Vicki and I sat in the room with a small meal spread out between us when Kai and Nick returned. Relief crossed Nickâs face with a small smile as he walked over and wrapped me in a hug. âOh remind me to thank my sister the next time I see her,â he said.
âLieutenant Prat?â I asked.
He nodded and released me. âYou have loyal friends,â he said.
âWhich one came to you guys?â
âThe woman with the big breasts,â Nick said.
âCarly,â I said. A smile crossed my lips, if only she knew what she had just implicated herself in. âThen how did you guys know I would be at the Pit?â
âWe really didnât, thatâs why it took so long,â Vicki said. âWe do apologize.â
I shook my head. âIâm just happy to be out. Otto was running it. Vicki, my accident, is there something I donât know about it? Is there something I could know about it?â
Vicki looked down and sighed. âI always suspected he had something to do with it,â Vicki muttered. âThe way he treated it, he tried to wave away the medics I called for.â
âThen why did you blame yourself?â
âBecause I should have noticed it when I checked your gear,â she said. âHe did it because he knew. He knew about us.â
âWhat, what do you have over him?â I asked.
âNothing you need to worry yourself with,â Kai said. âVicki, we need to move now, the intel is only good for a few days.â
She nodded. âWe donât need Tawny for this right? I mean, we just got her back and we canât ask her to throw the gear on and come with us again.â
Something flashed in Kaiâs face, anger is what I could call it. âUnless you can hack through the doors, yes we need Tawny,â he said.
I could see the tension in Vickiâs face and looked between the two of them. Vickiâs fists clenched and she looked ready to punch Kai. âWhat do you have against her? Is it because sheâs active military?â
âYouâre out of line, Victoria,â Kai said. âIâm in charge of this cell. You know the rules.â
âSheâs not going to be a martyr for you!â Vicki shouted. âI wonât let her.â
It was over before I could process it, Nick caught Vicki as the sound of skin smacking skin filled the air. Her hand went to her cheek as she stared at Kai, anger in her eyes.
âNick, Victoria and I need to have a conversation,â Kai said. âTake Tawny outside.â
Nick appeared reluctant as he released Vicki and offered his hand down to me. âCome on, Tawny, this is only going to get worse if we stay.â
I took his hand and Vicki nodded to me. I walked out of the room with Nick and the door closed behind me. I looked at Nick and he shook his head. âDonât even think about trying to get back in there,â he said.
âWhy is he like this?â I asked.
âKai is putting up with you, but he thinks youâre more work that youâre worth,â he said. âHe really didnât even want to bring you into this, but...well, we needed a hacker and the camp couldnât send one. So, Vicki suggested you and I admit I was skeptical. You were two years out of practice and still active in the military. She didnât tell us that you had bionics or your preferences. Even so, Kai was vehemently against you. I donât know how she managed to track you down, but Kai doesnât trust you.â
âThen why is he taking it out on Vicki?â
âBecause the leadership is forcing him to put up with you. Heâs not happy with it and Vicki is drawing attention to you. He didnât even want to rescue you from the Pit, you barely know anything so he was willing to let you go. You arenât much a risk to the camp, since you really have no idea where it is and we can vanish into thin air if need be. Escape routes already in place for months. But heâs not usually like this, heâs never been violent about it.â
I frowned and looked at my feet. âSo, my being here is why he just hit Vicki?â
âNot exactly,â Nick said. âTheyâve always butted heads, Vickiâs just been able to keep it from you. I donât think heâs ever hit her before. Whatever is happening must be big. I apologize for not telling you what we were doing in subsector fourteen, Kai told me that I couldnât.â
âSo, what Kai says is law?â
âPretty much,â Nick said. âHowever this next one wonât be exceptionally high risk. You wonât be in much danger.â
âNick, Iâm in danger standing in this hallway, itâs a perpetual state for us,â I said. âWhat are we doing?â
He was silent for a moment, looking down at his feet.
âPlease, Nick, I donât want to be in the dark this time,â I said.
He sighed. âItâs a supply run, weâre stealing armor from the maintenance bay you were stationed at,â he said.
