Lee said. She brushed her colorful hair over her shoulder to show off the dye. âIâve tried a few things, this is going over much better than some of my- oh my god this is first year.â
The presence of Leanne had finally driven the point home. Lee was looking at herself four years in the past, or four years in the future, depending on which Lee one was talking about.
âYes! What are you doing, why are you- you need to change,â Past Lee said. She was trying very hard not to panic right now. Her (their?) parents would not possibly approve of how future Lee looked. âThis isnât- you know what it isnât!â
Future Lee looked at her past self with as much pity as her heart could muster. Once the sadness of seeing her stiff, restrained self became too much to bear, Future Lee stepped up and gave her past self a hug. Past Lee tensed up and stood stiff as a board. This was only the fourth time in her life sheâd been hugged, and by far the most uncomfortable, and temporally confusing.

âWhat are you- am I doing?â
âGood god, I can actually feel how tense we were,â Future Lee said. She released the hug and grabbed her past self by the shoulders. âPlease try to relax a bit, youâre giving us neck strain.â
âI suppose I am a bit- you have a tattoo?â
Past Leeâs brief moment of understanding turned to outrage when she saw the three suns tattoo on Leeâs bare shoulder. The bare shoulder was upsetting on its own.
âYouâre going to get us disowned,â Past Lee said.
âWell,â Future Lee said. âIâd love to talk about that, but, well, time paradoxes, and all that.â
âIt isnât stopping them,â Past Lee said. She pointed at the two Harleyâs. They were getting on much better than the two Leeâs, and after complimenting each other on their nigh-identical red outfits, had turned to friendly conversation.
âHis nameâs Vell, and heâs awesome,â Future Harley said. âLike, we think what weâve got with Lee now is as good as it gets but man, once that dude shows up itâs going to be like a puzzle piece you didnât even know was missing.â
âNice. Also, heâs a dude, right, so Iâm assuming we-â
âGet to sleep with him? Yes, frequently, even,â Future Harley said. âLeanne does too.â
Leanne had been peacefully chewing another doughnut on the sidelines of the temporal oddity. She nearly choked on some sprinkles and then slapped Future Harley in the face.
âOh, shit,â Future Harley mumbled. âForgot how hard you could slap.â
Leanne made a rude gesture to the entire group and then stormed off in a huff.
âHey, it was your idea,â Future Harley shouted. âI mean, itâs going to be your idea. Later.â
âHarley!â
âWhat,â said both Harleyâs at once. A lot of things about Lee had changed, but the way she scolded Harley was consistent across the years.
âStop telling our past selves things,â Future Lee said. âYouâre going to cause a time paradox!â
âNo I wonât,â Future Harley scoffed. âI donât even remember any of this.â
âYou donât- you donât,â Future Lee repeated. âI donât!â
Future Lee turned and pointed to her past self.
âWhy donât I remember being you?â
âI donât know, Iâm not you yet!â
âYouâre me in the past, but I donât remember me from the future being here,â Future Lee said. âI should remember this, remember how I looked, what I felt.â
âNow, obviously Iâm the version of myself here thatâs stupider by four years,â Past Harley said, gesturing to her future self as she spoke. âBut isnât the obvious solution that thereâs just a branched timeline? You traveling to the past changed the future?â
âNah, thatâs not how the timeline works,â Future Harley said. âThereâs only ever one timeline, the Butterfly Guy told us so.â
âButterfly Guy?â
âThatâs a very long story and by the time youâre me, youâll already know it,â Future Harley said. âSo Iâm not going to tell you.â
âUnderstandable.â
âIf itâs not a branch, then what did happen?â Past Lee said.
âThatâs what Iâm trying to figure out,â Future Lee said. âWhat day is it?â
âSeptember 30th.â
âOkay, letâs see,â Future Lee mumbled. âThatâs only as few weeks in. If I recall correctly...oh, that explains it.â
âWhat explains what?â
âWell, you see-â
Across the island, an entire building exploded. The laboratory walls caved in, and a massively, fleshy construct of bloodshot eyes and writhing tendrils emerged from the ruins.
âTremble, mortals! Orkathos the Time-Eater rises!â
âNice meeting us,â Future Lee said. âThisâll all make sense in four years!â
Then Orkathos the Time-Eater fired one of his chrono-devourer eyebeams directly at Future Lee and Harley, temporally obliterating everything in their general vicinity.
âWas there...somebody there?â Past Lee mumbled. âI have the oddest feeling Iâm forgetting something important...and purple.â
âYou would look good in purple,â Past Harley said. âAlso, one thing you should know, I really donât like dramatic pauses.â
âOh, of course, wonât happen again,â Past Lee said. âNow, shall we do something about the giant eyeball monster?â
âYes please.â
----------------------------------------
âAnd so Orkathos technically removed any trace of our presence in that span of time,â Future (now Present) Lee explained. Thanks to some complete temporal obliteration, their past selves did not remember the visit from the future/present selves, though the mechanics of the time loop preserved that knowledge in their current selves.
âSo we were there, but we werenât,â Harley said. âAnd I remember having been there, but I donât remember me being there.â
âBasically, yes.â
âHmm. I kind of have a headache now.â
âMe too, dear,â Lee said. âDo you want to get some lunch and never think about this again?â
âYes please.â
