At all the schools, there was a time honoured tradition of standing on the balconies and flirting with people across the way and in lower courtyards. This was often a distraction for those attempting to finish homeworks. Although it was usually those who were in old relationships or recently out of one that complained.
Rolf was in his dorm studying while his roommates were messing around by the window. When Germany was mentioned in the history book, he looked up briefly at the flags over their beds, proudly showing off their homelands. But Switzerland and the Gold Coast didn't have the same shadow hanging over them as his own country did. With a sigh, he tried to keep reading.
Tried. Carlton and Leon were rather loudly introducing themselves to girls in the courtyard.
"The uniform suits you," Carlton half shouted.
"You should see how the blue complements her eyes," one of the girls replied.
"We'd love to." Leon grinned.
Rolf sighed and closed his book, leaning back in his chair. This wasn't working. Grabbing his books, he went to one of the small sitting rooms on the floor below. He was glad to see it was empty, and sat down on the sofa to keep reading. But as the minutes ticked by, he realized he'd read the same page three times without comprehending a word.
With a sigh, he put down the books and got up. Going to the window, he decided to let in some fresh air. He was surprised to see that the room had a small balcony. Below him was one of the walkways, quiet when class wasn't in session.
As he looked on, he saw a cute boy walking past with light brown hair and a dark complexion. He soon recognized him as the boy that sat next to him in Government.
He found himself calling out to him before he realized what he was doing. "Yosef!"
He looked up in surprise. "Oh, hello."
Embarrassed, he tried to think of something to say. "Where are you headed?"
"To the library. I just got out of singing lessons," he shouted up to him.
Rolf leaned on the railing. "Oh? What kind of singing do you do?"
He shrugged. "Jazz, modern. A little classical to help with range."
"I'm sure you have a lovely voice." An idea came to him, and he decided to run with it. "Hey, do you like chocolate?"
Yosef raised a brow. "Yes?"
"Why don't I bring some to class tomorrow? German chocolate is the best in the world," he smiled.
"What?! No way!"
Rolf looked back in surprise to see his roommate passing by the doorway.
"Swiss chocolate is better mate. I'll fight you on that," Leon smirked.
He laughed. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you're wrong." He winked and looked back to Yosef. "Care to try some?"
Smiling shyly, he shrugged again. "Why not?"
