âAlright, Hawke, go look in my desk, I need to find blueprints for the grabby arm we need,â Harley said. Botley would need a specialized limb to prevent todayâs particularly hard-to-reach apocalypse, and Harley had to build one fast. While the other loopers gathered supplies and tools from around Harleyâs disorganized room, Hawke searched the equally disorganized drawers. He found what he was looking for, and something else too.
âHarley, what is this?â
He held the blueprint in one hand and a conspicuously well-drawn cartoon of Harley as some kind of dog-human hybrid in the other. Harley snatched the blueprints away and barely noticed the cartoon as she headed for her workshop desk.
âIs this like a memento? Did you get turned into a weird dog person on some other loop?â
âI actually did, but it was not that cute,â Harley said. âIt was honestly kind of horrific, would not recommend.â
âOkay, so what is this, then?â
âThatâs my fursona.â
âI am probably going to regret this, but what is a fursona?â
âItâs just a cute drawing of me as a Shih Tzu,â Harley said. âDo you not know what a furry is?â
âI definitely donât,â Hawke said.
âOh good, we get to sit through this again,â Vell said, glancing sidelong at Lee.
âIâve streamlined my explanation since last year, Vell, itâs not going to take thirty minutes this time,â Harley said. âBasically itâs just people who enjoy anthropomorphized animal artwork of various kinds. For some people itâs a lifestyle, for some people itâs a sex thing, and for some people, like me, itâs just a bunch of cute art.â
âWhat?â
Harley stopped assembling the robotic limb long enough to point a soldering iron in Hawkeâs direction.
âLook, I donât have time to sum up decades of internet subculture for you,â Harley said. âJust google it. With safesearch on. Thereâs a very small percentage who get weird about it, but they get really fucking weird.â

Kim stopped herself from doing a brain search just in time to avoid seeing some really weird shit. Harley returned to her work, talking as she did so. Ranting actually helped her focus.
âAnyway, Iâm a Shih Tzu because Iâm small yet adorable, playful, and friendly. Easy.â
âOh. Okay. So hypothetically, Iâd be like a squirrel, or something, because Iâm skittish,â Hawke said.
âI was going to say a horse, because youâre also big and sturdy, but squirrels are cute,â Harley said. âWe can go with a squirrel.â
âYou were âgoing to sayâ?â Kim said, raising an eyebrow. âDo you have one of those ready to go for everyone?â
âYes, as a matter of fact,â Harley said. âVellâs a maned wolf.â
âAwkwardly long-legged, yet focused, skilled, and fluffy,â Vell said flatly.
âI am apparently a snowy owl,â Lee said, with much more enthusiasm. âDignified and wise, with sharp talons, yet fluffy.â
âBeing fluffy is a defining trait for both of you?â Kim said.
âI have very huggable friends,â Harley snapped. âAnyway, Kim, do you want a fursona? We gave Hawke one, I donât want you to be left out.â
âIâll get back to you on that,â Kim said. âIâm not even sure how well I identify with humans yet, I donât need to start trying to identify with animals.â
âUnderstandable, let me know if you change your mind!â
----------------------------------------
âHarley! I changed my mind!â
Harley didnât mind her door being knocked open -that seemed to happen quite frequently- but she had no clue what Kim was talking about.
âChanged your mind about what, Kim?â
âThe furry thing.â
âThe what- oh, that,â Harley said. âSorry, itâs been a whole week.â
âOh, right, sorry,â Kim said. âI remember literally everything in perfect detail at all times so sometimes I access a memory and it feels like it happened more recently than it did.â
âThatâs deeply concerning, but letâs focus on the solvable problem,â Harley said. âWhatâs this about a fursona?â
âIâm a pallas cat,â Kim said confidently. âSolitary, isolated, rarely seen, but very fluffy.â
âIs being fluffy important to you?â
âYes.â
âIs this your way of telling me you want a hug?â
Kim calculated that in her head for a few seconds.
âProbably not,â Kim said. âI still don't like to be touched.â
âWhen was the last time you tried?â
âI have no idea,â Kim said. Sheâd replayed the memories enough times to be slightly confused. Harley held her arms wide.
âWant to give it a go? Just for the sake of science?â
After eight seconds of deliberation, which was a long time for someone with a supercomputer for a brain, Kim stepped forward and awkwardly grabbed Harley, then immediately let her go and stepped back.
âNope, no, still bad,â Kim said. Harley nodded in understanding.
âWell, at least we made some kind of progress,â Harley said. âYou want some art of your new catgirl? Thereâs always furries open for commission somewhere.â
âIâm good, thank you,â Kim said. âThis was just...a fun thought experiment.â
âDonât do dramatic pauses around me, please.â
âSorry.â
