Chapter 170:
Before securing Rhysâs affection, she needed to keep Wade as her fallback plan.
âMy foot really hurts, and my chin tooâ¦â Lindsay fabricated her story effortlessly. She told Wade she had gone to have a meal with Rhys and claimed that when she arrived, Rhys was with another woman who thought Lindsay was there to steal her man. The woman pushed her when Rhys wasnât looking.
âWhat?â Wadeâs anger flared.
âShe pushed you? Who is this woman? Iâll make sure she regrets it!â
Waving her hand dismissively, Lindsay replied, âThat womanâs name seemed to be Harlee. Wade, please donât confront her. Iâm worried she might harm you.â
As expected, hearing this only fueled Wadeâs anger, and he vowed to take care of Harlee. Lindsay praised him for his concern, then reached out for him to carry her to the car.
The receptionist, initially puzzled by their exchange, was soon distracted by Ablett and missed the critical details.
Saturday arrived.
At eight in the morning, Harlee was awakened by Skyla.
âHarlee, I have something important to tell you.â
Having stayed up late, Harlee was groggy, barely keeping her eyes open as she responded. Skyla shared that in a few days, the Sanderson family would host a reunion banquet for Harlee, and all five of Harleeâs older brothers were expected.
âBut thereâs an epidemic in Frousal, and Fleming, your third brother, is there helping with vaccine research. Iâm not sure if he can make it.
As for Clint, your fourth brother, he doesnât even know youâre back.

Heâs been filming in the mountains with no signal, and I havenât been able to reach him in almost six months.â
With her eyelids heavy, Harlee replied, âItâs fine. They can come back when theyâre free.â
Seeing how sleepy Harlee was, Skyla felt sympathy.
âAlright, you go back to sleep. I wonât bother you.â
Harlee typically woke up at five for a jog, so Skyla had assumed Harlee was already awake. She hadnât expected Harlee to be so overwhelmingly tired.
âItâs okay. Keep talking. Iâm listening,â Harlee murmured.
Skyla hesitated and then said softly, âIâm thinking of announcing your engagement at the banquet.â
âWhat?â Harlee was fully alert now.
Skyla began to explain, âWhen I was expecting you, Belinda and I made a deal that if I had a daughter, our families would unite through marriage.â
Harlee barely heard the rest of Skylaâs words. If reconnecting with her biological parents meant giving up her freedom to marry, sheâd rather remain alone, without caring about any family ties.
Seeing the discomfort in Harleeâs expression, Skyla hurried to clarify, âHarlee, Iâm not pushing you into an arranged marriage. I just believe the Green familyâs son would be a good fit for you. If you donât like this engagement, we can cancel it.â
Harlee paused. The Green familyâs son? Could that be Rhys? If it was Rhys, that wasnât so bad. She would prefer him over other potential suitors. She glanced down and casually asked, âThe Green family? The prominent one among the four great families?â
Skyla was momentarily taken aback, and then her eyes sparkled.
âYes, the sole heir of the Green family, Rhys. I think heâs an excellent match for you, and thatâs why I agreed with Belinda.â
