Jun stared at Po, blocking the door. Po stood frozen, his mind racing with questions. Where had he slipped up? How had Thameâs plan failed? Before Po could process further, Jun pulled out his phone and called Thame.
âIâve figured it out, you know. I know whoâs helping you,â Jun said smugly.
âDid you really think that fake interview clip would fool me? Iâve worked here long enough to know that every interview has a consistent length.
Mine was two and a half minutes. Yours? Barely a minute.â
Poâs stomach dropped. Jun had spotted something he hadnât even considered. The discrepancy in video lengths was glaring. Jun wasnât analyzing the content of Thameâs clip - just the timestamps.
âThat means your little interview wasnât finished, but you two mustâve had plenty to talk about off-camera.â
Po couldnât hear Thameâs reply, but Jun laughed mockingly.
âOh, and one more thing. The file sequence,â Jun added, referring to the file numbers. âTwo files are missing, meaning there were extra interviews, but they were deleted or moved off the camera.â
Jun had unraveled everything. Thame had anticipated Junâs moves, but not entirely. Jun was sharper than either of them had expected.
âYouâre coming here?â Jun continued, his tone dripping with mockery.
âToo bad youâve been banned from the building. Guess you wonât make it in time.â He paused, smirking. âOh, and just imagine how much Pemika will love me for catching the culprit. Iâll make sure she knows Iâm the one who kept everything in line and got you on that plane to Korea.â
He ended the call with a drawn-out, âBaaaaiii,â then turned his attention to Po, his smug smile unwavering.
âWait, Jun,â Po interjected. âThis isnât what you think.â
âIsnât it?â Jun replied, crossing his arms.
âYouâre the last person who spoke to Thame before he changed his mind. If it wasnât you, who else could it have been? Mick? No way. Ming or Tae? Never disobey orders. Youâre the wildcard here, and this mess started the moment you showed up.â
Po struggled to form an excuse, finally blurting out the truth. âJun, listen.
Thame doesnât want to go to Korea.â
âThis isnât about what he wants. Itâs about what he has to do!â Jun snapped, his voice laced with frustration.
âWhy? So you can become an actor? From what Iâve heard, youâre not even the lead in the movie. Wouldnât continuing Mars be better for you? Itâd give you more exposure, and...â
âYou donât understand anything!â Jun cut him off. âThis has nothing to do with me being an actor. Itâs about Thame. If he doesnât go, this band will destroy him.â
Po froze.
Destroy him?
âWhat do you mean?â Po asked hesitantly.
Junâs voice dropped, heavy with emotion. âDid Thame ever tell you about the contracts he signed for this band? Did he ever tell you what would happen if he didnât go to Korea?â
Po shook his head. Thame had never mentioned anything.
âOf course he didnât,â Jun scoffed. âHe didnât even tell us. Not one of his bandmates knew back then. None of us questioned why he agreed to debut solo. But I did. I checked his contract. Thame signed away everything.
Every penny he earned went into keeping this band afloat. He carried all of us - four freeloaders who couldnât pull our weight.â
Junâs words were harsh, but Po could see the pain behind them.
âI told him not to do it, but he wouldnât listen. He thought he could shoulder everyoneâs dreams. But look at him now. Heâs exhausted. Thatâs why, when the Korea deal came up and freed him from the old contract, I was relieved. For once, he had a chance to put himself first.â Jun stepped closer to Po. âAnd then you came along. What did you say to him? What made him change his mind? Instead of taking the only way out, heâs back to carrying everyone elseâs weight.â
Junâs frustration was palpable, and Po finally understood why Thame had said Jun was his closest friend. Despite the teasing and the arguments, Junâs anger was rooted in a deep care for Thame.
Po couldnât help but smile slightly, which only angered Jun further.
âWhat are you smiling about? Have you lost your mind?â
âNo,â Po replied, shaking his head. âI just realized how much you love Thame. Thatâs why he said youâre so important to him.â
âWhat?â Jun recoiled, visibly flustered.
âAll of this - your anger, your frustration - itâs because you care about him. You want him to be okay.â
âI donât care about him!â Jun denied vehemently, though his actions said otherwise.
âJust stop interfering. Make him go to Korea. Otherwise, none of us will survive this.â
âBut didnât you say you wanted him to be selfish?â Po countered. âNot going to Korea is the most selfish thing heâs ever done.â
âHow is this selfish? Heâs doing it for others.â
âNo, Jun,â Po said firmly. âHeâs doing it for himself. Thame wants to bring the band back together, not for anyone else, but because itâs what he truly wants. Heâs trying to make up for what he feels he failed to do as a leader. This is his dream.â
Jun hesitated, his expression softening as Poâs words sank in.
âYour friend is being selfish, Jun. Arenât you going to help him? Besides,â Po added with a small smile, âyou love causing trouble anyway.
Going against the company is your kind of game, isnât it?â
Jun didnât respond immediately, his eyes narrowing as he considered Poâs words.
â
The game center was the first place Thame and Junâs bond had truly formed. Neither could remember the first game they played, but they both remembered racing games as their favorite.
Jun was waiting at one of the machines when Thame walked in and sat beside him.
âYou figured it out, huh?â Thame asked as the game loaded.
âDid you really think you were smarter than me?â Jun shot back, grinning.
âYouâve got guts, Iâll give you that.â
âI thought I was being careful.â
âIf you were careful, you wouldnât have brought someone as obvious as Po into this.â
âDonât blame him. If youâre mad, be mad at me.â
âWhy didnât you just go to Korea?â
âBecause I donât want to,â Thame replied bluntly. âAre you going to help me? Are you coming back so we can finish what we started?â
Jun didnât answer immediately. His car in the game swerved dangerously close to crashing.
âEven if I do help you, you know it wonât be easy, right?â he finally said. âPepper might be easy. Nano⦠not too hard. But Dylanâ¦â
âIâve already talked to Pepper,â Thame said.
âNot Nano yet.â
âThen letâs talk to Nano...â
âNo, Jun,â Thame interrupted. âThe first person we need to convince is Dylan.â
Junâs car crashed. He turned to stare at Thame, incredulous. âAre you insane? Dylan first? You do know no one even knows where he is or what heâs doing, right?â
