"Justin you can't just go around trying to fight people!" Jason exclaimed. We were all home now. After school, Jacob took me to get a haircut. Now my hair was a little below my shoulders. It felt so light and so free. I will admit, I am going to miss my waist length hair, but it will probably be back by the summer.
So here we are now. The teacher called Jason and told him about our rude behaviors, and now Justin and I were in trouble. "For heaven's sake! I wasn't going to fight him. He was just really starting to get on my nerves," Justin said.
I just sat back and watched the entire scene unfold. Why am I here? I don't know. Jason held the bridge of his nose. "Okay. So what's this about disturbing the class all the time?" he asked. Justin and I made eye contact.
"Well, we aren't disturbing it all of the time," Justin said scratching the back of his head. "Woah, don't say we. You are the one always disturbing me," I said. If we were going to get into trouble, Justin was going to take the most of it, since, after all, he is the real problem here. Jason stared at him, with that look that made you want to spill everything. "Fine, fine. I do, but the other students don't seem to mind at all."
"That still isn't a pass to not pay attention in class," Jason said. "I do pay attention in class."
"Justin stop. You are digging a deeper grave," Dylan said from the living room couch. "Shut up." Jason sighed running a hand through his hair. "Look, just try to pay attention a little more okay?" Jason asked. Personally, I think he was going a little soft on him, but that's just me.
"Okay, are we done here?" I asked. Jason thought for a minute and then nodded. "Yeah, get out my sight," he said ruffling Justin and I's hair. "Uggh, Jason I just go it done," I said trying to fix it. He laughed and walked off. Of course, he would do something like that.
I managed to get a lot of signatures on my cast today. Most were from people I didn't even know, but it was a nice gesture. "If I didn't know any better, I would think you were popular," Grayson said from the couch.
I almost forgot he was here. "Maybe I am," I said. He scoffed and shook his head at me. "You are not fooling anyone," he said. "Please, you're just jealous cause Dylan is your only friend."
I took a seat on the floor cause I felt like it. "I have many other friends for your information, spicy," he said smirking at the end. I don't know what for exactly. It's not like he won the argument or whatever.
"Are you guys done? Cause you are giving me a headache," Dylan said. I rolled my eyes. "You guys give me a headache on a daily basis."
"Aw come on Dylan. Don't be such a sour patch kid," Grayson said pinching Dylan's cheek. Dylan slapped his hand away making Grayson laugh. "What's your problem?" I asked He was unusually quiet and maybe even a little upset looking.
"Yeah, Dylan. What's wrong?" Grayson asked with a smirk on his face. Dylan glared at him and turned his attention back to his phone. "Well you see," Grayson started ignoring the glare from Dylan.
"Dylan planned a lovely little date with dear Eva, but she wasn't having any of that. She wanted to meet his dear siblings, ie, you cause you to know it's been awhile. But you see, Dylan doesn't want that, but she was very adamant. So here we are. With a pouting Dylan because he doesn't want his girlfriend to meet his siblings." Grayson leaned back on the couch and looked at Dylan with a sinister look.
I totally ignored everything else Grayson said and started bouncing up and down. "We finally get to meet Eva? OMG, this is the greatest day ever," I said smiling widely at Dylan. I thought the two would break up before I would ever get the chance to meet her.
Dylan groaned and stuffed his face into the couch. "Ugh stop talking about it. I am tortured enough," he said. "So what time is she coming? When should I get ready?" I asked. I sat next to him on the couch and poked his cheek with each question.
He swatted my hand away. "She isn't coming today. She is coming on Friday, after school." I was so excited and nervous to meet her. More excited though. I have seen the way Dylan talks about her and the look he has on his face when he does.
He really likes her, and I hope this relationship is much healthier than the one between him and Susan.
"I especially can't wait to meet her," Grayson said smirking. Dylan shot up and was about to slap him. "I'M KIDDING, I'm kidding," he said holding his hands up to protect his face. Dylan got up. "I honestly don't know why I am friends with you," he mumbled and left the living room.
"You know you love me," Grayson shouted at Dylans retreating figure. Dylan shouted back something that would surely get him in trouble if Jason were to hear.
Grayson chuckled and pulled out his phone. I thought about Sally and what she was doing. I haven't seen her since I got home from school, and I wanted to give her some space but not too much. I definitely wanted to do something that would get her mind off of things.
