Chapter 37 Get 5 >
= Menu Kaneâs words hit me like a slap. I whipped my head around to glare at him. His eyes were full of hate when they met mine.
I wanted to scream the truth at him that those children werenât âfruits of sinâ but his own flesh and blood. But what good would it do? Heâd probably just say they were products of that one nightâs âservice.â No, this man in front of me didnât deserve to know about my children.
I forced myself to stay quiet. I had to keep my cool around him.
Coming here felt like walking into a trap. This man wasnât going to let me have one peaceful moment. âWhatâs wrong with you, Kane?â Diana scolded. âWhy would you say such things? Nobody does that.â
Kane gave a dark laugh. âOh, people do it, Mom. Some people do. Many donât even give their kids their fatherâs name. Want to know why?â
Everyone frowned as they listened. Beta Finn cleared his throat and put a hand on Kaneâs shoulder.
âAlpha, letâs not talk about other people.â
âWhy not, Finn? In our world, they call those children bas-â
âALPHA Kane!â I cut him off, jumping to my feet and shooting him a fierce look.
His parents looked startled by my outburst. They had no idea their son was talking about my children.
I couldnât take my eyes off Kane. My whole body trembled with anger.
He just rolled his eyes, like he couldnât care less. His only goal was to hurt me.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I fought to hold them back.
âHe was about to call his own children bastards!â I thought, clenching my fists.
âKane, shut your mouth! How dare you speak to Selene like that?â Garrett snapped.
Since I was adopted, he thought Kane was talking about me.
Kane didnât answer his father. His eyes stayed locked on me, narrowed with hatred â hatred for my children, his own children.
âStay calm, Selene. Donât let him get to you,â I told myself.
I turned to Garrett and Diana. âIâm sorry for my outburst,â I said, bowing my head.
No matter how angry I was, he was still their packâs Alpha. I shouldnât have yelled at him.
Though if weâd been alone, I wouldâve slapped him again, just like that night in the hotel room.
How dare he talk about my children like that?
âItâs okay, Selene,â Garrett said.
Diana frowned at Kane. âSomeone else should be apologizing, not you. Sometimes I donât even recognize this boy anymore.â
From their reactions, I could tell they werenât happy with Kane at all. I remembered how disappointed Garrett had looked at the pack party when he saw Ruby.

Menu âJust because I donât talk back doesnât mean you can disrespect me all the time,â Kane said to his parents.
Garrett scoffed. âNow youâre lecturing your parents? Do you want us to bow down to you, Alpha?â
Diana grabbed his hand, patting his shoulder. âGarrett, let it go. Youâre not well enough for this argument.â
Kane smirked before turning to his beta. âBeta Finn, remind them of their own words from when I was just a regular pack member.â
Finn gave Kane a look, shaking his head to stop him. But Kane was stubborn. His stare made it clear he wouldnât back down.
Finn lowered his head and repeated Alpha Garrettâs old words: âWhen it comes to position, age and relationships donât matter. If youâre the head Alpha, everyone must bow to you, even if youâre a son.â
We all stared at Beta Finn in silence.
Kane let out a bitter laugh. He stood up, glanced at me, then looked at his father. âRemember your own words. Iâll never forgive you for messing with my life and forcing me to do things I didnât want to do.â
His father looked away. His motherâs eyes filled with tears. My heart broke watching them. They seemed so helpless facing their son.
How could Kane treat his parents this way? How could he forget they gave him life and this position?
His arrogance had grown so much he couldnât even see how badly he was treating his own parents.
âIâm leaving,â he announced and walked to the door.
Beta Finn stayed quiet, but his glance at me and Kaneâs parents showed his guilt over his Alphaâs behavior.
After Kane and his beta left, I turned to his parents.
I held Garrettâs shaking hand. He looked sick â not just physically, but mentally too. Diana was crying, which shook me to my core. Sheâd always been such a strong woman in my eyes. Seeing her like this was almost unbearable.
I couldnât help asking, âWhy donât you stand up to him? The way he talks to you... itâs just too much.â
Garrett let out a heavy sigh. âIn these past few years, Iâve noticed changes in him. Heâs not the Kane ! raised anymore. Heâs just the head Alpha who knows how to fight and rule the wolf world.â
âBut heâs still your son.â
Diana shook her head. âHe still blames us for ruining his life by making him marry you.â
