Chapter 22: Chapter 22

The Moment to FightWords: 10555

Declan

Mei and I walked through the seemingly endless hallways underground for hours. Eventually, we found some places with lamps on the wall. They were ready to burn out any second, but they would have to do.

We turned down a small hallway with a single light on the wall. At the end of the hall, a small alcove was carved into the wall.

Mei flicked his head at the small cave and said, "You get some rest. I'll take first watch. Gotta be ready for anything down here, even demons."

I nodded my agreement and climbed into the alcove. It was only large enough to fit me inside so Mei had to sit next to it.

The ground was cracked in places and small rocks poked at my back as I laid down.

Mei shook me awake and held a finger to his lips. Instantly alert, I climbed out of the small cave and joined him. His white hair and gold eyes stood out starkly against the dim light of the hall.

He held up a hand for me to stay in place as he inched forward. In a few steps, he was at the edge of the our small corridor.

I could hear the sound of distant footsteps and whispers as they grew closer.

Mei popped his head around the corner. When it was all clear, he signaled for me to follow him.

I caught up with him when he suddenly bolted in a dead sprint. I had no idea what was going on, so I had no choice but to chase after him.

When I finally did reach him, he was in the arms of his girlfriend. Looking further behind them, I recognized each of the faces of the Rebels and the new members.

Mei's girlfriend began to speak.

"There are others down here like us. This is now considered a sanctuary for Rebels. The Known Families have been sending Guardians and Supporters all over the place. As far as we know, they haven't found any entrances to the underground yet.

"They know we're hiding somewhere and it won't be long until they find us. The demons already have, so it's just a matter of time until they do, too. We need to gather all of the Rebels and make our move soon."

Mei grasped her hand said, "Alright, let's move."

I walked at the end of the group and constantly checked over my shoulder for any Nephilim or demons.

Our group was slightly larger than how Mei and I had left it. The Rebels must have found other Neph down here who were looking to band with us. There must be more down here who we need to find.

"Trev said it should be around here somewhere," Mei mumbled to himself.

"Ah, yes!" He cheered.

I couldn't see anything from where I was standing at the back of the group, so I made my way to the front.

We were standing around a huge, metal door that looked so out of place in this dump. Mei's girlfriend placed here hand flat against the door. A click sounded throughout the corridor as she unlocked the door.

Mei wrapped his arm around her shoulder and they walked through the door together. I entered next, followed by the rest of the Rebels.

It was surprising to see the room completely made of the same metal as the door. It was a decent size that would comfortably fit each of us. Metal bunk beds were attached the the walls and each had a slim mattress with a pillow.

Ry opened a closest door and dragged out blankets. Her pink eyes sparkled as she handed them out.

"This will be the place we will stay while we gather more Nephilim. I suggest not leaving at all due to the recent demon activity down here. However, search parties will go out. The first group will be Ry, Dex, Gren, and Declan. You guys will walk around for two hours and then come back with any newcomers. Then the next group will be sent out. Got it?" Mei asked.

A chorus of "yes" fell flat against the metal walls.

Ry bounced around while getting ready to head out. Someone was excited. Dex was a huge, muscular guy with a small head. His dark green eyes were squinty and you could barely see them when he smiled, which he was doing right now. Gren was just a couple inches taller than Ry, but she was sturdier. Her long reddish hair was tied in a braid down her back. She had hazel eyes and freckles dotting her face.

When we were all ready, we let Mei know we were leaving and walked out the door.

Ry, still bouncing, talked about everything and nothing at the same time. It made me smile. Gren just rolled her eyes the whole time.

The only sound was our footsteps on the cracked concrete floor. I turned to the group and said, "There's something I need to do. Go on ahead of me and I'll meet back up with you guys later."

Ry opened her mouth to protest, but with one look at my expression she closed it and nodded her head weakly.

All three of them gave me curious stares, but I just shrugged them off.

"Don't worry about me, I'll be back," I said. Then I swiftly turned around and walked away.

Kiera

He was back again, leaning casually against the wall as if he was enjoying this. His blue tipped spiked hair the same as it had been the day before. His smirk stayed firmly in place as well.

The only difference was this time, he brought a Supporter with him.

She looked a little older than the two of us considering the fact that I thought Blue Hair was close to my age.

The Supporter had bright yellow hair and eyes the same shade of yellow. Jeez what was up with them dying their hair the same color as their eyes?

Blue Hair stepped off the wall and moved to stand in front of me. He bent down and asked, "Ready to talk today?"