I got up and was about to leave when Grayson stopped me. "Wait, Lisa," he said walking towards me. "I actually wanted to talk to you about something," he said pocketing his phone. I raised an eyebrow at him. "Okay?"
"I know you think this entire thing with Sally is your fault," he said looking at me. I furrowed my eyebrows. "I di-"
"You don't have to lie. I just want you to know that it's not. That's all." I stared at him and nodded slowly. "Alright then. Message received. Thanks," I said awkwardly. Having a one on one with Grayson, was like talking to a tree. It was just weird.
I was about to leave when he stopped me again. "Wait a minute," he said then left. I stood there impatiently tapping my foot. This was probably another prank from him. I honestly wouldn't be surprised. He came back with a sharpie in his hand. "You didn't let your favorite person sign your cast," he said.
I gaped at him. "Why did you have to make it sound so serious?" I asked agitated. "Would you have listened to me otherwise?" he asked raising an eyebrow. I rolled my eyes. "Fine, hurry up," I said holding my arm out for him. "So you don't deny that I am your favorite?" he asked whiles drawing. "Shut up."
He had a smirk on his face as he scribbled on my arm. He straightened up, smiling at his work. Now I especially can't wait to get this off now. "Look at my masterpiece," he said. I looked at it and grimaced. It read, 'Sweet and Spicy. Signed by your favorite crush.'
"What is the meaning of this?" I exclaimed. "View it as a privilege. Not a lot of girls get that." He winked at me and ruffled my hair. I smacked his hand away and glared at his retreating figure.
If I could get rid of him, I most definitely would.
I continued to where I was going originally which was the guest room. I knocked on the door and waited. There was some shuffling and the door opened. Sally looked the same as she did when I left this morning.
I smiled at her and she returned one weakly. She sat on the bed and I took that as an invitation to sit next to her. "How are you holding up?" I asked looking at her. She looked really worn out. It was as if there was no life in her anymore.
She shrugged and looked out of the window. "Fine, I guess," she said rubbing her face. I looked down and started playing with my the end of my hair. Now that I got a haircut, I couldn't stare at the mass of split ends I had.
"My dad is coming today. Do you wanna come with me to ask him about it?" I asked looking up. I caught her staring at me. "Yeah." There was another moment of silence. "Look Sally I am really sorry. If I could have taken your families place I would. There was no reason for them to get caught up in this."
"Yeah, well it is what it is," she said. That, for some reason, struck the heart. I knew she blamed me. No matter how many times she tried to say otherwise. She blamed me. I nodded. The doorbell ringing brought me out of my thoughts.
"That's probably Dad. He is going to be here for about 3 hours. You can come with me, to talk to him."
"Yeah, I will be there. I'm going to freshen up though." I nodded and walked out. Looking at Sally now, she is almost unrecognizable. She used to be full of happiness and now she was like a zombie.
I walked into the living room to see Dad and Jason talking near the kitchen. "Hey, Dad," I said waving at him. He smiled at me, but it was quickly replaced with a frown. "What happened?" he asked. I followed his eyes to my cast.
How should I explain this? I mean, I was going to tell him about the entire Sally situation so it doesn't make sense lying.
Before I could say anything, Dylan came downstairs. "Good, you are here. We need to ask you something." Dad looked at Jason, then at Dylan, then at me. "What about?" he asked. Dylan gestured for me to ask.
"Uh, well. I don't know if you know about it or not, but Mom took Sally's family, and we were hoping that you knew something about it." I looked up at him hoping for some sort of recognition to pop into his eyes. I sighed in disappointment when he shook his head.
Dylan gave me a sympathetic smile. I was really hoping he would know something. "Oh okay," I said. "I'm sorry, but I broke contact with your mother the day I started coming to see you guys," he said. I smiled a little at that. It was definitely progress.
Dylan nodded. "Okay, well that's all," Dylan said walking back up the stairs. "Well, the time is yours," Jason said before also walking out of the kitchen. I sat at the island and put my head on the counter. "Are you sure you don't know anything? Anything at all?" I asked.
Dad looked at me and smiled. He sat on the other side of me. "No. I really wish I did. When did it happen?"
"Like one day ago."
He nodded. "I'm sorry Lisa. I know she is your best friend-"
"Yeah, she was. I don't know if she will ever forgive me for this. Especially if we never find her family," I said tearing up.
"Well find them." I looked up at him. "We'll?"
