I had seen many things in my life.
Deals worth billions being signed over a single glass of whiskey. Men who thought they were untouchable falling to their knees when the weight of their own arrogance crushed them. Promises made and broken within the same breath.
But nothing-nothing-compared to the pure, undiluted rage in Avni Rajput's message yesterday night.
She knew.
I had expected it. I knew it was only a matter of time before she found out. But the way she had stormed out of the Mehendi ceremony, her shoulders tense like she was holding back the urge to burn the entire damn world down, had been a sight to behold.
A part of me had been waiting for her reaction, for the inevitable confrontation that would come next.
And yet, as I stood at the entrance of her cousin's Sangeet the next evening, a small smirk tugging at my lips, I had to admit-watching her unravel was going to be a lot more fun than I initially thought.
She hadn't arrived yet.
I could tell by the way the energy in the room was still light, unaffected. No storm clouds in sight. Yet. But I knew the moment she walked in, that energy would shift.
Because Avni Rajput didn't just enter a room-she commanded it. She was the kind of woman who could
make people second-guess their own confidence with a single look. The kind who made me-a man who had built his entire empire on control-want to push her limits just to see how far she would go.
I made my way toward the bar, ignoring the small talk and fake pleasantries from distant relatives and business associates. I wasn't here for them. I was here for her.
Because while Avni had just discovered our impending marriage, I had known about it for weeks.
I had sat across from my father in his office, the air thick with cigar smoke and expectation, as he laid it out for me. "She's the best match for you," he had said, his voice leaving no room for argument. I had leaned back in my chair, amused. "You make it sound like a business merger." He had only smirked. "Isn't it?"
And just like that, it had been settled. I was also not given any option just like her. I knew sulking is not gonna help infront of my dad because he is more stubborn than me.
There were debts to be repaid, alliances to be strengthened, and in our world, there was no such thing as coincidence. Avni's father owed my father and this marriage was the solution. Simple. Clean. Ruthless.
I was nursing a glass of whiskey when the air around me shifted. The once lively chatter dipped, just slightly. Heads turned. Movements slowed. And then I saw her.
Avni Rajput, dressed in her lehenga, her outfit hugging her curves with an effortless kind of elegance. Her long hair cascaded over one shoulder, her skin glowing under the soft golden lights.
(Her dress)
But it wasn't just her appearance that had the room holding its breath. It was the fire in her eyes.
A fire that was aimed directly at me.
I took a slow sip of my drink, letting her approach, the corner of my mouth twitching upward. The storm had arrived. She stopped in front of me, arms crossed, chin tilted at that perfect, defiant angle.
"You knew," she said, her voice steady but sharp enough to cut. I swirled the whiskey in my glass, watching the amber liquid catch the light. "About what, exactly?" Her eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb with me, Mr Singhania."
I let the silence stretch, enjoying the tension crackling between us. Then, finally, I leaned in slightly, just enough to lower my voice. "Yes, I knew."
Her lips pressed into a thin line, and for a moment, I thought she might throw her drink at me just like last time. Instead, she did something far more dangerous.
She smiled. It wasn't warm. It wasn't soft. It was the kind of smile that promised war.
"Well," she said smoothly, stepping even closer, "I hope you're ready, because I am not the kind of woman who follows orders." I smirked, tilting my head. "Good. I hate obedience."
Her breath hitched for just a second-barely noticeable, but I saw it. And that was all the confirmation I needed.
This wasn't just going to be a marriage.
This was going to be a battlefield.
And I couldn't wait.