I smirked and shook my head. That earned me a solid punch to the jaw. My head flew to the side and cracked against the concrete wall.

I still refused to show any signs of pain. He obviously had the upper hand here, so I didn't want to boost his ego any further.

"Jean," Blue Hair said as he turned around to look at her, "You know what to do."

He turned back around and winked at me. I glared back.

Jean came forward to take Blue Hair's spot.

She gazed into my eyes and it felt like fingers were tickling around in my brain. Mei didn't teach me how to block this!

I kept throwing up walls that were destroyed each time. I couldn't stop her.

Jean frowned.

"She really doesn't know where the Rebels are."

Duh, they did capture me before I got to find out where the safe house was. The only one I knew about was the abandoned building that they had already ambushed.

"But," I could feel her prying further into my mind. I had to stop her.

I don't really know what I did next, but I sort of visualized snipping the things that were furrowing through my head. The next thing I knew, Jean screamed, collapsing on the floor.

She squeezed her head between her hands where the top of her head was smoking, then remained still.

Blue Hair looked shocked for a second before accusing, "What did you just do!"

"Hell if I know." I said.

"You will pay for this," he said and scooped Jean off the floor.

He slammed the door shut and I jumped.

I have no idea what I just did. I almost don't want to know. It looked like I had fried her brain or something from the smoke coming off her head.

Later that night while I had fallen asleep, Blue Hair had came back.

When I opened my eyes he said, "Jean can't read minds anymore. What the hell did you do to her? What is your power?"

"Yeah, I don't even know what I did. My power isn't all that special so I won't share it with you. You'll just make fun of it."

I must have been too "smart" with him or something. He propelled himself off the wall he had been perched on faster than I could see.

He gripped my shirt, holding me and the chair I was stuck to, three feet off the ground.

"Tell me what your power is right now," he growled, grinding his teeth.

"Okay, okay. Jeez. My power is to see what my opponent will do before they do it. I get these quick images in my mind a split second before they do it so I know how to avoid it. I haven't been using it much now because it's kinda useless," I blabbed.

He dropped the chair on the ground. It landed unsteadily and tipped over to the floor.

I fell sideways in the chair and my cheek smacked against the floor as the chair shattered. The Onyx binding my wrists to the chair broke, too, so I raised my arms to my mouth and yanked off the cloth with the power dampening chemical.

Blue Hair had turned his back on me when he dropped me and didn't see me coming. He didn't know I was out of the chair.

I ran at his back. I couldn't use my power because of that damn cloth that had been on me for...I lost count of how many days I was here.

I hooked my arm around his neck and pulled him down backwards. He clawed at my arm, his electric blue eyes bulging out in surprise.

I squeezed harder. His face turned bright red.

Blue Hair jerked forward and I lost my hold around his neck. He slipped free and I fell on my ass.

Blue Hair took in huge gulps of air. I jumped off the ground to attack him again before he could regain his strength.

I launched myself at him. He snatched me out of the air with his hands around my waist. He slammed me to the ground and wrapped one hand up in my hair. He had one knee on my chest to make sure I couldn't get up. He was crushing my freaking rib cage. I couldn't breathe.

He yanked my head down which brought tears to my eyes. He leaned down right in my face and spat, "I am going to make you wish you were dead."

He got off of me and I could breathe again. He plucked me off the ground and threw me over his shoulder.

The door exploded open. I looked up and met the eyes of a seriously pissed off Declan.

Blue Hair froze then slid me off his shoulder. His eyes were huge as he threw me behind his back.

With the door open, I could see out into the hall. Guardians littered the hallway. I couldn't tell if they were dead.

Holy crap. Declan was a beast.

Declan reached over his shoulder and drew a long sword. He grabbed the handle and with his other hand, he slid it along the blade.

His sword came to life in blue flames.

Blue Hair slammed his hand on a red button on the wall I hadn't seen before.

Red lights flashed a warning. We had to get out of here quick.

Blue Hair formed a silver ball in his hand then lobbed it at Declan. He raised his hand and disintegrated the orb.

Blue Hair kept lobbing the silver balls at Declan. It was useless. Declan was no match for him.

Declan plunged his sword with the blue flames deep into his stomach. I could see the tip of the sword poke through his back from where I was standing.

Declan yanked the sword back out and Blue Hair fell to the floor where he stayed.

Declan retracted the flames from his sword and put in back on the sheath on his back. He scooped me off the ground and ran out of the room.

The sounds of pursuit echoed through the hall as we ran for freedom.
