Chapter 23: Submit...

Alpha

That one word rung in my ears as the pack bowed in front of me. The few wolves from the Shadows pack trotted towards me and kneeling down said, Luna allow us to accompany you on your run.

Not knowing the protocol for such a request I turned to Jayden for help and I saw his face showed a similar expression of shock as mine but also one of pride. I saw his eyes roaming my body and he too saw the changes in height and stance of my wolf.

Alpha Neal walked over to me and since he was still in his wolf form he spoke through the link.

Do not be nervous Layla. I don't know why or how we are noticing this about you now but you, my daughter, have the Alpha gene.

What?

Alpha Neal walked closer to me and ran his muzzle on the back of my neck. Giving what I could best describe it as a "wolf hug".

I always sensed something different about you when I first found you and when we made you a member of the pack something changed inside you. I never really thought about it much. These past few days I thought you being a Shifter was what I was sensing all along but now I know it was your Alpha blood. Layla you are my next in line.

I looked at Alpha Neal and said, How is this even possible? I didn't posses the Alpha gene before. Why now?

You're guess is as best as mine. But I think when you mated, accepted your abilities, and broke your bond to Romero something that was concealed all these years was let out. Which is why the feeling I had when I first met you was so faint and blocked. You always had Alpha blood in your veins. You are the rightful future Alpha of the White Thorn pack. Since there is no one willing to challenge you, do you accept?

Alpha Neal asked me and I saw the tension and anticipation build in the pack. Alpha Neal was the only wolf who possessed the Alpha gene and after him no one was born with it. Seeing as now I had Alpha blood it made sense I would take the title when the time came. My training would commence and I would be taught to perform the role of Alpha.

I, Layla, of the White Thorn Pack accept─

"Wait! I challenge Layla to a fight for the title of Alpha!" I turned my head being interrupted mid-sentence and I could feel the anger inside me for being challenged. My entire being was urging me to kill the wolf who wanted my title. I pushed these controlling and vindictive thoughts down and turned to the voice.

Kegan walked out of the crowd and I saw Ryan lingering back behind him.

"I, Kegan, son of Alpha Neal challenge you, Layla, to a fight for the Alpha title of the White Thorn pack." He said in a solid and unwavering voice. He wore a pair of shorts and that was it. His chest was bare and his fist were clenched.

Many of the pack wolves shifted and pulled on their clothes to form a circle around us. The Shadows wolves stood behind me and Jayden walked to stand beside me, no wearing a pair of low slung sweat pants and nothing else. I remained in my wolf form and I felt Alpha Neal walk to Kegan now in his human form.

"Kegan. You are making a huge mistake. Unless you have forgotten the White Thorn pack is a descendant of Shifters. Layla is the rightful Alpha to be. I won't apologise for the false hope you had of becoming Alpha but you were only a suggestion. Take your challenge back."

He smiled and giving Alpha Neal a cold look he said, "I don't care if I'm not Alpha but I will not stand by and watch her be named Alpha. And if you say she really is the rightful Alpha, she should have no problem facing me in a fight."

"She has not been trained like you! I will forbid it. I am still the Alpha and no fight will take place tonight!" Alpha Neal yelled. His voiced boomed in the trees and I saw the pack stumble back from the power in his tone. I retreated behind the crowd and shifted, pulling my dress over my head.

"Father even you cannot stop this. A challenge for the Alpha title can only be declined by the person being challenged. Only a weak, pathetic, disloyal, and unworthy Alpha declines a challenge." Kegan's eyes were on me the entire time and I felt the anger boil inside me. My entire being and surrounding were blurring and all I could think was how Kegan had to be silenced.

"I accept!"

I felt the words leave my mouth and Kegan's face showed slight shock but he quickly covered it with a taunting smirk.

"Let's get started then."

He walked back and gestured me forward.

Angel what are you think?

I don't know. But I have to do this.

No you don't! I won't just stand and watch him hurt you!

You have to! I will not allow anyone to interrupt this fight. Leave if you can't watch!

I felt Jayden's irritation through our link and I saw his eyebrows were pulled together.

Fine! But remember you are smaller than him in human form so you have speed as an advantage but as a wolf he is much stronger than you. Don't give him the chance the shift but is he does aim for his legs not his throat. Wreck him, Angel.

