âI was quite naughty as a child, so I often got injured.
I eventually learned to tend to my own wounds.
â
Lucinda could tell that he was hiding something else.
But seeing that he wasnât keen on telling her the truth, she didnât press any further.
Silence fell in the room, making the atmosphere a little tense.
Nathaniel finished securing the bandages, but he didnât get up.
Lucinda raised an eyebrow and looked pointedly at the blood stains on the bed.
âTake the entire bedding set to the backyard and wash them by hand.
Youâre not allowed to sleep until youâre done hanging them out to dry.
â
âOkay,â Nathaniel nodded without a secondâs hesitation.
He looked utterly subservient.
Lucinda would have believed him if not for the fact that he had sneaked into her room brandishing a knife.

The bastard had excellent acting skills, she had to give him that.
And whenever he acted all docile and obedient, he was always plotting something else behind the scenes.
It irked Lucinda.
She wanted to stomp on his dignity and destroy him, no matter what it took.
âIt looks like I wouldnât be able to get some sleep tonight,â she murmured before heading for the door.
âWhere are you going?â Nathaniel asked, latching on to her wrist before she could even take more than a couple of steps.
âIâll go and stay at Cyrusâ place for a few nights,â Lucinda answered nonchalantly.
âI forbid it!â Nathaniel blurted out before he could catch himself.
He belatedly recognized the flash of outrage in Lucindaâs eyes, and he instantly softened his tone.
âI mean, itâs not courteous to bother him at such a late hour, and⦠And it wonât be appropriate for you two to stay under the same roof.
â
He hated Cyrus to the core, and the feeling was blatantly mutual.
Nathaniel knew that he was being unreasonably possessive when he had no right to be, but he simply couldnât stomach the idea of Lucinda staying over at Cyrusâ house.
âLet me go.
â
Lucinda took another step forward, even as Nathaniel tightened his grip on her.
As it was, he ended up getting dragged on his knees.
âDonât go! Iâm sorry.
I shouldnât have hurt you.
I wonât do it again, so⦠Donât go to Cyrus.
