Despite the NightGuard armor, even through blurred vision, he knew the face so resembling his own. Staring down at him so intently.
âBast.â He sighed. Letting his head fall back against the wall in relief.
âHello brother.â
Alazar wouldâve never suspected heâd be so grateful to be staring up into the face of his twin. âHowâd you know?â Alazareth murmured with the last vestiges of his strength.
âClose enough to hear your soul screaming.â He walked over and lifted his brother effortlessly into his arms, like a small child. Tossing only a cursory glance at the naked woman on the bed still panting for air. âThough this, youâll have to explain. Iâm dying to knowâ¦â
âGod Forbid!â Alazar swore. âJust get me out of here.â
I am never telling you I was about to become her whore.
An unwilling mate. Bast would enjoy that far too much. Alazar already envisioned his brotherâs cocky grin and deep amusement. Iâm never telling himâ¦
âYouâre welcome, by-the-byâ¦For flying to your aid in the middle of trying to seduce my valkyrie.â He grumbled.
That probably was an inconvenience. Alazar did feel a brief pang of conscience. By now sheâs likely booby trapped her chamber.
âBloody Hell.â Alazar murmured. Head lolling as Bast took the stairs two at a time. âI probably saved your life then.â
âWell,â Bast gave him a dirty look. âI donât thank you.â
âNo.â Alazareth murmured. âYou never would.â But despite his grumblings heâd never been more thankful to see his brother.
âWhere is your woman?â Bast asked.
Hiding somewhere. Crying. Broken.
Because of meâ¦
âI doubt sheâll ever be mine.â
Bast reached the bottom of the stairs as four guards shoved open the door to the foyer. Bast lifted a hand and brought them to a dead stop. Their eyes glazing, they looked at each other in confusion. Bast walked wide around them and exited the door. Walking around the corner wall until they were out of sight.
He lowered Alazareth and let the disguise of his armor fall away. Tugging his gray cloak from over his shoulders to drape around Alazarethâs. Pulling it closed over his twinâs burned chest. âYouâre beginning to shiver. What was that?â
âRadixâs magic.â
Bast tilted his head, lip curling in disdain. âHe had you submitting to that woman? Why? What does he gain from that?â
Everything.
I lose everythingâ¦
âRiaura saw it.â
Bast drew in a long breath from between his teeth. âThat sounds like one of his games.â
âThey both knew itâd crush her.â
âAnd you?â
âMe as well.â He admitted. Eyes fighting to stay open, he blinked heavily.
âI imagine you were the target, My Brother.â Bast commented as he lifted Alazareth again. Noticing the other man had already collapsed from exhaustion. âA little time at WaterRose and youâll be healed and ready to kill whoever did this to you.â
âMarod.â He murmured before going unconscious just as Bast tossed him over his shoulder.
Sebastian hadnât lied. In two daysâ, time Alazareth was snapping waspishly at his brother once more.
Taking out on him my grief for what Iâm losing.
Riaura will never forgive what she thinks she saw.
âIâm fine. Stop fussing over me.â He swatted away the wood mug of broth, Bast tried to hand him. Nearly sloshing it on the floor.
âYouâre an oversized infant!â
âI cannot stay laying here forever.â He hollered at his twin stalking from the room. âWhy donât you send your lovely valkyrie in here to tend me.â
He taunted. Knowing it was the only thing guaranteed to get a rise out of his brother. Bast stepped back inside and with a snarl, tossed the steaming liquid over the coverlet.
Making Alazareth hiss in pain.
Bast smirked over bared teeth and turned to leave the room but met the scathing look of the woman herself. âElsabet?â
âIs that how you tend the sick?â
âItâs how I tend my brother.â He retorted as they went down the hall with her loudly reprimanding him.
Good.
When Bast returned later he was set on not letting Alazareth bait him.
âI told you. I wonât remain lying her forever. It is killing me to do nothing.â
Bast calmly stood over him. âMy Bird is right. Itâs not laying there that is killing you. Itâs wondering how she fares.â
Riaura.
Alazarethâs eyes roved the coverlet. âHave you seen her?â
Bast groaned. âOf course, I checked on your woman, Brother. Need you even ask?â
âOnly checked on?â
Bast groaned and stared at the ceiling above him like an impatient teenager. âYes, only.â
âHow is she?â
âBeautiful. Sad.â Bast sighed. âSheâs okay. For now.â
Perhaps on the outside. Sheâs never okay inwardly. He worried for her.
âI have to get back to her.â
âYou canât watch over the girl every day, Brother. You have to give her a chance to growâ¦Unless that is what you fear.â
I only fear growing apart.
Alazarethâs eyes narrowed on his long-haired twin. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI saw that fiancé of hers arriving at the castle. Wonât he, at least keep her safe?â
Alazar gave him a chastising look. Not in the least.
âFair enough. Get out of bed then.â Bast uttered in disgust.
Alazar tossed back the coverlet and saw his chest was taped. âDid you do this?â
âNo. I wouldnât touch you while you were covered in sweat.â Bast looked appalled. âMy valkyrie did that while I was out.â
âYou left me alone with her?â Alazarâs voice rose. Teasing note absent now in his horror.
âShe didnât eat you.â Bast gestured. âShe tended you. You should be thankful.â
âTo be alive?â
Bast gave a grudging head tilt.
Not reassuring.
âShe probably licked the blood off. How do you know she didnât fill me with venom?â
âYou wouldnât still be alive.â He said boredly. âBesides, what reason would she have?â
âDoes she require one?â Alazar countered.
âTouché.â
