Chapter 1274
Madeline Crawford and Jeremy Whitman
âEveline?â Eloise snapped out of it and widened her big, pretty eyes. She examined Madeline with a critical gaze. Then, she shook her head. âThis is not Eveline, no.â
Madeline felt something within her breaking into pieces when she heard Eloise denying her.
She looked over at Eloise, who was behind Sean, with a cautious gaze as tears started flowing.
Madeline composed herself and said to Sean, âWhy is she this way? Why canât she recognize me?
Dad, whatâs going on?â
Sean let out a long sigh and said while feeling heartbroken, âItâs all because of Lana.â
âLana?â
Sean nodded, his eyes gleaming with a deep hatred for Lana.
âBecause of her, our courtyard was burned into ashes. Your mom thought that you were in trouble when the fire happened. Ever since then, she keeps saying she wants to look for you. Day in day out, she would keep muttering your name hundreds of times, or even thousands of timesâ¦â
At that point, Sean choked. He grasped Eloiseâs hand. His eyes were still brewing with the indescribable hurt and care he had for Eloise.
âSoon after, your mom became like this because she desperately misses you. Now, she canât recognize anybody but me. Not just that, but her intelligence has declined as well. Occasionally, she canât carry out even the most basic day-to-day tasks.â
Madeline felt her heart being pierced by a sharp blade after listening to Seanâs explanation. The hurtful feeling seeped deep into her bone marrow.
âLetâs not bother about her, Sean. Letâs go look for Eveline!â Eloise looked at Madeline calmly. She grabbed Seanâs hand tightly, her expression suddenly becoming anxious and worried. âSean, do you think perhaps Eveline isnât willing to forgive us? Is that why that kid went into hiding and doesnât want to meet us?â
As Eloise spoke, she started blaming herself. âItâs all my fault, itâs my fault. I didnât recognize Eveline and mistook that bad lady as my daughter instead. Iâve let Eveline down and allowed her to endure lots of suffering. Iâm not a good mother. Eveline will never forgive me. Sheâll neverâ¦â
Madeline continued crying when she heard Eloiseâs muttering that was full of self-blame.
She walked to the front of Eloise and grabbed her hand. âMom, Eveline has stopped being angry with you for a long time now. Stop blaming yourself. Evelineâs back now and will never be apart from you again, okay?â
Eloise frowned and stared at Madeline, looking absent-minded.
After some time, she once again freed her hands from Madelineâs grip and ran to Seanâs side. âThis lady is very weird. She keeps saying sheâs Eveline.â
Eloise kept shaking her head when she looked at Madeline. âNo, this isnât Eveline. Youâd better stop lying to me. Eveline wouldnât bother about me anymore.â
ââ¦â
Madeline was hurt when she heard it.
Sean was also feeling helpless. He comforted Madeline when he saw her being so sad. âEveline, your mom is sick. She doesnât mean it. Donât take those words to heart.â
Madeline shook her head gently. Of course, she had no intention to blame Eloise. She was just upset and felt sorry for her mother.
âEloise, we have a guest here. Didnât you already prepare some snacks? If theyâre ready, then take them out for our guest to try.â Sean tapped on Elosieâs hand gently and reminded. As if he was reassuring a little kid, he was patient in guiding Eloise to carry out her daily activities.
Eloiseâs expression suddenly changed as she put on a smile on her face. She glanced at Madeline and smiled. âPlease wait for a moment. Iâll go get you some snacks to eat.â
Madeline nodded, feeling her insides writhing with sorrow. âAlright, Iâll wait for you â
âMmm,â Eloise answered with satisfaction. She then spun around and left for the kitchen.
Sean went over and held Madelineâs hand. âEveline, come sit beside me.â
Madeline went ahead and sat down. âDad, do you still remember about the fire that broke out at our house that day? Why are you and Mom suddenly in Y Country now?â
