Chapter 23
Doors Remain Open
âUm, Mrs. Perriâ¦â laughed Titus nervously, shifting his weight. âWe⦠we were.â He sucked in his lips. âWe werenât doing anything tooâ¦â
âHmmm, I see.â She looked Titus in the eyes.
âOh my god.â I hid my face.
âFrom now on, the door will remain open, boys. Boyfriend or girlfriend the rules are the same.â She patted my knees. âNow, I made you both a sandwich, and I expected them to be eaten.â She stood and returned to the kitchen.
Leaning back into the cushion, I laid the cool waterbottle on my eyes.
âFeeling better.â
âNo.â I fell over against his shoulder. âI never been so embarrassed. My mom should never know a thing about that kind of stuff.â
âSheâs okay with it though. You and me.â He put his arm around my shoulder and squeezed me against him. âIt went pretty well. Better than I thought actually.â
I took a deep breath. âI wasnât too worried about how my mom would react, but Iâm terrified of what my dad is going to do.â
Titus nodded. âMaybe itâll be about the same.â
Sitting up, I raised an eyebrow. âFor me, not you.â I climbed off the couch and wandered to the kitchen.
He chased after me. âWhat do you mean? Was he weird with your girlfriends?â He looked like a scared pup as he waited for me to answer.
âBoys,â called my mother, setting our plates on the table. âSit, we still have things to talk about.â
âAden?â whined Titus, following close behind me. âTell me.â
âNot now,â I muttered.
We all sat down and started to eat, accepted for Titus. His head was on the table, and he looked miserable. âHeâs going to kill me.â
âDepends,â said my mother, âon how far youâve gone.â
I choked on my sandwich. Quickly taking a drink, I forced it down.
She took of a sip of her drink. âThat bad,â sighed my mother. âAden, Iâm fine with you being gay.â She took a deep breath. âIf it makes you happy, then I have no issues with it. But you know what your father and I expected from you.â
I bit my lip. âDad, are we...â
She reached over and patted my hand. âFor now, we wonât tell him. Iâll ease him into the idea a little before we do. Donât worry though, Aden, your father will always love you. Titus, Iâm not so sure.â
âWhat?â said Titus panicked. âItâs going to be bad, isnât it?â
She picked at the edge of her sandwich. âLike I said, it depends what has been going on in that room.â Her eyes flashed up for a moment. âAnything slightly sexually related, my husband is not going to okay with. Aden knows this.â She narrowed her eyes at me. âWeâve discussed this matter on multiple occasion.â
My face was blaring with heat. âWe didnât,â I whispered.
âYeah, Mrs. Perri. Weâve havenât. Just kissed and, andâ¦.â Titus sighed and sunk into his chair.
She held up her hand. âI donât need the details. Just know, girlfriends rules transfer over to boyfriends.â
âIâm sorry,â I said hopefully.
âBy how guilty you both look, Iâd say you broke them already.â She leaned against the armrest on her chair. âAnd weâll leave it at that. So,â my mom took a deep breath. âDoors remain open at all times. No intense kissing, no touching particular area.â She looked between us. âDonât care that itâs the same body part, in this house itâs not allowed.â
âOh my god,â I covered my face. âMom.â
âAden, weâre making this clear now, so there'll be no questions about boundaries later. Titus, keep those hands where I can see them.â
He lifted his out from under the table and gave her a nervous smile.
âSee easy enough. When your father is home, let keep touching to a minimum until we work things out. Heaven forbid he walks in on what I did. Quint wonât just leave.â She gave me a stern look. âI know my husband very well. Hurt his little boy, and you wonât be able to hide fast enough.â
âMom,â I whined. âStop it, please.â
âIâm just making things clear sweetheart.â She grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze. âIâve listen to him rant and rave for years. He may be discreet about it, but heâs not very fond of the majority of those girls youâve dated. But, because they were girls, he kept it to himself. Titus, you will not be so lucky.â
âIâm dead.â He banged his forehead on the table. âIâm so dead.â
âYouâll both be fine,â she said with a smile. âI knew Titus was a good match for you, didnât realize how good he would be though.â
I sucked in my lips to stop from smiling. âYeah, we are pretty good together.â

I sat with my mom in the backyard later that night. Titus had gone home, and my dad was inside watching the news. I took a drink of the lemonade my mother had brought me.
âHeâs a nice boy, Aden,â she whispered. âIâm happy you figured this out. Itâs a hard step to take. Though I wish you would have come to me sooner.â
âI should have.â I laid my head on her shoulder. âI was just scared. Iâve never heard you or dad say anything about gay people, I was just nervous that you would hate me for it.â
âI would never hate you, Aden. Youâre my world. But,â she looked at me from the corner of her eye.
âWhat?â I sat up.
âI still expected grandchildren.â
Laughing, I shook my head. âOf course.â
âIâm serious young man. This new development does not get you out of that responsibility. I need a grandbaby to spoil. Adoptions, surrogacy, doesnât matter what you choose, but I will be getting a grandbaby.â
I smiled and took another drink. âYouâll get your grandbaby, one day.â
She took a deep breath. âOne good thing came of this.â
âWhatâs that?â
âI donât have to worry about any accident happening.â
My mouth fell open. âMom.â
âAfter today, if Titus had been a girl, I would be worried.â
âMom stop.â I could tell I was blushing again from the heat radiating from my face. âI understand. Weâll cool it.â
âThank you, sweetheart.â She kissed my cheek before going back inside.
I remained outside, enjoying the night air. Today was over. Nothing was better than knowing I would never have to come out to my mother again. Coming out to my father, though, still terrified me.