"You will start in human form and you cannot attack the other if he/she is still in human form. The first one to submit loses." Alpha Neal said.

"Anytime now Layla." Kegan taunted me with his fists up. He was bouncing on his feet and I looked around to see the pack watching me. Kate, the twins, Iris, Damon, and Alpha Cairstay all stood with worried looks on their faces.

I stepped into the makeshift "ring" and nodded to Alpha Neal. He pulled his eyebrows together and I saw his reluctance and conflicted thoughts on his face. I looked at Kegan and copying him I staggered my feet and raised my first. We were a few feet from each other and I saw his eyes scanning me.

"Begin!" Alpha Neal said and stepped out of our way.

This is going to be fun. Kegan said through the pack link and without a second to hesitate his fist collided with my face. My hands went up to my nose and I saw blood on my hands. His leg connected with my side and I fell on my hands. I heard Jayden's growl rip through the clearing. Kegan looked up and taking the chance I pushed off my legs and knocked his legs out from underneath him.

He bounced back up and I saw the angry look on his face. He growled and changed at me. Using Jayden's advice I dodged him and stepped out of his path. I ducked and moved away from his flying fists and I could feel my senses come alive. I followed his every movement and countered it with a block. I stepped in trying to land a punch to his gut but he grabbed my arm and twisted it back. He stepped behind me and pushed my body down into the ground he wrenched my arm back and I felt my shoulder dislocate.

I yelled out in pain and bit my lip. I tasted blood as the tear ran down my face into the soil beneath me.

"I warned you. I tried to help you but you didn't listen. You are weak and a disgrace to this pack." He sneered in my ear.

I struggled against his hold and hooked my other hand around his ankle. My nails grew to claws and I dung them into his ankle. He let go of me but as I got up I heard clothes ripping. Kegan shifted into his wolf and his lips were pulled back from his teeth. I stepped back and following him I too shifted. I stood in my light brown wolf and I watched him size me up. My arm was sore but it had popped back into place when I shifted.

He growled and lunged towards me. He was more experienced in fighting as wolves so before I could register his next move his teeth clamped down on my neck. He bit into the flesh and ground his teeth. I howled in pain and I heard him in my mind.

SUMBIT!

My vision was blurry and I could see the night sky above me. The pack was going in and out of sight. Damon and Andrew held Jayden back as I heard his muffled voice in my ears. I tried to get a hold of Kegan but he didn't give me any opening to attack him. My legs were weak and I felt myself falling.

No! Angel! Keep fighting! Aim for his legs!

I heard Jayden's voice in my head and I looked to see him watching me. He had tears in his eyes and Damon and Andrew still held him in place.

I need you! Don't give up!

I blinked and I felt my body going lax but I used it to my advantage because Kegan's hold on me was loosening as well. When I felt him let go I sprung back up ignoring the excruciating pain in my neck and bit down into his side. Ripped out chunk after chunk of fur and skin. I was running on adrenaline and I felt my animal side taking over. Kegan fell back on his side but he tried to clamp down on my hind leg. Feeling irritated with a measly wolf trying to take my title a loud and angry growl ripped through my chest.

I will not allow you to undermine my abilities any longer! SUBMIT!

I felt the power radiating off me and I could sense the shock and fear in the pack around us.

No!

Kegan struggled against my hold and he clawed at my legs. His claws sunk into my hind legs and I growled, biting down into his shoulder and flinging him across the clearing. He landed against the tree where we had our picnic and I heard his bones crack from the impact.

I stalked up to him. My breathing heavy and deep. Every intake of breath resembled a deadly growl and the blood from my neck had seeped its way around to my throat. Kegan laid in front of me and I could see him struggling to breath. His ribs broke from the fall making it hard to draw air in.

All those time you tortured me. Hurt me! This is only the tip of the ice berg. Submit or I will make you feel so much more pain.

My voice was lethal and every word held a promise of pain.

I saw Kegan flinch and he hung his head low. I relaxed and I stepped back from him. I turned around and I saw the pack watching me with shocked and amazement filled gazes. I stumbled forward leaving Kegan behind but I didn't make it far because my injuries were catching up with me and I felt the adrenaline wearing off. I stumbled forward but I didn't make it far. I collapsed on the ground and the last thing I saw before I blacked out was Jayden's dark brown wolf standing above me.

A/N OHH!! Kegan! Why are you so evil!? LOL
