Chapter 401:
Rhys straightened immediately, their eyes locking.
His expression softened, and a spark of light danced in his gaze as his Adamâs apple moved again.
A firm âYesâ came from him.
He added, âA relationship that lasts forever.â
Harlee turned her face away, not responding. Who could predict whether they would stay together forever or not? She preferred to live in the moment.
Harlee wrapped her arms around Rhysâ neck, her lips brushing against his in a brief kiss. It was gentle, just as she had envisioned. Tonya had always said that kissing was wonderful, and now Harlee wanted to experience it herself.
Suddenly, a large hand cradled the back of Harleeâs head, and Rhys gently leaned down, kissing her with the tenderness one might use to handle a delicate treasure.
Harlee, in turn, took the initiative, savoring the sweetness of the moment. Since she had feelings for him and knew they would eventually kiss, why not make it today?
When Tonya returned, she found Harlee and Rhys so entwined that they seemed to be one. While she assumed Harlee was simply taking care of Rhys due to his condition, she couldnât shake the feeling that their dynamic resembled that of a couple. She quickly dismissed the thought.
How could they possibly become an item just after sheâd stepped out for a brief moment?
Tonya approached Rhys and Harlee slowly, noticing the uncharacteristic warmth in their expressions. She scratched her head, baffled.
Had her antidote failed, or was there some new side effect?
âIs there any danger?â Harlee asked.

Tonya frowned.
âNot really, but the path ahead is challenging. Thereâs a section thatâs nearly impossible to pass. We might need twice the time.â
Harlee nodded gently.
âThatâs fine.
He needs to rest, so we can take it slow.â
Tonya stood there, stunned. Since when had the usually impatient Harlee been willing to slow down? It couldnât just be because Rhys helped Harlee fend off the arrow-poison frog, could it? Something was off. The affectionate atmosphere between them was beginning to remind her of her own relationship with Ritchie.
Could it be that they had become an item?
Tonya quickly shook the thought away.
Even if she dated ten men, Harlee might not consider any of them. She shrugged it off.
The daylight was fading.
Harlee didnât linger, wrapping her arm around Rhysâ waist and supporting him as they approached the river.
âLetâs cross the river,â she said, and the three of them began wading through the water. Tonya led the way.
After a few more hours, night had fallen, and the dense rainforest canopy plunged them into darkness. The calls of nocturnal creatures filled the air.
Harlee guided them to a cave where she had stayed before, intending to rest there for the night.
Inside, Rhys settled by the firewood, expertly starting a fire. The once damp and cold cave gradually filled with a hint of warmth. It was no longer unbearably cold.
