Chapter 41
Conflicting Advice
âAden, Dinner,â called my mother.
I closed my English book and tossed it on the bed. The yellow envelope was sticking out of my bookbag. For once, I was excited to give my parents something from my teacher. I pulled it out, and the ticket fell on the floor. Kneeling down, I picked it up and scanned the information. I could never go to this, but it still made me anxious. If I went, there was a possibility Chris had something planned, but if I didnât, he might just use it as an excuse to beat me up anyways.
âAden,â called my mom.
âComing.â I shoved the ticket into the bottom of my bag and grabbed the envelope.
Downstairs, my parents were waiting in the kitchen, talking about their days.
âWhatâs that, Aden?â asked my mother as she dried her hands.
âItâs from Mr. Phillips.â
They both forced a smile as my father took it from me. My mother hurried to his side. He took out the papers, and their smiles were no longer forced. I felt proud of myself, damn proud.
âThe test is in the back.â
My dad pulled it out.
âOh, Aden,â said my mother. She quickly pulled me into a hug. âYouâre doing so well. See,â she wagged her finger at me. âAll you needed was a little help, and youâre right up there with everyone else.â
My father patted my shoulder. âIâm proud of you. I appreciate you working hard to get your grade up.â He put the envelope on the counter.
âThanks.â
Squeezing me to her side, my mother kissed my cheek. âWell, letâs eat.â
We sat down and passed around the platter with the roast. The conversation was the usual topics, but it didnât bug me as much today.
âAden.â
âHmmmâ¦â I glanced at my father.
âYour phone and laptop are on my dresser. You can have them back.â
âReally?â I exclaimed.
âDo not be texting all hours of the night?â He pointed his fork at me. âIf your grades go down, and Iâll be taking it back.â
âThey wonât, I promise.â I jumped up.
âAden,â said my mother as she cut her meat.
I stopped and watched her eyes go to my plate. I sat back down. âI guess I should finish eating first.â
âThank you,â she said happily.

Homework was done. I shoved everything back in my book bag. I checked the clock. Only nine. Yes! My father couldnât complain about me having a long conversation with Titus.
I opened my phone to find all my old contacts gone. Only my parents and some relatives remained. It was kind of a relief that they were blocked. One was new though. Smiling, I pressed Titusâs name.
It started to ring. I really hoped he wasnât out and about doing werewolf things. He had been demoted for a month. He should have his rank back by the end of this week.
âHello?â
I froze. This didnât sound like Titus. âHi, this is Aden.â
âOh, Aden,â laughed the man on the other side. âThis is Darius.â
âHi,â I said awkwardly. âIs your brother around?â
âHeâs moping around the cave somewhere.â
âDid something happen?â I chewed on my bottom lip.
âNope, just someone didnât call the moment three weeks were over, or some bullshit like that. The middle rank think has made him rather moody lately.â
âHmmmâ¦â I moved to my bed and sat down crosslegged against the wall. âCould you get him for me?â
âNo need. I can smell him coming this way.â
âWhat are you doing on my phone!â yelled a voice that was clearly Titus.
âI came by to tell you demotions is over. Hunting part in the morning, oh and Aden called.â
âGive it to me!â
I could hear the two struggling and Darius laughing through the whole thing. Being an only child really wasnât that bad sometimes.
âIâm going to bite your arm off, if you donât give it to me now!â
âDo you hear that, Aden,â teased Darius. âYouâre dating a bit of an asshole.â
âHmmmâ¦â I muttered unimpressed. âAre you two done yet?â
âDarius,â growled Titus.
âOh calm down,â muttered Darius. âShift already. Youâll end up beak the phone in that form.â
âGive it to me, then.â
âFine, catch.â
I had to hold the phone away from my ear as I heard a loud crackling sound.
âYou are so annoying,â hissed Titus. âGet out of my room, and stop messing with my things.â
âWhatever,â said a quieter Dariusâs voice. âTomorrow morning. Donât give me the Iâm tired excuse either.â
âGet out!â
I heard my boyfriends heavy breathing and laughed to myself. Darius really did know every button and switch to push and pull to get a reaction out of Titus.
âAden?â
âAre you calmed down now?â I teased.
âYeah,â he mumbled. âSorry about that.â
âItâs fine. Iâve met Darius. I know what heâs like.â
âA jerk,â muttered Titus. âA grade A jerk.â
I laughed and relaxed. âHowâs middle rank life?â
âIt sucks. Doesnât help, I feel like a clumsy giant compared to everyone else.â
âHow so?â
âSomeone my size was not meant to work in cramped conditions. When I have to clean out the eating chamber, I just feel like Iâm about to crush someone and make a bigger mess than what we started with.â
âYou poor thing. Itâs so hard to be over six feet.â
â6â5, so yes it is,â he chuckled. âI missed you.â
âI missed you too.Sorry about not calling sooner. My dad didnât give back my phone until today. I got a B on my math test.â
âThatâs great, Aden. Howâs the rest of school? Chris isnât trying anything else, right?â
I ran my hand under my shirt to touch my scar. âHeâs left me alone since I talked to the principal. But today heâ¦â I sighed.
