Chapter 18: Chapter 18

The Moment to FightWords: 8945

Kiera

The plan was to head out during the night so as to not be easily visible. We would all be wearing black as we marched to the Known Family's front yard. Once we got there, we would camp out in the trees surrounding the yard.

The Known Family always likes to overdo things. Hence why they would have a million huge trees framing the yard. Like why they couldn't just use a fence like normal Neph was beyond me. Whatever, now t gave us a place to hide until the daytime.

We wanted to be seen for when we stood up against the Known Family. We knew that with half the members of the Rebels most likely dead, that we wouldn't stand a chance of attacking again. We were far too few in number and it hadn't ended good last time.

We would be using no violence, only if the situation got too out of control which was the most probable thing to happen.

I lounged around all day with Trev and Declan. I was getting antsy about the operation and couldn't sit still much longer. I was sitting next to Declan on one side of me and Trev on the other. I didn't expect Trev to actually stay with us the whole day. He knew the Rebels much more than we knew us.

When my legs started bouncing subconsciously while I was sitting, Declan placed his hand on my knee to stop it from moving. I hadn't realized I had been doing that.

Trev snorted and I couldn't help but laugh at that.

Night approached and it was time to leave.

"We can do this. All of you are strong and brave. Go out there and give it your all like you always do. Ready?" Trev asked them trusted his hand out toward the center of the circle we had formed around him.

"Yes!" We all shouted in unison and placed our hands on top of his.

"Let's go!" Trev yelled and we threw our hands in the air.

In a single file line, we exited the building. No one looked jittery or even remotely nervous. They must have really wanted to do this. They looked like true soldiers. Displaying the qualities of true Guardians and Supports, it wasn't fair that they never got the chance to become one.

The Known Family's house was on the outskirts of the White Sector and wouldn't take long to get to.

The Rebels split up in small groups so it wouldn't be easy to spot us. Some groups were ahead, some behind, and some to the sides.

I was with Trev, Declan, and some other Rebels I never spoke with. Mei, his girlfriend, and Ry were in the group directly behind us.

It took us maybe two or three hours to reach our designation because of the enormity of the White Sector.

We stood far from the trees surrounding the yard just in case there were traps or security cameras.

"Mei," Trev whispered and motion with his hand to come forward.

Mei's golden eyes grew brighter and he stood still. When they faded back to normal, he said, "There are security cameras and a few traps distances between the trees."

At that he nodded to his girlfriend and she concentrated at the trees for a couple minutes.

"All set. I disabled all the cameras and traps. It should be safe to head up in the trees," she said.

Wow. There were so many powers Nephilim could do that I didn't know about. So cool.

All of the Rebels climbed in the trees and we slept in them for the night. When the sun came up, we would begin our rebellion.

Declan

The sun came up the next morning brighter than ever. I guess that was a good sign. Unless it was a sick way of saying that we would all be dead soon.

The Rebels slowly climbed out of the trees and walked across the expansive yard.

A massive garden took up one side of the yard and a large fountain took up the other side.

Trev led us to the water fountain and hopped up on the ledge so he could see all of us. We surrounded the fountain and looked up at him.

Mei was holding a camcorder and filmed Trev. Trev had told us that this live feed would be broadcasted throughout all of the Sectors on the huge screens that were in the streets.

"Attention everyone. My name is Trev and you guys have all been kept in the dark about what has really been-"

A spear engulfed in a green coating embedded itself right through Trev's chest. He collapsed backwards and splashed in the fountain.

"No!" Kiera yelled as she reached for him.

That was when dozens of trained Guardians and Supporters stepped out from the trees and took aim.

Kiera jumped up on the fountain where Trev had just been standing. The Guardians and Supporters used their powers to let hundreds of weapons fly towards us.

The Rebels used their powers to try to stop the oncoming attacks, but it was no use.

Standing on the fountain, Kiera raised her hand. Her face was a mask of determination.

All of a sudden, the weapons from the Guardians and Supporters froze. The Guardians and Supporters were shocked.

Kiera started to tremble under the weight of freezing all their attacks. I jumped up next to her on the fountain and grasped her hand in mine. Then I raised my other hand, too.

She stopped trembling when we shared the burden of holding all the weapons between the two of us.

She shot me a grateful look with tears in her eyes and shouted, "Stop!"

Then she narrowed her eyes and rotated all of the weapons in the air so they were faced towards the Guardians and Supporters.

They stood stock still.

Mei, still holding the camcorder, zoomed up in my face and Kiera's face. The Guardians and Supporters became even more still when they recognized who I was.

I knew Kiera and I wouldn't be able to hold the weapons in the air much longer, so I easily disintegrated every single one. The ashes fell to the ground.

"There is something you all need to know," Kiera began, staring right into the camcorder.

"The Known Families may seem like the perfect rulers. They may seem as though they are running the Sectors fairly and to the best of everyone's interests.

"Well, that is not what is happening at all. My name is Kiera, and who you all just saw get killed was my best friend, Trev.

"When he was young, he didn't have a power or wings. The Known Family exiled him to the Gray Sector where he later on acquired his power and wings. The same thing happened to me and each and every one of us," she continued as Mei zoomed in on each of the Rebels.

"For not having a power by a certain age, Nephilim are banished. It's not fair. They were probably banished because the Known Families believed they would never have a power and were therefore useless.

"I grew up actually believing I was a human. When I came here for The Trials, I was ridiculed for being a 'weak' human.

"That brings up another issue. The segregation of humans from the Sectors. The humans have to live under barely tolerable conditions. I had to fight for what I needed. I slept in whatever building didn't look about to collapse. Gangs threatened my life during the night. Street brawls threatened my life during the day.

"You all think you have it so hard having to fight demons. The humans have it just as hard with the conditions the Known Families have forced them under.

"Something needs to be done about the banishment of Nephilim who don't have powers and the powerless humans.

"No one should be ostracized for not having a power. What the Known Families has done and has continued to do, is unforgivable."

I took over from there.

"I am Declan, son of the First Descendant of the White Sector. I grew up like all of you trusting and blindly believing that the Known Families have had everyone's interests in the palm of their hands. When Kiera and Trev shared their stories with me, I realized something was truly wrong.

"My own parents have deceived me. Now is the time to do something about it and to fight for what we deserve."

After my speech, Mei shut the camcorder off and all of the Rebels turned around to face the Guardians and Supporters.

Their expressions ranged from awe, surprise, anger, and a few unidentifiable emotions.

I slipped into the fountain where Trev was floating on his back.

His short brown hair was floating around his head and his sightless violet eyes stared up at nothing and everything at the same time.

I knelt in the water beside him and placed his head in my lap.

As I stared into his eyes, the color I knew so well faded to white and then clear.

I swept my hand over his eyelids to shut his eyes. I bent my head over his lifeless formed and let one tear fall.

It landed in the water near where the spear protruded from his chest.

I didn't notice the blood that stained the water before. There was so much blood. And it was all coming from Trev.

From right there, I swore my revenge on the Known Families.

From killing Trev, to banishing all of us to the Gray Sector, for making me believe I was human, to making me grow up without a family, to leaving the humans to live like animals, and for finally brain washing everyone with all their lies, I knew I could not let them get away with this.

By the looks on all the Rebels' faces, they were thinking the same thing as me.

No, this was not the end.

It was just the beginning.
