Chapter 374:
âReally?â Barbaraâs face brightened with mock hope.
She asked cautiously, âIs someone backing us from behind the scenes?â
Adamsonâs brow furrowed slightly.
Barbara quickly interjected, âA secret, is it? I wonât ask. The safety of our family is what matters most.â
Instantly, Adamsonâs demeanor softened.
He opened his arms, and Barbara assisted him with his coat.
Hand in hand, they proceeded toward their bedroom.
Along the way, Adamson leaned close and whispered, âItâs one of my fatherâs old comrades whoâs helping us.
He warned me that a powerful figure is targeting our family.â
Barbaraâs heart seized for a moment, her breath catching.
Did Adamson suspect that she and Freyja were manipulating things from behind the scenes? His unusual calmness didnât seem to fit his typical behavior. Perhaps the influence of Ritchie was more significant than expected, and Adamsonâs father had only identified the existence of a powerful enemy, not their identities.
Once Barbara pieced this together, her panic subsided, and she regained her composure. She didnât want Adamson to suspect anything was wrong, so she pretended to feel unwell.
Clutching her chest, she said with difficulty, âI havenât been sleeping well lately. My heart keeps skipping beats. I need Freyja to accompany me to the hospital tomorrow.â

âOh, dear, you must take better care of yourself. Iâll visit the hospital with you,â Adamson responded with evident concern.
âBut what about that powerful figureâ¦?â
Adamson reassured her, âEven my father doesnât know who this powerful figure is. Since Iâve been able to return to Baythorn, as long as we keep a low profile, we should be safe.â
This experience had enlightened Adamson.
His wife was far more loyal than those women outside who were merely after his wealth.
When Barbara noticed the love in Adamsonâs eyes, she felt a surge of disgust. She swallowed hard, fighting the urge to vomit right in his face.
Now that she had gleaned the information she needed, there was no reason to ask further. She excused herself to retire to her bedroom, needing to lie down. She sent Adamson away to reconnect with his old allies, knowing that staying any longer in the same room with him might risk exposing her true feelings.
The following day, Barbara scheduled a meeting with Ritchie. Upon her arrival at the hotel, she found Ritchie dining with Harlee.
Barbara was permitted entry and noticed Ritchie deeply focused on serving Harlee, seemingly neglecting his own food and drink.
Once again, Barbara witnessed Harleeâs significant influence. Throughout her dealings with Ritchie, it was clear that he could easily become a key player among the cityâs power brokers if he chose not to maintain a low profile. Yet, he treated Harlee with unmistakable respect. It was evident just how formidable Harlee truly was.
Barbara approached with grace, maintaining a respectful demeanor.
âMiss Sanderson, Mr. Diaz, I trust Iâm not disturbing your lunch?â
