Lucinda, on the other hand, glanced coldly at him as he knelt at her feet.
âYou already knew you couldnât kill me.
Why did you even try?â
Nathaniel only pursed his lips and said nothing.
âIs it because you want to avenge Vivien, or do you really believe that I killed Logan?â
He still kept silent and just focused on her wound.
Lucinda studied him for a while and decided to deduce things for herself.
âLogan was already suffering from cancer around the time he died.
Iâm not the type to waste my efforts getting rid of an old man who was bound to die, anyway.
You know this, too.
That means that you acted for Vivienâs sake, isnât that right?â
Still, Nathaniel didnât say anything.
Lucinda leaned over and tipped his chin upward with her uninjured hand, forcing him to meet her eyes.
âYou should know me well by now.
Vivien might feel gratified to know that I got hurt, but youâre the one who has to pay the ultimate price.
Do you think this tiny scratch is worth the punishment youâre about to get?â
Nathaniel practically winced at the words, âpay the priceâ.
âItâs not worth it at all,â he muttered.
âI regret it.
â
Lucinda ducked her head and stared into his eyes.
She noticed then that they were a little red at the corners, and they held nothing but sincerity.
Was it because he felt guilty for her injury?
Or was he just a damn good actor?
Lucinda narrowed her eyes; then her gaze drifted over to his swollen right cheek.
âThis is good, now that both of your cheeks are swollen, your face is symmetrical.
â
She paused before adding, âDo you remember that time when you cornered me in the ladiesâ room? I told you then that one day, I would make you kneel at my feet.
I have to admit, I wasnât expecting that day to come so soon.
â
Nathaniel bristled at her teasing tone.
He shrugged away from her hold and went back to tending to her wound.
He was ever so gentle with her, and he bandaged her pretty well, too.
âYou are the noble heir of the Roberts family,â Lucinda mused out loud.
âYou must have been spoiled since childhood, right? Iâm sure Amanda was heartbroken every time you got hurt.
How come youâre so good at bandaging people up?â
Nathanielâs hands paused.
