Mardichi roared with laughter.
Serdephe hiccupped, looking from the red barbarian back to Tev and putting her hand to her mouth as though she confided. Though the words were nearly shouted. âHeâs so huge.â
Mardichi only laughed harder.
Donât say whatever foul thing is in your barbarian head.
Tev frowned. âYes, but unfortunately, like most large men he is all aggression and no brain.â Tev tapped his skull pointedly.
Noticing for the first time, that his other hand was already tangled in her violet hair and stroking her scalp methodically. Making her blink sleepily. When did that happen?
Mardichi laughed.
âYou are beautiful.â She pointed to Bast, but her finger swayed so much she had to close one eye to see if it was aligned with the correct man. âAnd you, youâre huge.â She pointed to Mardichi.
His chest puffed in pride. âWomen oft tell me thaâ.â
âThey do not.â Bast contributed. Taking another drink. âHe lies.â
Mardichi gave Bast a rough elbow which caused him to gasp in pain. Clutching his side as he panted for air.
Both Mardichi and Tevâs look suddenly turned severe as they realized, despite all of Bastâs bravado, he hadnât touched his second drink.
Unlike him. Very unlike him!
âYouâre looking a smidge pekid.â Tev murmured. âBast are you okay?â
âNo.â Bast admitted, face falling to the table. âI heard him.â
Him, who?
It canât beâ¦
âWho?â Tev asked.
âNo.â Mardichi said in shock.
âRaese.â He confirmed what they were both thinking. âBut I couldnât pinpoint him.â
Why not?
âHow could you not?â Mardichi barked.
âHe thought of me. One time. I heard him once and trailed it to the Paladines but couldnât find him.â
He lost the trail. Teverius realized.
âThe Paladines?â Tev asked slowly. âNone of us looked there.â
âI have.â Bast said. âBut I couldnât find him.â He was clearly despondent.
âIâll find him.â Tev vowed. âBast, I will find him.â Tev reached across the table to catch Bastâs bicep. Gripping it tightly. âI can redeem myself for the crimes I did.â
âCrimes?â Serdephe asked blinking. âWhat have you done?â
âNot yet, Sweetheart.â Teverius said dismissively. Promising himself heâd tell her how he failed to protect the Watchers, if he could find Raese.
âYouâre hurt Brother.â Mardichi murmured thoughtfully. Noticing how Bast propped one shoulder against the edge of the bench as the night progressed. âWe didna know.â
âIâm fine.â
âYou donât look it.â Tev agreed with Mardichi, for once.
âI almost died getting back to WaterRose.â
What the devil!
âWhat?â Tev demanded.
âI nearly froze to death.â
âWhat happened?â Serdephe was breathless. Staring at Bast with that glazed look again.
But Tev was consoled by the fact that it was his chest she now cuddled against.
âElsabetâ¦â
âThe valkyrie wench?â Mardichi jerked backward in shock.
âShe saved you?â Tevâs brow furrowed. âMayhap weâve all been wrong about her.â
âYou have.â Bast said certainly. âI certainly was.â
âWell Methanks to her then.â Mardichi murmured under his breath. Sheâll hear it from me own mouth when next I see her.
âIf sheâll talk to anyone after this.â
âIf?â
âIâve locked her back in, even though she didnât leave me when she had the chance.â
âIf she were loose, she could kill many a man.â Mardichi acknowledged.
âShe couldâve gone while I was bedridden.â
âYou were bedridden!â Tev was stunned. Having never seen Bast weak enough to not get right back on his feet.
