Chapter 1414:
Lucius watched her patiently, waiting for her to respond. At her silence, he added, âBefore I learn everything about Nicola, Iâll give you the three alleviating pills every day to keep you in decent shape. Once itâs done, Iâll give you the antidote and set you free.â
After swallowing the pill, Harlee already felt the change. Her body no longer felt like it was running on empty. She could breathe and walk without struggling.
âArenât you just trying to find out everything about Nicola?â she asked, suspicious.
âWhy the need to visit her tomb?â Harlee narrowed her eyes, a flicker of suspicion crossing her features. For reasons she couldnât quite pinpoint, she always felt there was something about Luciusâ intentions that didnât quite add up. Something hidden behind the mask of his actions, particularly when heâd been changing clothes earlier. Could he have reached out to Nola? Was this all part of Nolaâs plan? But if Nola could send Tania to the island, Nola must have known that Nicolaâs tombstone was there, right?
An idea struck Harlee, sharp as a knife, and she quickly plastered on a look of surprise and anger.
âHow is that possible? You really donât know where Nicolaâs tombstone is? Didnât Nola mention it to you?â She had fumbled for a breakthrough until it presented itself.
âNola?â Lucius stood frozen, his mind a whirlwind of confusion. How could Nola possibly know where Nicolaâs tombstone was? Nola didnât even know Nicola. Wait a minuteâ¦
Harlee glanced at him, her gaze sharp.

âDidnât Nola tell you?â
Luciusâ eyes flashed with suspicion.
âAre you trying to drive a wedge between us?â He soon caught on, his voice laced with contempt.
âYou never give up, do you? Even now, in this situation, youâre still trying to drive us apart. I told you, you wonât get a word about Nola from me. So, stop wasting your time!â
Harlee remained unfazed, her face a mask of indifference.
âThatâs right. I do want to know about Nola, but not for the reasons you think. I just want to deal with her. However, Iâm not in the mood to drive a wedge now, and I donât want to know how deep your relationship is!â
Luciusâ suspicion grew.
âWhy should I trust you?â
âThink about Tania,â Harlee said calmly, her voice steady.
âThe one Nola sent to watch over me? The first time we crossed paths was by Nicolaâs tombstone. Do you really think Nola doesnât know about it?â
Harlee moved to sit on the sofa, her posture relaxed despite the tension. Standing too long caused her back to ache. Her question had been deliberate. She knew how paranoid Lucius was, and if he thought too much, his suspicions would only grow. If Nola could orchestrate Taniaâs arrival on that deserted island, then she had to know everything about the island, Nicolaâs tombstone included. But Nola hadnât said a word. What did that mean? It meant Nola was playing Lucius like a pawn, using him to strike at Harleeâs backerâthe Green family.
Luciusâ face remained unreadable, but Harlee knew her little game had hit the mark. She could see the anger brewing within him.
As expected, Lucius was enraged. His expression was emotionless, but from what she knew of him, her scheme to foment dissension had been successful.
âI can take you to Nicolaâs tomb and show you the place where she lived before. Hold on, though,â Harlee added, her tone steely.
âI need to make something crystal clear. That islandâs my peopleâs turf now. If youâre game to go, then you need to understand the risks that come with it. Thereâs no turning back once you step foot there.â
Lucius let out a loud, almost manic laugh.
âRisks? Do you really think Iâm worried about that? Iâm already living on borrowed time. If it werenât for wanting to avenge Nicola, I would have been gone with her decades ago!â