"Yes, I will help. I know she means a lot to you," he said. I smiled and before I knew it, I hugged him as best I could with a cast on. "Thanks, Dad." It took him a while to return the gesture, but he did. He tightened the hug. It felt good to be in my fathers embrace. It was something I would get jealous of when I saw other girls hugging their fathers.
I always longed for that father-daughter relationship. "I am so glad you are coming back," I mumbled back into his chest. "I am happy you guys are giving me another chance."
I pulled out of the hug. "There has definitely been progress. I mean Dylan said it was good you came," I said. I knew that wasn't exactly what he meant, but it is way more than he would have ever said.
Dad chuckled a little. "Yeah. I guess you're right." We sat in silence for a little. I had a lot of questions I wanted to ask. I figured now would be a good time to start. "So how long are you going to come over before you stay for good?" I asked looking up at him.
"Lisa, that may not be for a very long time."
"Well, how long?" I would think like maybe a few more months. "I don't know, honestly. It's really until...well, everyone wants me too," he said. I nodded. I imagine it would be really awkward if he were to move in right now. "So where do you work?"
He scratched the back of his head and laughed nervously. "That's another long story," he said glancing at me. I furrowed my eyebrows. "Okay?....what do you like to do?"
"I love coming here." I playfully rolled my eyes. "Dad-"
"I am serious. This is the only thing I look forward to now. Besides, I got something for you," he said. He dug into his jean pocket and pulled out a little box. He opened it and my eyes widened.
"I really regret not being in your life. Not being the correct father figure you needed. If I could go back in time and change my actions, I would do it in a heartbeat but I can't. This just goes to show that I promise to be in your life from now on and forever no matter what happens."
I held the beautiful bracelet in my hand. It was so shiny and just perfect. A small blue stone was centered on the bracelet. It had my initials on it. A. E. J. Annalisa Elizabeth Johnson. I almost teared up at the small but meaningful gift.
"Dad...I don't know what to say," I started playing around with the bracelet. "Don't say anything. You deserve it for being such a strong girl, despite all of the things you have been through," he said looking at me.
I continued to stare at the bracelet, admiring it. "Do you want me to help you put it on?" he asked. I nodded giving him the bracelet. I would have liked it on my right hand, but because of the cast, I had to get it on my left.
He put it on and I marveled at how good it looked. "Thank you so much," I said hugging him yet again. "Of course. Know that from now on. You can count on me."
"Oh, I am sorry. Am I interrupting something?" I looked over to the doorway to see Sally. I almost forgot she was coming out. I pulled away from Dad giving him a small smile. "It's okay," I said. Sally gave Dad a small glare. She still hadn't forgiven him for his past actions.
"Uum, hi Sally," Dad said. Sally nodded in acknowledgment and looked towards me. "Does he know anything?" she asked. I shook my head. She sighed and nodded briefly before leaving.
I followed her out and stopped her. "Sally, I am really sorry. I wanted him to know something too-"
"Save it! Lisa. Admit it, none of this is bothering you. You seem fine to me, to say the least."
"How could you say that? This is tearing me up inside. I would feel the same way if this happened to my family. Heck, you are my family. Sally, I view you as a sister. That's how long we have been best friends. So you cannot say that I seem fine while you are suffering cause I am not."
She stared at me for a couple of seconds before turning around and leaving back towards the guest room. I didn't follow her this time. I jumped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. Turning around I saw it was Dad.
I found myself crying into his chest. This entire situation was stressful and tiring. How could she say that? She was basically saying that I didn't care. And as much as I did, there was nothing I could do without probably making the situation worse.
"What happened?" Jason asked coming down the stairs. "What did you do?" Dylan asked Dad following Jason. I pulled away from Dad and wiped my tears. "Would you guys stop always assuming that he did something or is about to do something to me? This isn't his fault," I half shouted to them.
Dylan blinked in surprise. "Okay?.... Then why are you crying?"
"Why do you think!? Sally blames me for what happened to her family. What am I supposed to do? She probably hates me," I sat on the couch and furiously wiped at the tears. Jason sat next to me and hugged me. "That's not true. She is just going through a hard time right now. Don't take anything personally." I nodded and looked away.
There was a knock at the door that brought me out of my thoughts. That seemed to be happening a lot lately. Dad went to answer it. My eyes widened when I saw who walked in. It was Sally's family.
