Chapter 1413:
Lucius, though boiling with rage, still held back. Harleeâs baby seemed to be the one thread that kept her from facing the full force of his wrath. She could tell that if not for the pregnancy, Lucius might have done far worse than just standing there, seething.
Despite the risk, Harlee had no choice but to play this hand. She needed to know how best to navigate her situation. Should she use Nicola as leverage over Lucius, or should she fall in line and tread carefully to keep him from snapping? Now, the answer was clear. To handle Lucius, she had to maintain a delicate balanceâpress him, but not too hard; challenge him, but always give him something to hold on to.
As Harlee was carried upstairs, her vision obscured by the blindfold, she couldnât help but mutter to herself, âNicola, Iâm sorry. I donât have any other choice. For the sake of my baby, Iâll have to spin some lies about you.â
Since that harrowing night in the Fletcher familyâs maze, Harlee had learned to tread carefully, always prioritizing her babyâs safety above all else. She had to think ten steps ahead, avoiding any move that might endanger both her and her baby. If Rhys had been sure he could get her out without any harm to her or the baby, she wouldnât have hesitated to leave.
But Rhys couldnât guarantee that. So, staying behind was her only option, the best way to ensure her survival. In the meantime, she would endeavor to gather information on Nolaâto prevent Rhys from overburdening himself with the task of rescuing her, knowing the risks involved.
Harlee was led to a room, her mind still in a fog, the blindfold on her head making it impossible to see. Yet, she could still hear everythingâthe faint rustling of steps, the soft creak of doors, the hushed whispers that hinted at a tense atmosphere.
Just when she felt her nerves starting to unravel, her blindfold was yanked off. And there, standing in front of her, was Luciusâlooking freshly cleaned but still an embodiment of rage. He held a phone in his hand, his jaw clenched so tight that she could almost hear his teeth grinding. His eyes burned with a ferocity that sent a shiver down her spine.
âCall Lonnie. I want to know everything about Nicola!â Lucius growled, his teeth grinding with barely contained fury.
âThere is no need. You can ask me anything. I am fully informed about Nicola. Contacting my father will only let Rhys know that Iâm in your hands,â Harlee warned, keeping a close eye on Lucius.
Upon hearing this, Luciusâ face darkened. Rhys would move heaven and earth for Harlee. If Rhys knew she was in his hands, there would be no stopping him. Rhys would bring an army to storm in. It wouldnât be worth it.
âFine, Iâll agree to your terms,â Lucius said, a smirk tugging at his lips, filled with disdain.
âBut only if you tell me everything. Otherwise, the poison could end you and your child in an instant.â
The poison, which Nola had brought back from overseas a few years ago, was supposed to be a secret weapon for extracting information from enemies. Lucius had used it to gain control over Baythom and expand his power.
With a slow, deliberate motion, Lucius pulled a small medicine box from his pocket. It was the same one Harlee had taken a pill from earlier. He opened it, took out another pill, and said, âTake this. It will help you feel better, enough to spill everything about Nicola.â
Harlee eyed the pill, hesitant to take it. She had just swallowed one in the basement. If she took another so soon, it could cause trouble.
Lucius said coldly, âDonât worry. I wonât claim your life yet. Even if I want to end you, Iâll just hand you over to Nola. The poison I gave you requires one alleviating pill every day. You can take more throughout the day to regain some strength. But if you go without it for a full day, your heart will race and youâll suffocate to death.â
Harlee stood still for a few seconds, weighing her options. In the end, she chose to trust him. She popped the pill in her mouth and swallowed it dryly before asking, âWhat do you want to know about Nicola?â
Lucius didnât rush. He leaned back with a slow smile, his tone calculated.
âFirst, take me to Nicolaâs grave and the place where she lived before she died. Iâll ask my questions at her tomb.â
Harlee fell silent. Nicolaâs tomb was on T&H Island. She had set up a few things there, and if she wasnât careful, Lucius might do even more crazy things.
