Chapter 2343
After what felt like moving mountains, Mara finally managed to get Balfour to lie down on the
couch. She carefully adjusted his position before cautiously settling into his embrace.
Balfour, half-conscious and pliable, slumped against her shoulder as Mara, beaming sweetly,
snapped a selfie of their seemingly intimate moment.
âIt's such a shame you're out of it,â she whispered as if confiding in a best friend. âIf only you were
awake to see how perfect we are together. But you're all tangled up in that sirenâs spell, unable to
see who you truly want. No worries, though. I'll stick by you until you realize that I'm the one you're
looking for.â
Snap after snap, Mara captured their closeness, gently leaning in toward Balfour.
âDonât hold this against me when you sober up, Balfour! You should've kicked that Ivy to the curb
ages ago. Ever since I returned, I've been on a mission to get her out of the picture. Trust me, I'll
take care of that pesky woman for you. Sleep tight, don't let her haunt your dreams. While you're
pining for her, has she ever spared a thought for you? I'm the one who truly cares!â
Once Balfour was settled on the couch, Mara stood up and checked the photos on her phone. A
satisfied smile spread across her face at the sight of their âsweetâ moments captured in photos.
âThese ought to do the trick. If that woman can't see the writing on the wall now, sheâs got some
nerve. But in time, she'll see these photos and realize she'll never have you.â
Suddenly, the sound of the door clicking open made Mara nearly drop her ph
Her eyes widened in fear as she saw the figure who should've been resting in room-Alyssa.
âA... Alyssa?â Maraâs voice cracked with nerves.
in alarm.
Alyssaâs face was unreadable, even a bit icy, as she approached, causing Mara to back in retreat.
After a cursory glance to ensure Balfour was decent, she turned her
to Mara.
âMiss Lewis, your room is on the ground floor, isn't it? What brings you to Balfour's upstairs study?â
Maraâs smile faltered. That old lady was always on her guard, wasn't she? Mara thought she'd gone
to bed, but she had been lying in wait all along. Thank goodness she hadn't walked in while Mara
was taking pictures.
"Oh, you see, I found a book here earlier and forgot to take it with me,â Mara explained, holding up
the book as if it were a talisman. âI was just reading it here and thought I'd take it back to my room
to continue. I noticed Balfour had fallen asleep. He must be

exhausted. I didn't want him to catch a cold, so I covered him with a blanket.â
Alyssa scrutinized her, then finally nodded.
âBalfour is a married man now, Miss Lewis. Not to be old-fashioned, but it's really not proper for you
to be this close. If you had any self-respect, you wouldn't be in a grown manâs room while he's
sleeping. Since you've got your book, you should go back to your
own room now."
There was a sharp glint in Alyssaâs eye, as if she saw through Maraâs facade.
But Mara wasn't one to back down easily. She argued, knowing Alyssa hadn't discovered her photo
session, âAlyssa, I know you're not fond of me, but I've never been disrespectful or acted
improperly.â
