Thereâs something almost soothing about pawing through the personal records of the people you think you can trust. Iâve looked under every single stone, pebble and everything in between and not one of the people that frequent the estate have a connection to anyone within the Russo organization. Which leaves us at square one.
How could they have known the nickname I call Wynter if someone hadnât told them?
I sigh and close the lid of the laptop, at least the task allowed me to calm down, and it would have given Wynter time to do the same. I stand from where Iâm sitting on the lounge and head up the stairs in search for her, only to meet the eyes of a very panicked Storm as he rushes down the hallway.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask.
âWynterâs gone. She talked her way out of the estate and then slipped her security. I have no fucking idea where she is.â Iâve never heard him sound so worried, even in the midst of chaos Storm is calm, but at the idea of his sister being missing, heâs panicking.
âWhat do you mean, she talked her way out?â I growl. âI explicitly told everyone working at the gate that she is not to leave this estate, or even go near the gate for that matter. Why the fuck would they let her out?â
âShe told Carl I said it was okay, and then I missed a call from him while I was talking to Tommy.â He drags his hands through his hair roughly. âFuck,â he shouts.
Iâm back at my laptop a moment later, tapping into the trackers I have in her phone, handbag and every pair of shoes she owns. When I placed them there it was with the intention to only use them in moments such as these, but Iâm guilty of checking them from time to time just to keep tabs on her.
âWhat are you doing?â Storm asks as he crosses the room to sit beside me.
âTracking her.â
âYou put trackers on my sister?â He raises an eyebrow.
I nod. âDonât waste your breath, my foresight might save her life.â
Storm shakes his head and huffs out a laugh. âIf you were anyone else, I would kick your ass for stalking my sister.â
I roll my eyes and focus on the map in front of me. âSheâs at Amberâs.â
âIs that one of her friends? Iâve never heard her talk about a Amber.â
âNo, itâs a bar she goes to sometimes.â I let out a breath. If sheâs there sheâs probably safe. Iâve been in there a few times to make sure it was safe for her, and the place has decent security and the owner seems to have taken a shine to Wynter from the first time they met.
âIâll grab my stuff and come with you.â Storm stands and starts toward the stairs.
âItâs fine. Iâll go on my own.â I barely stop myself from telling him he shouldnât come unless he wants to see me spank his sister so hard she wonât sit for a week for pulling a stunt like this.
Storm laughs. âLord help her.â
Half an hour later, Steve is pulling up to the curb outside Amberâs. This place has been around since the eighties and I understand why Wynter loves it so much. Itâs retro but in a classy way, the dark brick building fits seamlessly with the apartment buildings on this street, and the inside is warm and homely.
âI wonât be long,â I tell my driver. I didnât want to bring anyone along, but Storm insisted. It should only take a few moments to throw her over my shoulder and cart her back to the estate to tie her to the bed where she wonât be able to escape again. Iâm barely controlling the anger simmering under my skin. How could she be so fucking stupid. My entire family threatened her yesterday, at her parentsâ funeral who they murdered, and she thinks itâs a great idea to gallivant around the city unprotected?
I push the doors open but the moment my eyes connect with Wynter Iâm stopped in my tracks. Sheâs sitting at a small table on the other side of the bar, her head thrown back laughing at something the guy sheâs with said. Iâve never seen her with him before, his thick beard and long hair donât ring any bells, but the way he reaches across the table to brush the hair out of her face makes me want to snap his arm in half. No one touches what belongs to me.
But instead I wait. I take a seat at the far end of the bar, order a drink and watch as my woman laughs and flirts with this nameless man. I havenât seen her smile like this since the night before I left.
She takes a sip of whatever sheâs drinking as the guy tells her a story animatedly, and when she laughs she almost spits her drink across the table. Itâs all I can do to drag my eyes away from Wynter and focus on the man who has captured her attention.
She hasnât shown much interest in men since I ran off the first few when she came home from college. It didnât take much, a few well-placed threats, and they were giving up the best thing to happen to them just the same as I did.
Nothing Iâve ever done was as contradictory as that. I couldnât have her so no one could. But the idea of another man with his hands on Wynter made me homicidal, and that was a mess I didnât want to bring down on the Saint James family.