âWhat happened?â he asked a little heated.
âHe didnât hurt me, so donât freak out.â I glanced at my bookbag on the floor. âHe gave me this ticket to a concert on Saturday.â I groaned. âI just donât know what to make of it.â
âAt Base Acid?â
âYeah. Youâve been there?â
âWith Darius a couple times,â he took a deep breath. âLook Aden, I donât think you should go.â
âYeah, me too. Iâm just worried itâll make him mad.â I rubbed my forehead. âI should have said I couldnât go and never took it from him.â
âWhy did you?â
âI panicked, Titus,â I snapped. âWhen Chris and all his stupid friends are staring at you, you do things without thinking.â
He laughed. âTrue. Iâd prefer if you didnât go, though.â
âYeah,â I breathed.
âInstead you should spend all Saturday night talking to me.â
I smiled. âThat does sound like the better option.â
âOf course itâs a better option,â he stated. âItâs me.â
I scoffed at him. âMaybe I will go to the concert.â
âAden,â he whined. âI was joking.â
âI know.â I laid down as my mind wandered back to the conversation I had with my father a couple weeks ago. It as my first night to hear him again. I didnât want to deal with a pissed off Titus. At the same time, I wanted to know the truth about where I would stand as a werewolf.
âAden?â
âYeah?â
âIs something wrong?â
âNo,â I whispered. âIâm just really happy to hear your voice again.â
âMe too. I love you.â
I smiled. âI love you too.â
***
âAlright,â said Comrade. âLetâs see what Iâm up against for this week.â
I put my bookbag on the table.
âRumour has it, youâre only coming Saturdays now, so I have to take on a another student next week. Did my pep talk piss you off that bad, Aden?â
âNo,â I muttered, rolling my eyes. âIâm caught up now, so I just need help with homework and studying for tests.â
âOh yeah,â he smiled at me. âSomeones got a B on the last one.â
I sucked in my lips. âYeah, so I donât need your help as much.â
âMy god,â he pretend to be hurts. âThanks a lot.â
I shrugged and took out my book.
âWhat this?â Comrade picked up the ticket for tonight. âYouâre going too. Ricky is taking me.â
Taking the ticket back from him, I tossed it into my bag. âNo. Someone gave it to me. I havenât even asked my mom if I can go, and sheâll say no. I already know.â
âBase Acid isnât a satanic gathering,â he groaned.
âWell my mother thinks so,â I opened my notebook. âThatâs where you go to get high, and come home with either a tattoo or a piercing.â
Comrade slumped over and tapped his pen on the table. âIâve been many times, and I have neither.â
âDrugs?â I glanced over at him.
âOne time, Aden. One time, I smoke some weed.â He sat up in his chair. âI was stupid and trying to impress a guy.â
âDid it work?â
His shoulder dropped. âNo, we dated a week, and he cheated on me within that same week.â He put his elbows on the table and rest his head in his palms. âHe was on other stuff, though, so his brain was fried. He probably didnât even remember we were dating. He was really cute.â
I smiled. âAnd this is why, my mother will not be letting me go. Besides, Iâm taken.â
âIâm not telling you to go to hook up with someone. As your tutor and guidance counselor, that would be highly irresponsible.â
Raising an eyebrow, I stared at him unimpressed. âGood to know youâre a guidance counselor now.â
âWatch it.â He smacked my arm with a notebook, before leaning back in his seat. âAnyways,â he breathed. âI think you should go. Rickyâs cousins coming too with his friends, and heâs gay.â
âSo what,â I exclaimed. âIâm taken.â
âIâm guessing your boyfriends isnât going to the same high school, right?â
âNope.â
âSo why not make a friend that knows how bad high school sucks. You can complain about the homophobes together. I had a friend like that growing up.â
âYouâre not that much older than me,â I shot back.
âOld enough to teach lazy high school students how to count,â he replied adding a little sass.
âWhatever,â I sunk down in my chair. âChris gave it to me. The guy who told the school I was gay.â
âOh.â Comrade thought for a moment. âThat does make things a little iffy. Well, if you come, Iâll be there, and Ricky on the football team at our University. There are no gay commits permitted around that guy. So if youâre worried about Chris harassing you, Ricky isnât afraid to get in a homophobeâs face. Heâs done it for me tons of time, and I can also introduce you to Kyle.â He flashed me a smile with a shrug. âBut itâs up to you.â
âIâll think about it.â
âSounds good. You have my number, so send me a text if you need anything.â Comrade pulled over my book and looked at the lesson. âSolving for x and y, I love this sections.â
I groaned and laid my face on the table. I wonât never understand his fascination with math.
