"What the fuck did you do to my sister?"

The two men now looked at the three girls lying on the floor as soon as Selena was out. Ryan wanted to smile too but he held it in. He glared at Stacy instead and Xavier was already furious.

Stacy could feel the dominant and angry aura in the room and it sent chills down her spine. She stood up somehow as did her friends. She stole a glance at Ryan but then her eyes were stuck on Xavier.

"I... We were n-not... It's not..."

"Stacy," Xavier said calmly, "Leave."

"Xavier I swear..."

"I said leave my room, Stacy," he let Zion make an appearance.

If Stacy was in her wolf form, she would have run out with her tail between her legs.

Ryan smiled but he didn't make a sound, he then turned to look at his alpha. There was a lot they still had to work on.

Xavier sat down on the chair as he looked at his visibly trembling hands. He couldn't believe what he just said to her. How could he have said that? How did he let himself believe that?

He didn't have proof, which was a very weird thing itself, if Stacy found proof so easily, shouldn't there be more evidence against his mate? He didn't find anything. The moment when the reality of what he stuck himself into hit Xavier was the moment Selena seemed to wish he wasn't her mate.

Xavier would much rather spend the rest of his life with his soul mate. He would rather wake up in the arms of his mate and spend a fun day together than stay mate-less and look after a pack. But he was bound by responsibility. Add to this that he loved his job.

"Will things ever get back to normal, Ryan?" he asked his best friend. The alpha had subsided for now.

"I cannot," Ryan paused, what would he say, that he didn't think he had a chance with Selena anymore? He sighed, he'd rather not break his best friend, "I think you have to make a huge amount of effort."

Xavier looked at his friend. Ryan looked at his best friend's eyes. It hurt to see his best friend so broken, but a few things needed to be said, "I think you were stupid. It was very stupid of you to trust Stacy over your own mate. I know what you are gonna say. I saw the evidence. But something didn't feel right from the very first moment. I saw Selena that night, I saw her bruises, she was beaten mercilessly and she was malnourished, she was half dead when she came to us."

Xavier closed his eyes, "I need to make things right. I don't know how but I need to make things right."

"Yeah, you do, boss."

There was no scope for any more conversation as a loud, blood-curling scream cut through them. Xavier recognized the voice instantly within the next second he was out the door with Ryan right behind him.

They half-ran and half jumped down the stairs until they ran out the main door and into the dark of the night. The area had some light and they could already see a lot of the pack members already standing there.

Xavier stood still for only a second as he took in the scene but then he was instantly by the curled up human on the ground. Xavier gently picked her up and sat right there with her close to him.

He linked the chief pack doctor. Dr. Mason Stevens didn't waste any time in reaching the spot. The pack hospital was close to the packhouse and Xavier was never gladder about the way his territory was designed. It almost looked like a small town surrounded by the woods, a little bit away from the main city.

"Shhh..." Xavier whispered as he held on to her gently, "Calm down, baby, the doctor is here, you will be fine. You can do this."

Selena had known it was Xavier before he even spoke. She was too proud to let him hold her, the pain was too bad. Even though his touch was still soothing for her, his voice didn't calm her down. So much had been said already.

She was in so much pain that there was no way she could even find it in herself to speak. She was in pain and she didn't know what was happening. It was a moment of panic for her.

Xavier was holding her in his arms, she was half on the floor and half lying on Xavier, so when the bones in her body shifted painfully slowly, Xavier felt them against his own skin. Selena cried out in pain and moved away from Xavier, not because she didn't want him there, subconsciously she did, but because being held while she was still shifting was making things all the way more painful.

Being an alpha werewolf himself, Xavier knew for a fact that shifts aren't supposed to be that slow even for the wolves shifting for the first time, and definitely not after so many years of shifting,

She screamed once again, louder this time when she felt her body changing itself. Xavier looked up at Mason who didn't say anything.

"Stevens!" Xavier shouted, prompting the doctor to look at him. He seemed to have been studying the speed and position of Selena's bones before he spoke to his alpha. This concerns the alpha's mate, Mason would rather know what was happening before saying anything to Xavier.

"When did she shift the last time, Alpha?" Mason asked as he too now knelt by Selena. He remembered when the girl had first come into the pack, it was suspicious how she was always hanging around with the alpha's family and friends. The announcement of her being the Luna had made a lot more sense.

