Chapter 0124
Chapter 0124
Serenaâs POV
I pause at the shop door, my fingers brushing against the chipped paint.
It has been days since weâve had customers. Iâm afraid Iâll walk into the shop and find it empty, except for Stevie.
My heart beats fast as I push the door open. To my surprise, there are a couple of people browsing the jewelry. Itâs not plenty, but itâs enough to make me smile.
The shop isnât empty anymore. Thatâs what matters.
I walk over to the counter. Stevie looks up and waves at me.
âHey, girl,â she says. âLooks like weâre back in business.
I nod, glancing around at the customers. âYeah, itâs a good sign. Maybe things are starting to pick up.â
Stevie smiles. âLetâs hope so. By the way, have you seen Twitter last night? It was crazy.â
Fuck. I havenât seen what people said online about Maxâs apology. Now, Iâm getting nervous.
âNo, I didnât get a chance to look at the comments,â I say.
Stevie furrows her brows, studying my face. âWhy? What did you do?â she asks.
âI fell asleep. I had a pretty long day yesterday,â I say. Which is true, but I leave out the part about Bill and me talking and him spending the night again at my place.
âI see. Anyway, people are canceling Max. It was brutal. I donât know how heâs gonna recover from this.â
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. âHe kind of brought it upon himself, but at least he did the right thing in the end. I feel for him, though.â
Stevie leans in. âBut some people are still defending Max.â She glances around, then lowers her voice to a whisper. âPeople are saying your exâhusband only paid Max to say those things for damage control.â
I pause, thinking it over. Sure, itâs possible Bill paid Max to apologize and clear our names. But something tells me Max wouldnât risk his reputation for money. And Bill isnât that kind of a man. Heâs not perfect but he has integrity. 1
What he did last night was career suicide as a fashion designer. Thereâs more to all this⦠but Bill isnât telling me everything.
âWell, girl. What do you think?â Stevie asks. âDid Bill pay Max to apologize?â
âI donât think so. I know Bill, and he wouldnât do that,â I reply.
Stevie narrows her eyes, looking like sheâs about to press further, but a familiar face enters the shop. Itâs Taylor.
Taylor glides in with ethereal grace, wearing a flowing white dress that sways with every step. Her silver heels click softly on the floor, and a delicate gold necklace glints at her collarbone.

âHey, Serena! Stevie!â Taylor calls out as she approaches us.

âTaylor, it feels like itâs been ages!â I say, smiling as she reaches the counter. We havenât heard from her in a couple of days. Sheâs been so busy.
Stevie brightens up. âTaylor! How have you been?â
Taylor smiles warmly. âIâve been good, just busy with work and everything. How about you two?â she asks. âHow are you holding up since⦠Max posted that soâcalled âreviewâ?â
âWeâre managing,â I say. âItâs been a bit slow, but today seems better.â
âYeah, we donât have any customers for a couple of days,â Stevie adds,
Taylor frowns and shakes her head. âThatâs awful! Why would Max and Eden make it so personal? Do you have any idea why theyâd do that to you?â
I canât really say my exâmotherâinâlaw paid Max to destroy my jewelry in the fashion show. It would put Bill in a bad place. âI guess Max just didnât like me,â I lie. âWhen we were preparing for the fashion show, we kept arguing about what jewelry would look good for his designs.â
âOh, I get it! Like your creative ideas just donât match?â Stevie asks. âI hate when that happens.â She looks disappointed, as if remembering something similar from her own experience as a photographer.
Taylorâs eyes widen, her brows knitting together as her lips press into a thin line. âStill, Max doesnât have the right to ruin your work because of his feelings.â
âItâs okay, Taylor,â I say, trying to sound reassuring. âIâm over it now. Iâve dealt with worse people.â As I say this, I canât help but think of Elena, my exâmotherâinâlaw from hell, and Doris, Billâs psychotic wannabe wife.
âThatâs not right, Serena. You canât let other people step all over you,â Taylor insists. âMax and Eden must pay for what they did.â
I shrug. âWell, I canât do anything about it now.â
Taylor steps closer, her expression serious. âThere is, Serena. I think itâs time for people to hear your side of the story.â