The guy stands and quickly squeezes her shoulder as he disappears down the hallway behind the bar. Itâs my time to get her the fuck out of here. I throw a wad of cash on the bar to pay for our drinks and a tip for the scene Iâm about to cause before crossing the bar and sitting in the seat the guy left vacant.
âDove,â I growl.
Wynterâs eyes widen as she stares at me blankly. âHow the fuck did you find me?â
âI put trackers on all your shit years ago,â I tell her honestly. âWorked out pretty well for me today when your brother was losing his mind with fucking worry. How could you do this?â My words are harsh, but she needs to understand how angry we are. What sheâs done is stupid, irresponsible, and more than anything, selfish, and thatâs something Iâve never known Wynter to be.
Her face pales as she breaks eye contact in favor of staring at her drink. âI donât have to justify anything to you. And what the fuck do you mean you put trackers on me?â
âWhen I wasnât around to protect you, I needed to know you were safe.â Thereâs more to it than that, but she never needs to know how deep my obsession with her runs.
âYouâre insane.â
âNo, whatâs insane is you losing your security when weâre in the middle of a war. You remember that Elijah threatened you yesterday, right? You havenât forgotten that the most psychotic person weâve ever met might come after you?â
âWhatâs your point?â She takes a long drink and I canât help but stare as she swallows. Fuck, even when Iâm furious with her sheâs sexy as hell.
I sigh. âYou have two options here, Wynter, and I suggest you think long and hard about which one youâre going to take. Option one, you walk your ass out of here and get in the car without any arguments, and I might not lock you in your room until the war is over. Or, option two and my personal favorite, you continue being a brat, I throw you over my shoulder, take you home and spank you so hard and for so long you canât sit for a week, before locking you up in an ivory tower where I know youâre safe and nothing can hurt you.â I shrug. âYour choice.â
âYou canât do that,â she breathes, but thereâs something behind her eyes I canât place.
I place both hands on the table and stand until Iâm towering over both the table and Wynter. âI most definitely can, Wynter, and after this stunt your brothers wonât fight me on it.â
Wynter leans back in her chair and stares at me for a few moments. âFine.â She sighs and finishes her drink before digging around in her purse.
âIâve already paid,â I tell her.
âOh, I know. Iâm leaving Jordan my number.â She flashes me a smile as she scrawls something on a piece of paper.
Doesnât she know when you play with the devil you can expect to be burned?
I take a deep breath to stamp down the anger, even if it is only for a few seconds to get her out of here and then I throw her over my shoulder without a second thought and cart her toward the door, but only after Iâve picked the piece of paper up and shoved it in my pocket. Thereâs no way another man is having my womanâs number.
âEverett, put me down,â Wynter squeals.
âNo.â I slap my hand down on her ass and she jolts immediately.
âShould I call your brothers, Wynter?â the bartender asks.
She sighs. âNo, thank you Chad. Unfortunately, my brothers sent this asshole to collect me. Tell Jordan I really enjoyed speaking to him.â
Before Chad can reply, weâre out the door and Iâm carefully placing her into the back of the car. I should have checked the street when I walked out, itâs what Iâve been trained to do, but Wynter is distracting as hell. She makes everything else in my mind disappear until itâs just her sitting in the center of my world.
âWhat the fuck? You said if I agreed I could walk myself out?â she hisses.
âThat was before you tried to give another man your phone number.â I move toward her until my face is only a breath from hers. âYou. Are. Mine.â
âNo, Iâm not.â Wynter crosses her arms across her chest in a defensive gesture.
âYes, you are, dove. You were mine the first time we met, and mine every day that we were best friends, and every time I stole a kiss, or you allowed me to touch you, you became a little more mine. But it was when you trusted me with your heart and your body that you should have known you would never belong to anyone else again, Wynter.â
âYou left me.â Her voice wavers as her eyes turn glassy with tears. âYou lost the right to be my anything when you left. And you can claim Iâve always been yours all you want, but that doesnât make it true, Everett.â
âOh, but it does, little dove. Now be a good girl and behave on the way home and maybe Iâll go easy on you for your punishment.â I smirk. Thatâs not happening, but if it will make her sit still, itâs worth the little white lie.