Selena was still whimpering and wriggling in pain, there was no way she could answer, so Xavier spoke for her, "A month ago."

Xavier saw how Mason frowned and his face fell, "Mason, it isn't anything dangerous, she'll be okay right?"

Mason looked at his alpha with sympathy. He took a moment and felt Selena's heartbeat. "Alpha, when a wolf doesn't shift for a long time, the bones become accustomed to staying the same way. As a result after a minimum time of one week, when they shift again, they experience pain and it increases with every single day after only that. And she has gone one whole month without shifting and she also very recently was out of heat."

"I have never heard of these," Xavier whispered.

"Because Alpha this hasn't happened in a long time, at least not in the packs. It is a slow shift. This only happens as a form of punishment in the prison controlled by the Werewolf Council. It is an extreme form of punishment. For our Luna, the past month also wasn't easy. She has been through a lot of pain, both physically and mentally. I don't know with her condition how far she'll be able to withstand it."

"But... but she's an alpha."

"She is, her heartbeat is stronger than I had expected, so that is a good thing. If her wolf is in sync with her, then she might somehow make it through. However, we don't know how much she was mentally affected by the whole thing. Another thing that concerns me is, as an alpha, she is supposed to be physically stronger, so..."

"Sometimes the mental wounds can be a hundred times worse than the physical wounds, Mason," Ileana whispered as she now stood beside her mate. Ryan stood still, he knew that this was the result of not just the punishment but also all the torment that she went through. Her eyes involuntarily swiped through the room and stopped on Stacy. He had to talk to Xavier about her.

"Provide her with your love and support alpha. Those will make her stronger. All we can do other than that now is to pray to the Moon Goddess and hope for the best right now."

Selena shouted one more time just as another bone rearranged itself in her body. She opened her eyes slightly and saw Xavier staring at her with tears in his eyes. His body felt forward as now he was on his hands and knees a little distance away from Selena.

Xavier opened his mouth to say something but he couldn't. A new voice interrupted him. things had been so chaotic near the packhouse at that moment that all the warriors patrolling the pack borders had come running to see what was happening. None of them knew where this new man came from?

"What the fuck did you do to my sister?!"

Xavier was pushed away from his mate and down the ground but again the next second he was standing again up against a tree with another guy grabbing his collar.

Xavier glared at him, the only thing in his mind right then was his Luna, so how dare this guy, stranger, come out of nowhere and pull him away? But then, the longer he stared at him, the more he realised the similarity in their features.

"You are Connor, her eldest brother," Xavier stated. There was no doubt in his mind, they had the same scent and their eyes were almost the same.

"What did you do to her?" Connor growled just as Roy and Seth pulled him away from their alpha and held him tightly.

"Can I trust you to not attack me?" Xavier asked but he only growled in reply. The alpha didn't know if it was the right decision or not, but he signalled his men to let him go.

Connor had turned to look behind him to see who held him back but his eyes fell on his sister.

Selena gasped and struggled to breathe now. Her pain was increasing devastatingly and her whole body felt like it was on fire, but she still recognized that voice. For months she had been sending him letters now and this is the moment when he turns up?

The pain became too consuming then as Selena started losing consciousness.

"No Selena. Don't close your eyes. Please, Luna, come on!" Ryan's voice rang as the beta stared at her intently.

Even though the pain was now more than she could even imagine, she could feel the fur growing on her skin. It has been days since she saw her brownish-red fur.

"Mason, what is happening?!" Ryan screamed from beside her.

"Her wolf is trying to complete it faster. It will increase the pain momentarily but it will be over sooner. That is good." Mason nodded.

"How much longer, doctor?"

"Hopefully, just a few more minutes, beta."

Ryan sighed. "Come on, Selena. You can do this."

A minute and a half later, Selena turned into her wolf, but she was too tired to get up. So was Izzy. She lied so still, that the only sign of life in her was her chest moving

"Luna, I need you to change back so we can take you to the hospital. I assure you, this time, it won't hurt at all," Dr. Stevens said standing beside her with a large piece of clothing. This time, Selena changed back, there really was no pain apart from the dull throb that was due to the last shift. She was so tired, that she couldn't stay awake while they wheeled her into the pack hospital.

"You have got a lot of explaining to do," Connor gritted out.

Xavier sighed and nodded. There was no escaping this situation. He brought it upon himself. He started towards his office and Connor followed.
